Saving Money with Dupes?

For most of my life I have avoided wearing makeup. But, in the last few years, I have worn more makeup than I have for the majority of my adult life. I do wear drugstore makeup, so this may not help me at all. I will check it out more thoroughly.

I wear makeup most of the time when I go to the free lunches or dinners. I rarely wear makeup when I go to the grocery or WM. And, I certainly do not wear it around the house. Revlon lipstick and Covergirl suit me just fine. But, if I wore makeup that was costly, this might help my finances.

I figured out that my lipstick at CVS is twice the price of the same makeup at WM!

Abby at I Pick Up Pennies has a great article about DUPES. This is a way to buy cheaper makeup that is like your favorite expensive brand. Abby explains it.

Do you wear makeup? Expensive makeup or inexpensive makeup? Have you ever heard of dupes?

  1. I wear makeup every time I leave the house. I have " good" makeup, but I also have drugstore stuff for knocking about days. I always use dupes for lipsticks, mascara, and concealer. I can't tell any difference between it and the more expensive lines.

    1. Anne,
I just cannot bear to put on makeup every day. However, since I got my two new lens, it is easier to put on makeup. Thanks for the response that confirms the article. Well, I would have appreciated a response that did not agree with the article.

  2. I pretty much just wear drugstore make up but I like cosmetics and sometimes will go to Sephora or Ulta. I never go out without some on- light foundation, mascara, blush and lipstick. It takes me maybe 3 minutes to apply and I wash it off every night. I've also used MK and Avon and some expensive Arbonne my sister sold!

    1. Nan,
I wear foundation, eye liner, blush, and lipstick. The eyeliner slows me down, so it takes longer than 3 minutes. I cannot bear to have MK on my skin. I itch. We have an Ulta store here, but I cannot go in because of no scooter. Thanks.

  3. I use mascara, eyebrow pencil, eyeshadow and lipstick every day. Without doing my eyes all that shows is my glasses. I buy all but mascara at Dollar Tree and have had no problems with them. I have used Great Lash by Maybelline forever and while I have tried others, I always go back to that one. I do discard the eyeshadow and mascara every 3 months for safety/bacterial reasons so for $8 yearly it's peace of mind.

    1. Bellen,
It is good to hear once more that DT is a good place to buy makeup. I will be wearing makeup today, as I am going to lunch. I discard, too, but not often as I should.

  4. I just wear drugstore makeup. Foundation, eyebrow pencil, eye liner and mascara. Some days, if I'm not going anywhere I go without.

    1. One,
Working at home saves you having to put on makeup--my kind of job. I cannot wear mascara because of allergies and my propensity for rubbing my eyes,

  5. I do wear makeup and it's a combination of drugstore brands and more expensive. My foundation is a brand from France especially for those with Rosacea and it is worth the $40/year. I wear only Maybelline Mascara as I don't have an allergic reaction to it and buy it when it's on for 50% off - so usually $20/year. Eyebrow pencils are Rimmel $15/year - don't wear eyeshadow anymore unless I can find Almay on sale as I react too much. I do prefer Chanel lipsticks ($50 per tube here in Canada) but I can live with Revlon or L'Oreal at $10 per tube. I've never tried Dupes - but my only concern would be if I had an allergic reaction to it or not - not with using a faux brand. While packaging is tempting and pretty I don't go by that alone anymore - some drugstore brands are just as good and no one should be swayed to spend more for something just based on "the name".

    1. Margie,
Allergies plague me, so I am worried if I buy a different makeup. Revlon is only $5 at WM, so maybe you can find it cheaper in Canada or if you come to the States. I would pay what I had to pay if I had rosacea. Rimmel is the brand eyeliner I use, too. II don

  6. I use drugstore brands too and usu put just a hint of makeup on everyday and wash my face every night. I have found that the E.L.F. products/brushes work well for me. Recently I did splurge when I was out of town for a wedding on boutique lip gloss because I have thin lips and was unsure of color. The woman also talked me into a blush which I felt was well worth the splurge because she talked me into 2 colors I would never have chosen that do indeed suit me. Essentially I was paying for the consultation and entertainment of the little splurge to make me feel good and it was worth it. I think once it a while, we need an expert/indifferent 3rd party to get us out of our rut.

    1. I went to a counter and had a consultation. The woman gave me two samples of an entirely different product than I described. AND, she did a poor job on colors. So, I never went back. She was in a hurry to get to other customer. I will definitely go to a different store if I ever go for another consultation!

I'm glad it worked out for you since it was a special occasion. I do get into a rut, it seems.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
