Tuesday-Lunch, Thursday Dinner, and Stolen Car

Tuesday was the free lunch. There is a couple with whom we always sit. So, it was a pleasant interlude. Lunch was baked spaghetti, bread, cole slaw and a piece of cake or pie and conversation.

Afterward, we took a ride around the lake and observed things that are new. It seems they are always doing something to improve the grounds around the lake. Plus, this is a very pleasant area to be.

In times past I have taken a lunch and have eaten at a picnic table or if it is too cold or too hot, in the car. Actually, for the past few years, I am too chicken to eat at the table as the geese are very aggressive, wanting food and not holding back to get it. Rude!

For his dinner, I boiled potatoes then put them on a pan with raw onion chunks and Johnsonville Maple Breakfast sausages. After I baked this, I turned on the broiler.  He did not want slaw, so that was it. He declared it was delicious. He took home enough of this for three more meals plus the to-go box from church with spaghetti, bread, his slaw and mine.

The poor guy does not have to worry about dinner for four days! Surprisingly, he exclaimed how delicious the onions were. I didn't taste them.

The next day, he said he found in the freezer carrots I baked, so that was added to the potatoes, onions and sausages.

Thursday night was the monthly dinner. We had lasagna, salad with dressing, bread, unsweetened tea, a little pie and ice cream. I did not eat the bread or salad croutons, had seconds of lasagna, brought the little, individual pie home and another to freeze for Tommy.

If you live in this area or Illinois, did you hear about the guy whose car in Cullman was stolen by a trustee prisoner. Well, my friend was the owner of the car. He was telling me all about it when we met in Publix. The guy drove the car to Illinois, I think. It was wrecked and had the radio torn out. Thankfully, my friend owns a truck so he was not stuck with no car. Or, was it St Louis?

He said he will never, ever leave his car unlocked again! I lock my car in the driveaway and anywhere since about 1984. Of course, he left his key in the ignition. I groaned when I heard this. So, he said he would never leave the key in the ignition.

I lay in bed for three days, desperately ill. Finally, last Sunday I felt better and even better on Monday. I have no idea what was wrong as I had no fever and nothing hurt. Do you even feel so rotten, barely able to move, sleep lots and eventually recover without meds?

Do you leave the key in the car? Do you lock your car all the time?

Salt! What is best for you?

See the source image

It seems there are so many people interested in promoting their favorite salt like Himalayan or Sea Salt. They are not aware or do not care about one important aspect of salt.

Ignoring iodine content of salt is rampant. And dangerous. The link will explain all.

I bought Great Value iodized salt, and after several months on the shelf and unopened, the box turned sort of brown near the bottom. An older box of  Morton salt was not stained. I have no idea why the GV box turned brown, I threw it away.

I only buy iodized salt. Do you pay attention to the iodine content of your table or cooking salt?

Another Friend Died

As I called to check on a friend that I am surprised is alive and well, I found out a long-time friend died. She died two years ago. Well, we drifted apart because of my reaction to some thoughtless things she said that I was not willing to deal with.

She was absolutely in love with A. I only knew her for a few months before I gave birth. She could not wait to get her hands on my baby.

She was 72 when she died of cancer, the same age I am now. Also, her sister that I knew died of cancer that she had in the 70s when I knew both of them.

Instances like this remind me of my own mortality. It is a sobering thought. And, it has been on my mind for hours. My cancer can come back elsewhere! She was the same age I am now when she died two years ago. Oh, we drifted apart when she moved away, but had moved back here. Sobering!

Plus, I am still stunned!

My frugal life is plugging along. I rarely mention things that are so common for me now.

cold water in washing machine
very little ALL in the washing machine
use vinegar in the wash
eat leftover
give scraps to chickens
Cook from scratch mostly
Use ads and coupons for purchases
Shop reduced aisle or section of stores
mend items
hang as much as I can to dry, saving wear on clothes
save on electric bill by not using dryer
use cabinets and refrigerator and freezer to cobble together a meal

Okay, I can probably list another hundred items, but I won't.

So, now I have to wait for morning to call someone and learn the details of her illness and death. I should check the obituaries every day! Are you of the age that friends your age are dying? Does it remind you of your own mortality?

Happy Birthday A!

This day, September 27, 1975, I gave birth to my third child and second girl. She came breech! That hurt! Thankfully, she was only 6 lbs. 9 oz. (I think.)

One day, when she was a little over two-years-old, she climbed into the dog house. This was her second time to do this. I had to drag her out, bathe her, wash her hair, and put on clean clothes.  When she was about 18, she told me she did that so I would change her clothes because she did not like what I put on her. Little stinker.

As I was toilet training her, when she peed on the kitchen floor, I would say "uh-oh" very slowly. It was not like the quickly sounded "uh-oh" when something was spilled. She learned to voice this slowly to warn me, which was good when she peed on carpet! The older kids said  "uh-oh", too. when they saw her pee on the floor or saw her clothes getting wet.

One day, we were in a parking lot, the three kids and I. As we drove along to park, she looked out the window and pointed and said, "Uh-oh." We laughed, saying that was really a giant who peed. The puddle in the parking lot could have held more than a dozen cars. It was the kind of wet spot after a rain or shower. She is still a cutie and so funny.

In My Eye

About two weeks ago a gnat or fruit fly was flying about my face. I shooed it away and it came back and dive-bombed my eye, left eye and outer corner.

It was horrendous. Since digging it out that night, my corner of that eye has swollen, ached, and felt like a fine needle was being stabbed into my eye corner. Every time I put my finger, hand or sheet there and caused horrendous pain with the lightest touch, my eyes watered and my nose ran.

Today, I touched the edge of my eye, outside lashes, actually, at lashes. The pain was so excruciating I was not having it anymore. I called all opthamologists in town and all were not in or something. I was told to go to an optometrist. Mine was not in this week ???

So, I went to Marx Optical and they caught the doctor just before he left. I had to read the eye chart, have my eyes numbed, optical pressure taken, blood pressure taken....aaagh. Yes, my blood pressure was elevated. Just look in my eye!

The doctor finally came and looked in my eye. He could see nothing. He was going to hold my lid down with a little stick and turn the lash back over it. Well, the stick located the exact pain place and he never touched my eyelashes because I winced.  My eyes were watering, nose was running. I was sniffing.

Finally, forgot how, he saw it. He said it was an ingrown eyelash.  Knowing the answer, I asked how he was going to get it out. Pull it out. Is that okay. After all the pain he caused me, he asked if it hurt. I think he was surprised it did not hurt at all. My eye, actually inside my upper lid was inflamed. So, I got a prescription of two antibiotics and cortisone.

I absolutely cannot believe I was in such agony for two weeks with excruciating pain and minimized it.

Have you ever let something go trying to just suck it up and deal? I know you have because most of you are women.

For the Pantry

Dawn Fresh 6 oz Steak Sauce

While I was in Publix getting milk today, I checked out the sale racks as I usually do. I was thrilled to find Dawn Fresh Mushroom Steak Sauce. My mother put this in every pot of spaghetti even though there were mushrooms and beef in the spaghetti.

They were 2@$0.79, a very good price. I bought 4 and left the three cans with rust on the rims. I probably will not use these in a year, so the rusty rims were chance-y. They use-by date is in 2020, so still better!

This item is very nostalgic to me.

Have you ever used this product?

A Freebie, First Egg, and a Conversation

First, my freebie. and an announcement--I got my first egg on Thursday. They ate a couple before I found this one buried in dirt.

Friday night, I learned to use the Freeosk at Walmart. The other times I asked someone to show me. Well, each time that person just did it. Actually, once I felt so awful, it was okay. Friday night, I did it all by myself and got a tiny, 0.85 ounce bottle of Johnson's Cottontouch newborn face and body lotion--no parabens, no phthalates or dyes. Since I have no newborns around here, I will use it on myhands and arms. It does not smell like the sweet, pink Johnson's lotion I used on my babies.

Near the electronics section in Walmart, young people from a company trying to sell electronic services set up and waylay people walking by.

Salesperson to me. Hello, who do you get your cable from?
Me: I use an antenna.
Salesperson: You don't get good service, do you?
Me: No.
Salesperson: Are there things you don't get that you would like to get?
Me: Yes.
Salesperson as he knelt by me in the electric cart: Well, I have a service so you can get everything you want. How does that sound?
Me: Not good.
Salesperson: Why?
Me: Because I don't need everything I would like. It would be expensive where my programs are free now.

He finally gave up after a few more exchanges.  There is no way I can justify spending money on cable when I can get a few stations and the news for free. I am quite sure that he had the latest phone in his pocket.

I wondered if he believed what he was suggesting or if it was just a job where he was paid to promote the company's agenda. Tommy spends what I consider to be an exorbitant amount on his cable package, but he can afford it, wants it, and does not work, so he watches more tv. And, god forbid, he does not get every football game!

I digress.

I could just wave off these young salespersons who are not WM employees, give them a short but polite rebuff,  and keep rolling along. But, I just want them to be aware that some people are happy with less than the "best." Plus, I like to hear their sales pitch knowing I can escape at any time.

Since I cannot afford cable, I am willing to do without rather than run amok with bill paying. I admit to a bit of frustration. when I hear Tommy is watching a movie I would like, no,  love, to watch.

Is there anything that you do without? Trips to the end of the earth? Having a personal chef cook for you and a maid to wash the dishes?

A Sudden Need

Shortly after meeting Tommy, he happened to see my stash ( 8 big bottles, I think) of ALL Free and Clear. He never says anything snarky about how much I have or had. He understands I use coupons and sales to lower the price. But, I see the lingering looks. When I laugh and ask him if he thinks I have enough, he does remark but it is all positive.

He has his own stuff in abundance and will never accept anything that I bought that was wrong. For instance, I bought for practically nothing the brand dishwashing liquid my daughter wanted, but not the right formula.

He helped someone move, and they gave him a two-gallon bucket of dry detergent for the washing machine. He had used it for years before I met him. I suspect the bucket is more than two-gallons. He washes one load every two weeks, putting everything in one load. I know; it is crazy.

Well, I am at the bottom of the last bottle of All. The other day I panicked when the bottle of ALL felt light. I have about two inches left in the large bottle. So, it is time to start looking for sales and coupons to replenish the stash. No, I will not store so many bottles like I did before. I use it so slowly because I only use about a tsp in each wash, along with other things. I rinse in vinegar.

I have seen lots of ALL coupons and sales lately, but I am quite sure they will be hard to come by now that I am looking for them!

What do you suddenly realize is diminished in your stash?

Not a Lot to Say

After my dream-riddled sleep, I felt horrible all day Thursday . But, I had things to do, or a thing to do. I went to the MRI and found xrays were scheduled. I was not having any of that, so doctor called in MRI orders. Well, I was still dazed from the horrid night of sleep and dreams, so I went along with it until...

I WAS BEING PUSHEDPULLED INTO THE MRI TUBE.

I am not having any of that either. The woman tech was really nice about it. So, a call to the doctor will maybe give me an open MRI. They are talking sedating me for the MRI. I am not sure of that.

On Thursday, yesterday, I missed going to Farmer's Market. Bummer.

So, today is Friday. I hate getting mail from places that are only sending me mail to notify me I am pre-approved for a loan. Calling these places does not work. So, today, I put "no one here by that name." On one I put "unknown."

Plus, I received a mail notification that the warranty on my totaled car has expired. Since it was a 2000 model, you know it had expired long ago.

A news magazine stated it was illegal to sell warranties and pointed out horrible business practices. One woman with dementia was sold a warranty. Another had no car and was harangued into buying a warranty. So, I have a little card trying to sell me a warranty. I am going to have a little talk with someone.  Does it ever end?

Wednesday Night Nightmare

Since the wreck, I have had bad dreams about wrecks, dreams I do not want to even think about once awake. Since I still startle at movement of anything on wheels, I try to put the dreams behind me during the day.

Last night must have been a doozy of a wreck, a wreck in my dreams that I cannot remember. I did remember when I awoke, but willed myself to forget.

All the muscles in my body were tensed so and still hurt. It feels like I was running, exercising, and cowering in fear. Well, that is how much my muscles are stiff and achy.  My hands really hurt, just like after the wreck when I was holding the steering wheel tightly and the wreck occurred.

Plus, I am working up to October and being ill. Every day my sinuses are a bit more stuffy. So, I am trying to fight this before it is full-blown illness.

All the other stuff hurts still. Today, I go to have MRIs. Nothing will happen to make it all better, but this is the beginning.

My body feels like it was slammed against a wall.

Have you ever had a wreck and had dreams every night where you have someone slam into your car? Or, maybe it was bad dreams after any trauma?

Resident Groundhog/Woodchuck, etc

Okay, I had chocolate chip cookies and milk for breakfast. I know it is not good for me, but it worked for me.

Usually at 9 am, the grass in the backyard is still wet. Today, before 9 am, it was very dry back there. So, going out to the chickens was pleasant. Today, they had not yet eaten or laid an egg. So, hopefully being fed early will eliminate the egg eating.

Before noon, it was 90 F. With the low humidity, as evidenced by early departure of dew, I can do some yard things without getting wet. The boxes I brought the chickens home in are still sitting out there. Something is dragging garbage around the yard, so I need to get that. Actually, something is dragging bags of recycling.

Instead of taking each recyclable thing out to the bin, I usually keep it inside in a grocery bag and take things out once each day. But, flies and fruit flies come to that inside. So, now I tie up bags and put them in the recycling bin. I have no idea what drags the bags all over the back yard. But, I know who gets to pick it all up. Tonight is the night to get garbage ready since the garbage man will be here by 7 am on Thursday.

Lunch--vegetable soup from Tuesday Free Lunch. I love having prepared no-brainer meals. A bit of chicken for protein, and I was satisfied. Today, the soup was much thicker, and I had more vegetables in it.

Remember I relocated a dead possum? Well, it appears I now have a woodchuck or groundhog, whichever you prefer.  I could not bend enough and handle the sensitive trigger to set the trap, so someone else set it. I was going to use strawberry caps for raccoons, but now I am not sure. I can use lettuce for the groundhog. Two baits in the trap should catch one of the other.

94 F Today! Vegetable Soup

Today was soooo hot. It is like midsummer here today. I was/am a sweaty mess. However, I want this weather to hold on.

Free lunch Tuesday saw vegetable soup, ham and cheese sandwich, crackers, cookies for dessert, and unsweetened tea. Happily, I did not have to stand over this, cooking soup in a hot kitchen. Luckily, there were no peas in the soup. Of course, we got a to-go box/bag with the same items.

For dinner, I put two bottom round steaks and lots of potatoes in a cooking bag and put it all in the oven. My hurt shoulders suffered. This is the first time I have tried to put anything in the oven since the wreck and damage to my shoulders, especially the left one.

Naturally, I made the meat dry. Ten minutes more and it would have burned. I forgot to put in onion, celery, and bell pepper for flavor. But, I did season it all with something...forgot what. At least, Tommy never complains. I tasted one bite and the meat was delicious. I didn't dare eat more of the beef. I had potatoes and my ham sandwich from lunch. I still have the soup and sandwich from lunch.

We are so exciting. I took a nap while he watched tv. Before the lunch, he took me to buy a newspaper at the paper office. And, I returned something I bought two of at Lowe's.

I bought something at Lowe's, could not find it and thought I imagined buying it. When I ended up with two, I was puzzled. Anyway, he drove me to Lowe's to make a return. Neither of us bought anything today, a good thing.

One of my chickens is laying an egg. They eat it before I can get there....grrr. got to stop it. I forgot where wooden eggs are found, but I will call around. I wonder if a pink plastic Easter Egg will work?

So, summer is still with me and I have no complaints. What is it like where you live? And, remind me where you live.

Recipe: Favorite Quiznos Sandwich

So I will not forget, I am posting what I like here. I have only eaten one sandwich there, always the same one and not with all ingredients listed on the board for Traditional sandwich. There are choices of cheese, for instance.

On both sides of the bun squirt Ranch Dressing in squiggles--not too much.
Put shaved meat on sandwich. I only eat the turkey, leaving off the ham and beef listed.
Put sliced black olives and sliced tomatoes and cheddar cheese on top. I leave off the red onions, too.

Of course, I don't have the little machine that slowly pulls the sandwich through while it heats the top, melting the cheese. The oven on my stove will work!

Add shredded lettuce and squish the sandwich together and wrap tightly. The wrapping tightly, even for two minutes makes the sandwich stay together and the heat seems to make it taste better all the way through.

Of course, I order this like I want it, so there are other possibilities on the menu board.  You know how the ads have sandwiches or menu item pictures that are better than the actual things? Well, the actual sandwich at Quiznos are better looking, fuller, and prettier than the pictures. Okay, the meat might not have intricate folds and the tomatoes are not so even, but the sandwich's appearance is not disappointing.

Some day, I might write this in my book of recipes I like. Oh, they do not load one side of the bun and then fold the top over the fillings. The meat, cheese and all fillings are loaded onto both side of the bun, then squished together. It makes a very fat sandwich that is delicious-looking and delicious.

I read that at its peak, Quiznos had 5000 shops and now there are only 800. I certainly want to eat this sandwich if they all fold. I doubt this shop will close since it is near Huntsville Hospital and the complex that is in that area. I think this sandwich shop has very healthy sandwiches which should appeal to health professionals.

For the $7+tax this 7" sandwich cost, I am quite sure I can purchase the ingredients for the same or less and have sandwiches for days. The sandwich was much longer than 7 inches.

Have you eaten at Quiznos? What is your favorite sandwich? Have you notice their closing in your area?

Groceries--September 9-15, 2018

family pack boneless, skinless chicken breasts (7)
4 apples
4 bananas
2 half gallons a2milk
salad greens
half gal. orange juice

About $25.

Since I bought so many vegetables at the Farmer's Market, last weekend, I bought little this week. The apples are so large that I will eat half each day. I can eat a whole one, but then I feel stuffed. It's good to have chickens so I have some place to use the banana peels and apple cores and stale bread (no mold).

Friday Good Samaritan

As we were leaving Quiznos in Huntsville on Friday but still in the parking lot, I saw a woman sort of running beside our car, smiling and saying something. At first, I didn't know she wanted to talk to me, but I told Tommy to stop. She came the window and asked if we would take her husband to the gas station to get gas for their car. The gas station was only two blocks away, but I said we would.

Her husband came to the car so sweaty and thanks us profusely. It turned out that he had been to get gas three times already. He only had a gallon can and had taken the five-gallon one out of the car the day before.

We took him to the station and he got an orange Slurpy, filled the tiny can and we were off. His car was sitting on a slope and he thought there was not enough gas getting to the whatever.

We told them we would wait and see if the gas worked. It did not help at all. The car tried to turn over but would not. She asked if we would take them home. We agreed. They were on the road we needed to follow to get to the interstate and home.

Sure enough, when we got there, a five gallon gas can along with others, were sitting in their yard. They apologized for maybe ruining our sandwiches. We were sitting in the church parking lot that was next to their house, so we ate our sandwiches there under a tree.

We saw a temperature sign that read 98 F. This was in Huntsville, AL.

As soon as we left with them in the car, I apologized and said I had to eat. I ate half a sandwich. When Tommy started to eat, I stopped him, telling him I was eating his sandwich. He would not like mine because it had black olives and Ranch Dressing.

I gave him the other half of his sandwich since I had eaten the other half. I started on my sandwich. Remember, I have two halves, too, and have eaten half of his. I could not finish the first of my two halves. I remarked I was full and rewrapped about 3/4 of my sandwich.

Tommy NEVER realized how much of his sandwich I ate. And, I did not volunteer the information! Later that afternoon, after we paid for the car, got insurance, and paid for tag transfer and tax on car and he went home, I ate the rest of my sandwich. He still has not figured out I ate half of his sandwich. Shhhh!

I suppose it could be dangerous to give rides to strangers. But, I would have wrecked the vehicle to thwart any bad stuff. We were in congestion, so surrounded by cars and people. Besides, somehow I trusted the woman. And, I am very wary of strangers who want a ride. This is the first person in 30 years that I have given a ride.

Also, I told them how anyone who got food stamps could get wifi for $10/month with no other charges. They beyond thrilled. As we neared their house, the husband said we gave him a ride, took them home, and gave us great information to help them.  They thanked us over and over and apologized for disrupting our lunch. To us it was not a great thing to do.

So, I suppose we lived to be stupid another day.

Do you like Quizno sandwiches? Have you ever helped strangers by giving them a ride?

Ortho Visit

On Friday, exbf took me to orthopedist in Huntsville since I was carless. Now that he has a walker, he can get in by himself. Before, I had to get a wheelchair for the both of us. When I call for a wheelchair, the questions  and comments are unending. Why can't he push me in? How can he drive if he needs a wheelchair? We only push patients inside. Do either of you need help getting out of car and into wheelchair?

I actually want to take a few steps as it sort of loosens me up after sitting. He cannot take one step at all, ever, without assistance from canes or walker.

Yesterday, he lit up when he saw the high chairs in the orthopedist's waiting room. There are normal chairs, some slightly higher, and some really high ones. Of course, he wanted the really high chairs. I stay in the wheel chair. All the chairs have nice high sturdy arms, wide seats, and sturdy cushioned bottoms. There are wide paths between all the chairs and areas. I mean really wide!

Lots of MRIs were ordered for office here, so I don't have to travel so far. Since I actually have a car now, thanks to exbf (aka Tommy), I can take myself anywhere. I still cannot drive to oncologist because the C word makes my brain turn to mush and I need the support. I don't want to even think during the trip down.

We ate lunch and finished the car purchase.

I was going to write more about car and chickens, but this post was getting too long.

New-to-me Car

Impala Ultimate or something like that
2009
6 cylinder
less than 47, 000 miles
driven by 88-year-old woman, really, it was.
$5000.00

Not on a car lot. I asked someone if she knew anyone with a car to sell. She said, "Yes, I do." She called him. I met him 30-min later. Before I even saw the car, I called exbf to come buy it for me. He got in his car and drove the 62 miles to here. The guy was asking $5500. I asked him if he would take $5000. He slapped the trunk and said, "SOLD!"

The body is perfect. Car was kept in a carport. Oh, it is silver or gray. The interior is immaculate and the ac is very cold. The Altima hurt my back. This one does not.

This is the kind of car I was hoping for. A car being sold because owner did not drive anymore.  Seriously, I have been wishing for this kind of car, the circumstances. She bought the car in 2009. He asked her when she last put brakes on the car. She said she never put brakes on it at all.

LUCK FAVORS THE PREPARED MIND. I feel lucky today. I have asked everyone I know if they knew anyone selling a car.

I asked the guy if I could take it to a shop to have owner assess it. He let me. He never even asked my last name! He said my friend knew. The tread is great, but the tires are at the end of their life. The battery is old, too, so that will not hold up this winter. Otherwise, he said it was a great car. Of course, my car sits out in the weather and limbs fall on it, so this one will meet the same fate.

When we were in the bank, I said to exbf, "So, I suppose now you are not getting me a birthday present?" He said, "THIS is your present." I was kidding and he knew it.

The best I found that I might afford were cars around 2000-2004 that cost $9K to $11K. Newer cars were double that.

I get it tomorrow because the guy did not bring the title.

The Other Two!

Tuesday
I brought home three hens.

Wednesday
One was torn open by a raccoon.

Thursday
The other two are still alive.

Between worrying about the car and hens, I slept little.  The car issue is bothering me so that my colon reacts.

Neighbor friend got things out the car today that I could not lift. Another friend, one who mows for me, is coming to see if he can see how the raccoon got in the pen.  I will have him carry the trap back there and set it.

I am very relieved the hens are okay.

There are two can for trash that has to be carried to the road each week. Then, I have another three. All three of those were in chicken pen to keep them from blowing away or having to be moved for mowing. Of the three, one is for chickens to sit in under the table to protect them from wind or rain or cold. The other sits outside the pen for trash. That leaves one new can, the only one with a lid.

One of the three in the pen was near the door and on its side. When I opened the door to feed them yesterday, the other yellow hen was hiding between the can and the chain link fence. This is perfect for raccoons. They reach through the fence and grab the immobile chicken and rip it limb from gut. So, yesterday, best I could, I removed all the cans from the inside perimeter and put them toward the middle of the pen.

I attribute the hens being alive to the moving of the cans from the walls. Otherwise, they would snuggle up to the fence behind a garbage can. Today, the cans are all where they need to be.

The last hen, Dominique, knew her chickenly duties and performed them well. She scratched here and she scratched there. If I were in the pen, she made sure to scratch dirt all over my feet and onto her food I just put into as clean container!  She scratched dirt through the chain link. However, she only scratched it through the door, never the walls! Consequently, dirt piled up right outside the chain link door. Eventually, the door would not open. Well, I could not force it open, neither could I shovel it away.

My friend today shoveled the mound of dirt in the heat and humidity and in a long-sleeved shirt. Now, I can get the door open. Before, I could barely squeeze through, snagging skin and clothing. The mosquitoes are so thick and fierce that I wore a heavy sweat shirt over my summer blouse and with long pants and feet in sandals sprayed with Cutter.  It was like an oven out at 8 am, but anything is better than being blanketed by blood-sucking mosquitoes. My friend was looking very hot. He was on his way to work, but he knew what I needed.

So, other than stress about the car, I am a happy camper today.

Then, Heartbreak!

On Tuesday night, I finished the day with the glow of new chickens surrounding me. When I went out Wednesday morning, one of my precious red chickens was dead, her chest ripped open.

With a heavy heart, I tried to find how the raccoon got into their cage. I know it was a raccoon because of the chest being ripped out. I could not pick it up because I don't have enough balance to bend that far on uneven ground, using both hands to pick it up without chancing a face-plant.

When I first went into the pen, chickens were running and screaming for their lives. I thought--foolish chickens, you are safe. Then, in my search for eggs, I found the body.

No one I asked had time to help me. Well, the body will be gross by morning. Plus, there will probably be two bodies, maybe three.

My second career as a chickie mama was short. I cannot afford more hens. I really hate raccoons.

Today, I used my birthday card from KFC and got a free 2-piece meal. Of course, I got extra gravy. I carried the carcass home to the two who are left. But, they were so hysterical, I am not sure they ate it or the oats I gave them.

I also got my hair cut. I think this cut will work. It feels nice and swingy. You know that feeling?

Low-key Day But Exciting

The feather pattern of the Golden Laced Wyandotte is a sight to behold.
Golden Laced Wyandotte

On my birthday, I got up about 8 am and got ready for the day...very slowly. I forgot how long it took to get to the place where I buy chickens--Dutch Oven Bakery. The guy wanted me there before the lunch rush. I got there a bit before 11 am.

They told me to just go wait in the yard for them. I drove next door and sat in the cool, bugless serenity of huge trees. Clothes on the line added to the serenity. I watched farm animals of all sorts. Chickens roamed over more than ten acres, bounded by cows where I could see. Waiting another hour would not have been a problem. The house is next door to the Mennonite bakery.

Two older teens came to catch chickens. The first chicken caught was absolutely the loudest chicken I have ever heard. I commented to the guy holding the chicken that I did not think that chicken had ever felt human touch.

The $12 chickens were $35 total. I went back to the bakery and bought three pieces of candy at $0.39 each and ate one.

On the way back, I stopped at Ruby Tuesday and had their $5 salad bar special. It was delicious, but suddenly my digestive system need to leave and go home. I did not make it.

I went back out and car shopped. I liked one that was "22-9." I gulped when the guy said that. I went to three places, actually four, but I won't go back to the fourth place.

Later, I got a DQ small chocolate ice cream.

So, now I have three captive chickens, ripped from their life of free-ranging. I sort of feel bad about this. They don't know what my yard is like the first chickens I got in 2009 knew. So, they will be held captive and fed their greens when I pull grass for them. I will be good to them, but there is no place like home...their beautiful, grassy home.

My life will now be dominated by getting healthy and free food for these girls. Right now, I am going to redeem my KFC card for a two-piece dinner.

One hen is a Golden Laced Wyandotte. The other two are light red hens. Actually, all three are mutts, but I recognize the distinctive pattern on the Wyandotte. Pictures later.

Is there a car you would recommend I not get? I have already eliminated Jeep.

Grilled Squash Fans

When I find a recipe I like in a magazine, eventually I tear out the whole page with the recipe so I can get rid of the magazine. I have had the now-wrinkled, ripped out page from the Southern Living May 1987 issue since I tore it out 31 years ago. I cannot believe it has been that long ago.

This is one of my favorite recipes to serve, whether at home or as a dish to take somewhere and share. I believe this would cook as well in the oven as the on grill. I think that I cooked these in the oven a few times. So, no grill marks.

You can go HERE and view the grilled squash fans ingredients. Plus, get the recipe. Okay, I copied the ingredients and directions below.

Ingredients

  • 6 yellow squash
  • 3 plum tomatoes
  • 2 Tablespoon chopped fresh basil
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • 1 Teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1/2 Cup olive oil
  • 3 garlic cloves, pressed
  • Garnish: fresh basil sprigs

How to Make It

Step 1
Cut each squash lengthwise into 1/4-inch slices, cutting to within 1 inch of stem end. Cut tomatoes into 1/4-inch slices.

Step 2
Combine chopped basil and next 4 ingredients in a large bowl, stirring until blended. Add squash and tomato, tossing gently to coat; let stand 1 hour.
Step 3
Remove vegetables from marinade, reserving marinade; insert tomato slices between squash slices, and secure with wooden skewers.
Step 4
Grill, covered with grill lid, over medium-high heat (350° to 400°) 8 minutes on each side or until crisp-tender, basting often with reserved marinade. Garnish, if desired.

My way
I hand select each crook neck squash and the tomatoes which must be just the right size. I do like the tomatoes to extend a bit further. I think other tomato varieties would work as well. I use Roma. I like the look of the crook neck squash but the straight neck yellow squash is fine.
If you are using produce from your garden, ignore sizes, just assemble what you have regardless of sizes.
This is a slippery last step. So, be prepared to not be able to answer the phone, pick up a child or stir anything on the stove. Work over the bowl or a plate! A dishtowel nearby can really be helpful.
Do you like squash and tomato? You will love this. The squash fans are an impressive presentation. Did you grow all the ingredients in your garden? I know sluggy did. And, I have green plates to serve them.

Okay, so I have a few things to do on my birthday, but I will be back!

Mean Man

After parking in a handicap parking space, I got out of the car, walked to the back of the car, turned around and opened the car to get my bottle of water. An older man sort of stopped and stepped one step between my car and the other and was looking intently for a moment at something. I figured he was just a flirt, and ignored him. He walked to a cart in the parking lot and was using it to lean on as he limped along.

He sort of veered toward me making me think he might clip my ankles. So, slowing down I sort of put my hand out to ward him off. He gave me a dirty look and veered away, saying, "You are not supposed to use that handicapped space because you don't have a hang tag and are not handicapped!" He was so mean. I said, "I don't have a hang tag." He interrupted me saying, "See, you are not supposed to park there."

I was trying to say that I had a handicapped license plate. I told him that I had a 100% disability that was not going away. He was snarling at me accusing me of lying, saying he wanted nothing to do with me, rolling his eyes, saying "uh huh" and "yeah, right!" "pft.",,,over and over. So dismissive. So insulting!

I was humiliated because others were looking and he was loud. LOL so,  briefly told them the problem of him calling me a liar.

After I went my way to the pharmacy, he was there. So, I got set and told him all in one breath that my car was totaled when someone hit me and I could not take the handicap tag and put it on the rental car. He said, "sure you did." Then he got nastier than his old,  mean self and told me to quit following him, that he wanted nothing to do with me.

People were turning to look...oh, humiliation!

I do have a hang tag somewhere. And, I went and retrieved my handicap tag from the wrecked car. I suppose I will tape it in the back window. I have a tag receipt with the designation on it, so I have no fear of police or a ticket.

I asked exbf what would happen if I rammed the mean man with the electric cart and just kept bearing down on the guy. Exbf said, "I would drive straight to Cullman and bail you out!" THAT MADE ME LAUGH! I could afford to back up and hit him another time or two! There is no use going to jail for a simple injury. Might as well really hurt the guy. By the way, I have a rich fantasy life.

I was going to find him and ask him if he went to church. He would have said yes and I would have said, I thought you must be a Christian. Then, I was going to say to him that from his attitude toward someone who had irreversible problems that he must be a Republican, too. But, he got away. Lucky him.

For the life of me, I do not understand people like that. Now, all you Christians and Republicans, don't get in a snit.

Birthday Week--I cannot count!

Saturday exhausted me so that I slept for 24 hours between Saturday night and Sunday night. I would stay awake for 15 minutes or an hour and then go back to a deep sleep. There was no rolling about and half sleeping. Saturday, I took no melatonin, so it was real sleepiness or exhaustion.

I did too much Saturday considering the considerable pain I am still in. I suppose I saved on gas by staying home today. Saved on food because I at so little, saved on everything that involves laundry.

In a bit, I am reheating the frozen chicken fingers from DQ, eating a salad, and putting a chicken in the crock pot. It is Monday now.

I must have forgotten how to count since my birthday in Tuesday, 11th of September. So, there goes the countdown.

One thing that is making me exhausted. I have a huge case of PTSD from the wreck. I startle at cars. Other electric carts and buggies being pushed startle me, too. I think everything on wheels that moves might hit me.  I hope this goes away soon because the sudden contraction of muscles hurts me and tires me. My skin hurts!

Oops, I did not mean to post this since I just posted my groceries. So, you can go back if you want to read what I bought.

Groceries September 2-8, 2018

4 apples
2 small jars Dromedary pimientos
2 half gallons a2milk
2 bananas
5 lbs. okra given to me
cream cheese
salad--marked down
12 pack Caffeine Free Cokes
2 half gallons a2milk
2 bananas

I do not eat okra, but I got this to fry for exbf.

Dromedary is the only brand of pimientos grown and packed in the US.

There was nothing I needed at stock-up prices. I checked the ads and mark-down shelves. Pooh!

Fifth and Sixth Day of My Birthday Week

Friday, I planned to go get chickens. But, I was not in the mood. So, I suppose I will wait until it is so rainy out I will not want to do it again.

When I talked to exbf last on Thursday, he said he would see me tomorrow. I said "okay" and hung up. About five minutes later, I called him and asked him what he meant. Well, he was so confused about whether the appointment was on or off that he was coming Friday morning.

When I called the ortho office Friday to see about my appointment that was cancelled, cancelled, and then cancelled again, the person said, "Oh, yes, you have an appointment at 11:30. You still have time to get here."

Mind you, once was a voice mail, the other was a text message. Both were cancellations from their office. There was no chance for questions. The confirmation was a chance to press 1 for yes or 2 for no.

This was about 9:20. I explained that I needed to wash my hair and bathe and that my friend 62 miles south of me would have to do the same and come pick me up. She seemed disappointed and gave me another appointment.  I told her I did not want to get in trouble with the office if I ever forgot another time. She said she had recorded what happened. Whew!

The cancellation was disappointing because I was all set for a Quiznoes. I love those things.

I consulted nurses at two other physicians' offices. There are lots of things to figure out. Whew!

This may sound stressful, but some problems were settled, making me less stressed.

Friday evening I was given about five pounds of okra. This will be fried for exbf as I cannot stand okra. I took another coupon to DQ for two meals. I threw out one order of fries, put the toast in a Ziploc in the refrigerator, froze most of the chicken.

From Freeosk at Walmart, I received a tiny bit of candy--Sweet Tart soft and chewy ropes--more like a gummy bear. I would never buy these for myself. They are pure sugar and too tart for me.

Saturday, I tried to shop for chickens, but both places were closed. I just sat and watched turkeys for a bit.

Saturday was a beautiful day. I drove around town, scoping out places for free food. The people with the pear tree in the front yard absolutely hated it. So, I suppose they killed it on purpose. That's two pear trees gone!

The pecan trees are alive, at least. While driving in heavy Saturday traffic, I could not see whether the pecans were plentiful, but there were pecans. Monday, I will call the place that will give me free figs.

I thawed three of the chicken fingers, ate salad, an apple, and had chocolate ice cream.

Also, cruised a car lot where we got exbf's car. Then, I got milk at Publix and talked to a guy for about an hour, a guy whose child was in a class where I subbed.

Both days were busy although low-key.

After a 12-hour long sleep, I was surprised it was Sunday morning.

Fourth Day of My Birthday Week

So, I got little done on Thursday. I had trouble sleeping for a few days, but straightened it out on Thursday by sleeping a little and was able to sleep on Thursday night, straightening out my days and nights.

Fall allergies are trying to lay me low. I had a headache for about two minutes, and it went away like magic. Then, I had earaches for about an hour and then they were okay. I think the pneumonia shot is working its magic. I have fewer sinus infections every year. But for two days, I felt awful.

I did get a cup of chocolate ice cream from DQ.

It was a frugal day as I cooked nothing, neither washed nor dried clothes. I think I ate only a cheese sandwich and four grapes.

The sun was shining, so it was a good day.

Third Day of Birthday Week and Glasses Found

Wednesday night, I received a voicemail saying my doctor appointment had been cancelled. Thirty minutes later, I received a call to confirm the same appointment. ??? So, this is something to find out the truth. Today, Thursday, I got a text about the cancelled appointment, reminding me to be there. ???

Wednesday night, when my friend came by to take out my garbage, I asked him to please look for my glasses. He found them on the floor and under furniture in thirty seconds! For twelve days I had searched.

He brought his nephew who has been coming here for about three years. Even when he was less than two, he talked to me and was so cute. He is the kind of kid that travels well--no whining, no getting into things, no asking for things, no constant interrupting, looks at you, nods or talks in response. He asks what things are...so cute. His mother is deaf, so he knows how to sign. I love having tiny company. I gave his nephew a cup of applesauce to take home and a nickel. Friend also brought in something heavy from my car.

Oh, we do allow him to talk. We listen to him and answer questions. He is not incessantly whacking on one of us to listen to him. He has never ventured one step beyond where we are. But, he decided to go into the kitchen, look around and come back to us. He said, "It is quiet in there."  I agreed, not knowing if that was good or bad.

I told exbf I wanted chickens for my birthday. I got a tarp to put over the top of their pen so the chickens will stay dry. This is my third tarp in nine years. I guess the tarp is part of "chickens for my birthday."  Maybe the same friend will put it up and tie it down for me.

So, Thursday was quiet. I am reveling in being well, which, as you remember, I have not been for so long.

Do you dread some children coming to your home?  And, do you look forward to others being in your home? I am not talking about grandchildren who would always be welcome.

Second Day of Birthday Week and Potato Soup

Well, fun is thin today. I was really tired from the lunch day. I did get lots of sleep and rest, so that is a gift in and of itself. Thanks to Gordon, we have overcast skies, but, thankfully, no rain.

In a few hours, I am going to get a small cup of chocolate ice cream from Dairy Queen. I love their ice cream. Plus, it does not make me ill like soft serve from Burger King.

This afternoon was a salad with the fresh tomatoes from the Farmer's Market. I gave exbf two yesterday. This evening, I will boil eggs, saute the zucchini and squash. A boiled egg can keep me from eating junk some days.

All my life, I have absolutely hated potato soup. But, I tasted some from the deli at Publix and think I can make soup like they do.  I cannot go wrong putting bacon and cheese in diced and boiled potatoes. Right? Bacon and cheese can make anything delicious. Right? Yes, I do know to partially drain potatoes and mash some of them.

Daddy made horrible potato soup. But, I doubt that during the Great Depression they had the luxury of putting cheese and bacon in boiled potatoes. They were probably lucky if they had enough potatoes to feed 12 children.

I was going to use a coupon for free-ish fast food, but I nixed that.

So, that is it for day 2. Not much. But, I am not so tired.

Fooled me once...

...shame on you. When exbf cut my hair 3" instead of 1/2", I was furious! Today, he butchered it even more. He asked at the last minute how much I wanted cut off. He used his index finger to measure an inch, two inches, and three inches. I got a little loud and fussy, showing him where a half inch was on his finger.

He only combed my hair to the middle of head, refusing to comb to bottom of hair growth at nape of my neck. Then, he abandoned the comb and sort of used his hands to gather all my hair like he was going to put it in a low pony tail. What is wrong with him???

I kept taking the pick and combing it spread like it fell on my shoulders naturally. Later, he told me he never used the comb but once. No wonder his clumsy fingers felt so strange just knocking my hair about and pushing it flat.

Now, it looks worse than the last time. This will cost $20 to get it fixed, not completely corrected. What is wrong with me???

Fooled me twice, shame on me!!!

He is doing this on purpose, so he can pay for the haircut!

I told him today I was going to have a birthday week. He did one other thing wrong which depressed me so much, I still cannot recover.  It would have cost nothing, but been the most fun!

Starting off my birthday week has been a wreck.

I had told him that eating the free Senior lunch where they have real plates and utensils would start it off since I am always happy with the prospect of going there. The day went downhill after that.

We had burgers from their outdoor grill, nice thick slices of tomatoes, lots of lettuce, cheese on the cooked burgers, a piece of watermelon, apple crumble. I grabbed the watermelon from my plate and ate it first. It was like a sweet, red slice of heaven.

A compounding pharmacist spoke and gave us a lot of good information, plus Q and A. At last, I found out where to get a immunization shot that does not include tetanus.

Have you ever known anyone who seemingly was bound to thwart simple or important plans with actions or attitude?

Radio Flyer--Buying New Wheels.

The wheels were only $8. They are labeled "lawnmower wheels." Actually, they will go on a Radio Flyer little red wagon. I think. Online, RF wagon wheels are $13.24 + shipping.

Someone gave the wagon to me so I could bring groceries from the car to house. It is secondhand and was abused although new. I valued it and took care of it. However, exbf kept yanking it and popping the wagon up the one step from backyard to front yard. I had told him not to yank it. But, every time he was alone with the wagon, I could hear what he did.

Finally, he came in one day and told me the wagon lost a wheel...grrr. I calmly told him I knew why and he could buy me a new wagon, so he did. He neither denied nor confirmed what he had done after I told him why the wheel broke...lol. We never discussed it.

Tractor Supply had wheels that were something like $38/each. The price for these wheels at Walmart are more what I can afford--$8. They are about a half inch or  an inch larger in diameter, so I got two and can replace both back wheels. If I put one on and it seems to work okay, I may take the other back.

Of course, I will not be putting these on the wagon! Someone else will have to do the job.

The wagon given to me was a cheap one from WM, only $75. The new one was from a dealer, a bit over $100. The cheap one had plastic wheels and the higher priced and newer wagon has metal wheels. I can tell the difference in the weight of the more expensive wagon.

The Walmart wagon was without a handle when I got it. RadioFlyer would not replace it since I bought it at WM.  ??? I told them how disappointed I was with the service from an old and trusted company, that I had owned their wagon before. I offered to buy  a new handle. They refused. About six months later, a new, metal handle arrived in the mail. I installed it with a screwdriver.

Lots of people have encouraged me to just throw this rusty, faded wagon away. They all will "help" me  and carry it to the curb...and then take the useless piece of junk off my hands. Why do people do things like that--disparage the looks and worth and suddenly want my junk. I am not so hopelessly old that I do not see what know why they want me to get rid of it.

My children had a Radio Flyer  red wagon that never failed. And, it had a metal handle. So does the new wagon.

Every time I contemplate the quality between these two wagons, I am disappointed with the degradation of products. The first wagon is a poor example of a fine wagon company that has been know for quality. Yet, the standards of the WM wagon are so low that the original company will not stand behind the product. So many things known for high standards are ruined by the demands of a company for a cheap and cheaply made product. Schwinn ruined its reputation to sell in one store. It makes me sad for our demand for supplies and disregard for quality.

Your turn

Have you ever had to replace plastic wagon wheels? Did you or your children have Radio Flyer red wagons?

strawberries
grapes
slaw mix of carrots, red cabbage and green cabbage $1.79

1 lb. unsalted butter $2.99
1 lb. salted butter $2.99
can Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed can milk

* from the Farmer's Market

I have no idea how much I spent, and I am too tired to figure it out.

In order to limit my consumption of juice, I only buy oj once a month, sometimes less. I could drink it everyday, all day!

The last mushrooms I bought spoiled because of the wreck and pain and not bending over.

I saved all the tops where I bit off the strawberries. These will catch a raccoon. Raccoons love strawberries. If you use tuna, usually you catch the neighbor's cat. Cats are not tempted by strawberries.

The buns were from the bread store.

I asked a Publix employee in the produce to shuck the corn, cut off the stalk part left, and to cut them in half. Done!

It was FREE

Walmart has a kiosk called a Freeosk. It gives out free things if you interact with the kiosk and your phone. I had no idea what to do and could barely read the directions and definitely could not read on my phone.

An employee helped me. The free item was Johnson Baby Shampoo and Wash. Hey, it is soap.

Silly Me assumed the 16 oz. bottles were what I got for free. No, it was a one ounce bottle. I will definitely get each and every freebie from the Freeosk.

Have you seen the Freeosk is Walmart? Have you gotten anything free?
