I Won a book; Free Lunch Tuesday

Even though I set the clock at 8 o'clock Tuesday morning, never mind I set it for pm. So, I was not ready when exbf arrived. Plus, I had turned off my cell and poor thing had to struggle to get to door and was ready to unlock it when he got to the door. So, he could either come in or struggle back to car and sit. He chose to go sit with my encouragement. Usually, he just calls and tells me he is here.

At the lunch today, we had a man dressed as the founder of our city. He gave us a lot of information about the founding and the founder, all the while dressed in period dress and speaking in the voice of the founder, Col. Cullman. VERY interesting.

At the end of his talk, the minister in charge had three questions. Knowing the answer and raising hand first would win a prize. AH HA! I knew the first question, not from the talk, but from where I live. Col. Cullman did include it in his talk.

Who was the first mayor of Cullman? My hand shot up. "Betz" is the answer. I have lived in the Betz Addition since 1974. No one refers to the subdivision as the Betz Addition, but it is on the Historic sign three blocks away and on the papers from buying the house that identify the lot which we bought. So, my hand shot into the air. (Actually, some of the older men do know this area and use "Betz Addition" to identify exactly where I live.)

I won--Legendary Locals of Cullman County. It is the only county and city in the world with this name. The book is 127 pages full of pictures with text. I would say that less than half of each page is dedicated to pictures.

Lunch was sort of different. I was looking at exbf's plate and asked if I could have a bite while my plate was coming. He said I could, and I picked up one piece of chicken. Well, no, it was friend okra.
I thought I would throw up from the slime and taste. Nasty!

We had: a casserole of chicken; sliced, boiled eggs in cream of chicken soup or something, and crushed ruffled potato chips on top; fried okra, delicious warm roll, and chocolate cake with scrumptious chocolate icing. Since he hates, hates, HATES boiled eggs, I picked off and out of the casserole all I could find. Then, he offered me some of his casserole and I dipped out huge, hidden chunks of boiled eggs. He was really glad I got it out for him...lol. He mostly filled up on okra.

We took a short ride to a church where all the dogwoods and azaleas were in bloom. Lovely.

Then, I went to a pharmacy where there is a nurse who specializes in diabetic shoes. I wanted information on getting shoes for diabetics. I suppose now I have all the information I need or all I can think of right now.

Back at my home, I gave him an Easter basket. It was actually an Easter bucket I got for a dime one year to grow plants in. The Easter Bunny gave him a huge chocolate Easter Bunny-Russell Stover, a book of 140 crossword puzzles, Easter egg with chocolate cream inside, jelly beans, and a small container of Reese's peanut butter bunny cereal. The basket had the accordion-folded paper "grass" bought half price. He commented on the "good chocolate" bunny--RS. The first thing he did after examining it all was start on the jelly beans. I was not aware he liked them that much.

This Cipro exhausts me. So, dinner was not what I planned. We had chicken in the crockpot, slaw, and field peas with snaps. I could barely get it on his plate and take it to him. I lay down.

I had planned to dye eggs but knocked the bowl of hard-boiled eggs out of the refrigerator and they rolled all over, cracking and collecting trash--a hair, bit of dust, some black specks, and disgusting stuff all around. No dyed eggs. One of them rolled out of sight. Then, tonight I found the brown egg  in the dark, narrow space between refrigerator and counter...sigh. I may make egg salad from the eggs when I take off shell and rest of yucky stuff.

The Jello never happened. I was hurting too much to grate carrots for carrot/pineapple salad. So, Easter food will be over two meals...lol. Fruit salads will be on the menu next time he comes. Neither of us was disappointed.

By the way, the chicken was given to me--organic and priced at $17 for the four-pound bird. I really could tell the difference in taste. I could tell it had not been injected with salty, chemical stuff. Exbf exclaimed over the price. I sent the rest of the chicken home with him to clean meat from bones while I kept the rest of the breast we did not eat.

Yep, once again--I WON. It was a  very good day as I took a nap when he left at 6 pm.

Do you love winning as much as I do? Would you ever or have you ever bought a hen this expensive?

Healthiest Easter Candy; Easter; Potato Salad

I have #3 and #4 in the last two weeks. Actually, all these candies are delicious. Well, I have not eaten the first two. Healthiest Easter Candy

This is being written on Sunday as exbf is coming tomorrow. He has a doctor visit for his disability on Tuesday, a free lunch day. This meal on Monday won't be really an Easter meal like I wanted. Carrots, potatoes, and cabbage and onions will be cooked in the oven. Garlic, celery, bell pepper, salt and pepper will season the oven cooked vegetables. I will put in four turkey thighs because they are thawed and need to be cooked.

I also took out a frozen boneless ham because I do not want turkey thighs. It should have been taken from the freezer at least on Saturday for it to be thawed. So, I will put it in crock pot or oven to thaw. We can have ham sandwiches for lunch with leaf lettuce. Maybe I will get a tomato. He can have turkey thighs and I will have ham again for dinner.

I was going to make Easter fare before Easter, but I am waiting until the week after Easter for that. If it doesn't happen on Easter or Easter weekend, what's the difference?

Since it is going to be coldish on Monday, the food will be okay and the oven won't heat up the house.

When he comes after Easter, I will have Spring fare. I have to have my Jello eggs.

This man hates potato salad, so I never make it. I don't think I have had potato salad since I met him in 2006. He becomes loud and adamant about his loathing of potato salad. So, the other day I told him I was not trying to persuade him to eat it, but just tell me calmly what he hated about it.

He hates cold crunchy potatoes. I think he has eaten too much church food. Some of those potato salads have half-cooked potatoes, and I cannot eat those either. He cannot stand cold potatoes. ??? I told him that when potato salad is first made, it is usually hot. He sort of conceded he might eat hot potatoes, just not cold. What else? What about eggs that he hates, too. Nope. He does not want to get those big chunks in his mouth. ???

He has obviously eaten some horrid potato salad and cannot get past it. I also have seen church ladies' potato salad where it looks like they quartered the egg, threw it in the potato salad, and it was not cooked well in the middle of the yolk. Those gross me out! My plan is to take boiled eggs and mush them with a fork until he cannot discern them. The yellow mustard will disguise the egg yolks.

I need to question him about how he feels about eating crunch celery. I may have to whir it up in the blender or just leave the celery out of his portion.

Monday night

And, don't tell me ladies at church or potlucks have never made disgusting potato salad. It is the one thing, in my book, that is not reliable. However, most potato salad is delicious. All the potatoes are gone, so I must buy more. Most of the carrots have been cooked and sent home for him. He got the
majority of the ham. Since I gave him most of the cabbage, I may cook the rest tonight.

This meal was definitely not a spring meal. But, it was chilly today, so it was just great.

He is gone with gallon bag containing everything I mentioned except for the turkey thighs. It is so cold here. I still will not wear socks and shoes. Summer is coming. I just know it is summer despite the cold.

How about the crunchy potatoes in potato salad and raw eggs? Grossed out like me?

Compliment, Frozen Yogurt, Candy, Vaccine

Thursday, the sun finally came out on Thursday and the rain stopped! And, it dried up just in time. People hadstarted building arks, and a friend said she saw people and animals going by two by two. The afternoon was as brilliant as the morning was gloomy. But, then it became cold! That's okay just as long as the sun shines.

When I was shopping at WM on Thursday, a woman greeted me in such a friendly manner that I knew we had to be acquainted. Plus, she looked familiar. When I met up with her a few minutes later, we had gone in a circle and met again, she greeted me familiarly. So, I asked her name and made no connection and asked her where I knew her. It turned out she was a teacher. Immediately, she started telling me what a good substitute I was when I did that, saying she was impressed with me and my ability, that I was an exceptional sub.

She was very effusive. I pressed her for what, exactly, impressed her. If I was that good, I surely wanted to know what I was doing so right. Wouldn't you? So, she did!

That made my day. I felt well that day. I was happy to start the day. But, I felt lighter after talking to her. I think I smiled more at others. I never knew she was a "fan."

Every day, I am going to pay genuine compliments to those who impress me, telling them exactly what they are doing to make such a positive impression. We all deserve to know what we did or are doing right.

One day, about two months ago, I told a young woman studying to be a nurse  what a good job she was doing and how she was an exceptional nurse in the making. The next time I saw her, I gave her explicit compliments, using examples of her exceptional character traits, work ethic, and bedside manner. She was thrilled. I was not trying to gain anything, just impressed and thought she should know how impressive she was.

FYI, I substituted at the end of my career, almost every day. Through the years, I had fallen back on substituting as a way to earn money between jobs and on periods when I was searching for a job after graduation. The pay was good for the job and better than retail. And, it was in my field.

moving on

At Publix I got my a2milk and went by the reduced freezer section. Oh my goodness. There was reduced frozen  yogurt. It was Kemps' Frozen Yogurt Shop fudge Brownie and Cookie Dough at $1 each for 1.78 pints. That is 7.12 pints overall, almost a gallon,  that I bought for $4.

I actually bought four containers even as I wondered where in the freezers I could put them. On the way home, I started eating one of the containers. There are spoons in the deli. There was no room in the freezer. What to do? I took out chicken breasts to cook and a package of ground beef for meat balls and put them in the refrigerator. Soooo, now I must cook!

Three containers  fit in the freezer after I took the meat out. I ate part of the fourth container I started in the car and dumped the rest into a freezer bag. This way, it could be shoved into a corner of the freezer. Sure, it will be a funny shape, but I can eat ice cream in a funny shape. Can you?

A display of Russell Stover eggs caught my attention. Of course, they would! My electric cart went straight to the chocolate display.  I bought one of the Raspberry Whip Eggs. Now, I do remember these, but my loyalties have moved to the Coconut Cream Eggs that I still don't remember eating.

Thursday, I received my last pneumonia vaccine that I will ever need. This is a newly formulated vaccine. Now, each person is recommended to have one each of two different vaccines a year apart. Vaccines are recommended not only for elderly, but people who have asthma or are smokers. I am not a smoker, but I have trouble breathing around any degree of smoking or anything with particulates in the air.

Since I have taken pneumonia shots/vaccines, my sinus problems have been fewer and farther between. The sinus infections are less virulent. There is less down time. Before, a sinus infection raced from head to ears to throat to chest, leaving me very ill. When ir spreads to other parts, the infection is milder and does not leave me totally incapacitated.

As the nurse was telling me the benefits of the vaccine years ago, she mentioned all these benefits. I could hardly believe it, but it is true.

The sun is shining today, Friday, so I am going out to plant bulbs.

Your turn
Are the Russell Stover Raspberry Cream Whip Eggs on your radar? Has anyone checked out the freezer reduced section at Publix? Do you get the pneumonia vaccine? If you do, have you noticed a lessening of your sinus problems and less virulent symptoms when you do have a problem?

Surprise!

bunnychocolate

Last week I was feverish and rummaging around in the cabinet, looking for something, anything. I thought I had found crackers when I saw the yellow end of a box. Nope! It was even better!

You can guess just about how long this bunny has been hiding. I put him where I would not see him and eat him all up. Well, it worked.
I bit his ear off in my excitement, and forgot to take a picture. He was in perfect shape, not broken or melted.
Your turn
Do you ever hide something from yourself to make up for your lack of self control? Isn't it a lovely surprise to find your hidden treasure?
