Groceries May 20-26, 2018

Miracle Whip, qt
16 oz. Kraft Medium Cheddar Cheese
Leaf lettuce
12-pack Coke
doz. eggs
2 bananas
1 single Oui, a treat
5+ pounds boneless, skinless chicken breast
5 bananas
1 qt strawberries

Because of heat and fruit flies, I buy few bananas at once. The first two I bought were eaten Monday and Tuesday. It is easier to buy bananas often than fight fruit flies. In the winter, I can buy six and never see a fruit fly, plus they do not go bad easily.

There are still Cokes here from the last 12-pack of cans I bought.  The MW here at my house has an August use-by date. There is only maybe 1/2 cup left. The contents have changed color, texture and taste, so away it goes. blech! Of course, this coming week I have found MW on sale!

I am eating too much cheese! So, I will cut back.

I spent about $30 this week.

Do you change your banana-buying habit from winter to summer?

  1. I've never been much of a fruit eater and rarely buy it including bananas. I do like vegetables and bought several yesterday. I'm cooking myself some chicken wings today. I guess that will be my holiday meal. My sis and I are contemplating going to see Book Club today- we both are readers and it looks like a fun movie to see for a dreary weekend. I maybe see 2 movies a year!

    1. Nan,
My goal is five fruits a day. I am going to put chicken in the crockpot today, enough to last all week. That does sound like a good movie. I rarely see movies. When we have planned to see one, something happens and it passes from my desire. I think it has been a year since we went to a movie. Have fun.

  2. I don't think I change as I usually only buy 2 or 3 at a time anyway. I also try to find smaller ones. I'm supposed to eat them for the potassium, and while I like them, they don't always agree with me so the only time I'd be looking for a bigger bunch would be if I was going to make banana bread and then I'd deliberately look for softer & riper ones than usual.
I will get the occasional fruit fly infestation but then I just use the old vinegar trick and it usually takes care of it quickly.

    1. Margie,
I use every trick in the book for fruit flies. I bought five because I wanted to use them in jello last week.

  3. I don't buy bananas.
What is Oui? I must go have a look-see.

    1. French yogurt, full fat. In a glass container, cute, tiny, 1/2 cup jar.

  4. French yogurt? I feel deprived because there is nothing like that where I live. No fruit flies, either, so don't change my banana buying habits except that they do not taste the same as they used to which irks me no end. I like sliced bananas and walnuts on my yogurt....and brown sugar. I indulge myself so I won't feel deprived.

    1. tewshooz,
It is full fat yogurt, so creamy. I find it in WM. Where do you live? I like plain yogurt with a few strawberries.

    2. I live over 100 miles from nearest WM. They deliver to my door, but not yogurt, darn. I have to settle for Mountain High plain full fat yogurt at Safeway

  5. I don't buy bananas. I don't care for them, and I just hate the thought of how far they have travelled before they get to my store. Occasionally DH will pick up a bunch on clearance Usually, one or two will go brown/black. I don't even care for baked goods with bananas in them, so I just toss the bananas when they go to the other side.
What is the vinegar trick for fruit flies? We generally only get them in the height of canning season, if I am slow to get to a box of fruit. (We pick our own apples, pears and blackberries) I can keep them away by leaving the fruit outside.

I suppose it is my vinegar trick. The fruit fly trap where you put vinegar in a cup and put plastic wrap with a little hole does not work for me. I can leave it on the counter and get one fruit fly in two days.

I put vinegar in a saucer and drop one drop of Dawn into the vinegar. The vinegar smell draws the fruit flies and the soap makes sure they don't leave. Works for me.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
