I spent about $65. However, much of the amount spent is for stock-up items. I plan for the chunk cheese to last about two months, even longer for the hot dogs.
Hopefully, the Publix grated Parmesan will be tolerable if not good. The last time I bought a store brand of grated Parmesan cheese in a shaker was about 25 years ago. I could not abide it, so I went back to Kraft.
Two stores had OM hotdogs on sale for $.99. One of those stores had four different varieties, so I chose the bun length. Why not?
I regret the niblets...almost. The sardines were calling to me! I have not found my favorite brand in years--Possum.
The celery was cheaper than WM. I bought potatoes this past week and looked in a bag in the kitchen and have about 3 lbs. This is as good a time as any to make potato salad.
I shopped in four stores. Three had electric carts. Exbf drove me to carts at Aldi and picked me up there, so I did not have to trek to the car with a cart and then back to carts and then to car. These things really help me to conserve my ability to walk without so much pain..
You got a lot of food for your $65....
ReplyDeleteHave you tried the Walmart brand cheese. They sell it in 2 lb. blocks and it is by far cheaper than any other brand/size I have seen. Daughter bought some in June.
slugmama,
DeleteThanks. I could have gotten the buns cheaper, but I was shopping the Monday before the 4th, so I felt lucky to find buns anywhere. I don't buy any food that is Walmart brand. They source from China. There is no way I can cut a 2lb chunk of cheese. Well, then I could not use my hands for days without pain. Plus, I might cut myself. I did get it on good information that Ragu is same as Great Value spaghetti. Ragu is $1.77 and GV is $1.50. That is in the jar.
Cheese is on my list to purchase as I'm just about out. I prefer European or Canadian cheeses - Kraft cheese isn't something that I buy. These cheeses are more expensive but worth it - even if I end up buying less.
ReplyDeleteI had my first hotdog of the Summer from a street vendor last Friday - it was delicious - but not something that I eat often - but I could be tempted if I find some on sale in the next week or so.
I keep a good supply of sardines in the pantry, along with lots of canned tuna and salmon as it goes on sale - always great for a quick Summer meal.
I'll be able hit the No Frills supermarket tomorrow while out on other errands and then Wednesday morning I'm off to a social club meeting and there is a more upscale supermarket right next door to the meeting hall which I'll check out afterwards. Mostly looking for fresh produce.
Margie,
ReplyDeleteI do have and eat other cheese but do love Kraft Medium. Manchengo Is in refrigerator.I never find sardines on sale like I do tuna and salmon.
I like sardines too! My dad and I used to eat them on a saltine cracker when I was a kid- I was the only one of us 6 kids who liked them LOL. Dad also would eat canned spinach UGH but nope, I couldn't handle that. I never had fresh spinach until I married and bought it myself! I love cheese but try to avoid it because the fat. Today I'm having lobster YES! I had 2 tiny tails in the freezer from Christmas- I mean probably 2 bites in each- and since I'm cleaning out the freezers, it's lobster tonight.
ReplyDeleteNan,
DeleteDaddy and I ate sardines and saltines! I was the only one of five who would eat sardines. I always had fresh turnip greens until I bought canned ones myself. The secret to good greens is to buy the ones that are not seasoned. Mine have only water, maybe salt. I do prepare from fresh, but not anymore. Enjoy your lobster tails!
I understand you getting as close as possible to the electric carts. I drive as close I can to the place I want to go because every bit of energy conserved will help later in the day
ReplyDeletekylie,
ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!
Able-bodied people point out it is not very far. When I mention back problems, invariably I am told to pray. That removes any responsibility for even compassion, much less help, from them.
not far for them can be a bloody long way for me. I have places to go but i'll come back and tell you a wee story about relative distance....
ReplyDeleteJust put the story on this post. I cannot wait to hear.
DeleteI have a friend I met many years ago when I could pass for able bodied, she is a good friend and I mean no disrespect but this kind of thing drives me nuts.
ReplyDeleteSo, she moved away and I still see her but only a couple of times a year and usually just for coffee where the activity level is very minimal so she hasn't really been aware of my declining abilities.
Anyways, last year she was coming to Sydney and wanted to catch up, she was staying two nights in the city and two at Olympic park. I said I can't go to the city on public transport because it's just too hard, she said she would be just down from the train station but what does "just down" mean? I told her I really don't walk these days, just drive to the place I'm going and go inside and sit down if possible.
I said I'll come to Olympic park, thinking the hotel there would have a car park and I can just park there and go see her in her room or maybe a hotel bar. Now, Olympic park was designed as pedestrian precinct and cars can drive through but there is no parking on the street. So I get there and park close by and meet my friend in the foyer. It's a budget hotel with a communal kitchen and some cheap tables in the foyer but it was quiet and would have been an ok place for a chat but she wants me to walk up to Mc Donalds (remembering I've told her I don't really walk these days)
Mc Donalds is a full block away, plus some and it's slightly up hill. I can walk up hill but struggle on the down. So i look up the hill and say i think it's too far for me and she says it's only a block.
I know a block isn't much for most people and she's a farmer so she walks a lot but I've already told her three times in different ways that I don't want to walk and she's still saying it's not far.
At that point I didn't want to fuss so I agreed to walk and I managed it a bit more easily than I expected but very slow but really, it wasn't like we were going somewhere special, A coffee from the vending machine and a chat in the hotel foyer would have had about the same ambience but we walked to Mc Donalds anyway and she pities me so I not only have to make the effort of walking but I am pitied all the way there. Gah
The terms "only a block" and "not far" are so annoying. The terms grate my nerves. I get this even from nurses all the time. Some doctors, too, but usually they have not seen me walk or struggle to walk. Do not pity me; help me by not demanding I do the thing in the first place. That must have spoiled the experience. It would for me. I would guess she will never again suggest meeting you. It would be too hard on her to watch your discomfort.
