Favorite and Least Favorite Christmas Songs

Christmas music is one of my joys this time of the year. I don't differentiate between the sacred or secular when I listen. The only songs I don't like are the ones like "Christmas Shoes." If you aren't familiar with it, a little boy wants to buy new shoes for his dying mother so she can meet Jesus in new shoes. Gag me!

Something suddenly happened to my car radio, so music while driving is out. My radio in the house will not pick up the all-Christmas station. Hoping things changed from last year, I looked for Christmas music. I found it. After a while I noticed it was not good music. It is called the "faith" station or something like that. Obviously they can only use covers from not-the-top artists. So, I quit listening. It wasn't that it was all religious music or carols, it was just awful.

When I was in exbf's car two weeks ago, I asked him if we could find the good station. He turned on the radio and groaned. "My least favorite song!" The Little Drummer Boy was playing. He just hates that song, along with Sluggy.

Favorites include:
Oh, Holy Night
Silent Night
most religious songs
Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer
whatever the Snoopy song is
Jingle Bell Rock
Happy Christmas (War is Over)
Same Auld Lang Syne
Sleigh Bells
Santa Baby

What are your favorites or ones you cannot stand?

  1. Silent night is my favorite. Not a fan of Elvis but I do have a couple of his Christmas albums, my favorite song being Blue Christmas. I really like anything Bing Crosby sings that is Christmas related

    1. Cheapchick,
I would definitely have to agree with the two artists' Christmas songs. Thanks.

  2. I don't like Jingle Bells. So sick of it. I also don't like medleys. Just sing the whole song.

My list of loves is MUCH longer though - Oh Holy Night is one of my favorites too. I love Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses, All I Want For Christmas, Carol of the Bells, and anything Harry Connick Jr for Christmas. His Ave Maria will bring your to your knees!

    1. Jennifer,
I don't hear Jingle Bells much, but like it. Harry, jr brings me to my knees when he sings anything. I don't like medleys either. I have never heard of Christmas Wrapping, but will find it. Thanks.

  3. I loathe "Jingle Bells," "Sleigh Ride," and "Santa Got Run Over by a Reindeer." I also dislike "Frosty the Snowman," and "Santa Claus is coming to Town." I find those songs just disgusting. They assault my ears, and I do not allow them in my house.
Generally speaking, I love most Christmas carols, with "Carol of the Drum" being an exception. (What was she thinking?) I love everything on Jethro Tull's Christmas album, like John Lennon's "So This is Christmas" and can forgive Tom Petty for "It's Christmastime Again." Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmastime" is o.k., once or twice. Typically, I don't like secular Christmas music because it's just bad music, but that Jethro Tull album is AMAZING, and I may have to listen to "Ring out Solstice Bells" a few times today. And, actually, the lyrics are not very secular. Give it a listen.

    1. Anything by any of the Beatles is wonderful. Of the first four songs, I think three of them are wonderful for children, and children singing them around the house or in the car is music to my ears. Now, I have to listen to the one about solstice bells. Thanks, I will.

    2. Meg B.
I listened to solstice bells. No, it is not secular at all, just pagan. Loved it!

    3. Listen to the rest of the songs on that album. My favorite is "Birthday Card for Christmas."

    4. Ack. Meant to say "Actually, the lyrics on all the songsof the album are not very secular." I didn't mean to refer to "Ring out Solstice Bells." Me and my antecedents! In anly case, "Another Christmas Song" never fails tobring tears to my eyes.

      Got it. I understand. Thanks.

  4. I like most Christmas music except when the artist takes liberties with the music or tempo. I can't remember who sang Silent Night with crescendos - not good. My Dad disliked Eartha Kit and would turn the radio off when her Santa Baby came on, I love it.

    1. Bellen,
I agree about taking liberties! Daddy hated Elvis until I had him listen to Love Me Tender without telling him who it was. He still hated most of his body of work.

  5. Jingle Bell Rock is my favorite but I like most Christmas songs religious and secular and I am not even Christian.

    1. T'Pol,
I love it when that song comes on, any time, anywhere. It is a happy time of the year. People here are of varying degrees of belief, and many love this song. I don't think it takes anything away from the religious. Thanks.

  6. A local station here plays nothing but Christmas carols from Thanksgiving to New Years. It seems every time I first turn the radio on they are playing Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer and I am SO SICK of that song heehee. I like most Christmas songs but for modern I LOVE 'All I Want for Christmas is You' by Lisa Layne and the Valiants. No Mariah Carey. Today I'm buying my groceries- I'll go before 8 when the stores open and then plan on having a relaxing Friday afternoon and the next 3 days. I'll probably do a little paperwork but hopefully won't get many phone calls.

    1. NAN,
I love Rudolph, but have not heard it too many times, yet. I don't think I have heard anything but Mariah Carey for that song, but I do love it. Going early to the grocery is wise. It's a madhouse the rest of the day. I had to go to WM twice this week for meds and I could barely move in there. I hope you can relax. Thank you.

    2. You have to listen to Lisa Layne- You tube has it for free. It's 'countryish' which isn't my favorite genre but I just love that Christmas song!

  7. I love all my Celtic Christmas music. It is just so beautiful and I even enjoy the songs that are my least favorite. I do have a few CD's of Celtic non Christmas that I play all year long.

    1. tana50,
Celtic music is beautiful. Are these our traditional Christmas songs done in Celtic style or entirely different songs?
