Six ways to get around Amazon Prime rates

This Article has ideas for getting Amazon Prime for less. I had it for a short time to get Roku cheaply. I knew free shipping would not be of much help to me. I no longer have it.

Do you have or have you ever had Amazon Prime? If you do, are you getting rid of it? What was/is your main use? I only got Roku even though I had plans to use Amazon in other ways.

  1. That article has some good tips. I continue to have a Prime membership. Comes in handy if you need car parts really fast. We have a Roku and watch Prime video, although I get frustrated by their lack of good or recent movies. Because of that we also have a Netflix and Hulu subscription. Between the three we can usually find something to watch. It's still way cheaper than cable. I also listen to Prime music on my computer while I'm painting.

    1. clamco,
Maybe I need to recommend Prime to my garage if parts come quickly! anything seems cheaper than cable. Thanks. If daughter is in school or any of you have an email that ends with edu, you can get it half price.

  2. I have had a number of people tell me "You must get Prime," but have yet to see any situation in my life that I have suffered without it. That is $1200 year -- and more with the new price increase. I don't need incentive to shop -- in fact, I need incentive not to! And I don't need to spend more time in front of my television either! I generally find a way around the shipping, or if the price is low enough and I still save money, I pay for it. But I shop less than once per month and the shipping is always less than the cost of Prime for a month anyway.

    2. Alex, The cost is only $119/month. I am not trying to convince you! All your reasons are valid.

  3. We've had Amazon Prime for years and will continue even at $119 per year. We order food thru the Subscribe and Save & always make sure the price is better than elsewhere, vitamins, car parts, window blind replacement parts, jewelry repair parts, planner refills, parts for the pressure washer, etc. We always check prices elsewhere first and availability too. It has saved us tons of time, travel and trouble. We only buy what we need, we do not shop as a hobby or out of boredom.

    1. Bellen,
If I could ever find what I need at a lower price, I might order food. So far, what I need is more expensive than sales or deals/markdowns.

    2. Linda, I should be specific about the food: Bengal Spice herbal tea (cheaper at WM but rarely in stock), Taylor's of Harrowgate Scottish Breakfast tea, Vital Wheat Gluten, shelf stable tofu, specific flavors of low sugar Kind Bars, certain spices (turmeric, powdered ginger,Spike),sprouting seeds other than mung beans or alfalfa, nutritional yeast. Most of these items if found at local stores are about 25-30% more expensive. These are not your typical foods.

    3. Bellen,
Those are not things I would buy.

  4. I have had Prime for several years and generally use it to watch movies and programs. I have also bought several items and has saved me some money. I have a line item in my sinking fund budget for it.

    1. Maybe one of these work arounds will work for you. Either of you have a .edu email address?

  6. We have Prime and will keep it. I send so many things to Son1's family (gifts and such) and the same for Son3. Having it makes gift giving much easier for me.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
