Seafood Headache?

As I entered Publix on Tuesday, I was hit with the stench of seafood. Raw seafood...ugh...then a massive headache gripped my head. That lasted for quite a while, most of the day, in fact.

I have tasted shrimp, calamari, crab, lobster, and many other seafood dishes and cared for none of them. I refuse to try oysters! I allowed my father to feed oysters to my younger daughter, but I had to leave the kitchen. The sight and smell were overwhelming.

My father loved to feed my babies. He would get a child dressed in Sunday clothes and feed the child with no bib. After years of my loudly complaining to him, he finally would tell me to get the kid undressed so he could feed the baby. A loved the oysters.

Considering my aversion to seafood and the horrid headache, I now wonder if I have an allergy to seafood. That will be a question for my allergist when I visit him next month.

But, in the meantime, does a seafood allergy manifest itself in a headache from the smell of seafood?

Okay, as soon as I hit "PUBLISH," I called my allergist. "Yes, indeed it can." So, I am being tested for seafood next appointment.

Do you have a seafood allergy that presents as a headache?

  1. No seafood allergy here. I like most seafood, but refuse to try oysters LOL. Crab legs are my absolute favorite food. We had salmon at my DD's when I visited, which was very good, too. Sorry you got such a headache. I'm sure it was all too much of it to be exposed to at one time.

    1. One,
Thanks. Whatever it was, I was just overpowered by the instantaneous headache.

  2. An instant headache is often my warning sign that I have been exposed to things which don't agree with me. Many insect sprays will trigger it. No foods yet.

    1. EC,
I am going to pay attention when I enter Publix when I go between now and allergist appointment. When I go in front of the seafood counter, I often feel dizzy and nauseous. I thought it was just because I feel so repelled by the smell, sort of like getting near a dead animal.

  3. I have no seafood allergies, but Son3 is very allergic to shellfish, which he hates because he loves the taste. After the last very severe reaction (anaphylaxis) he will not touch it, but the smell of it and being around it does not bother him.

  4. Anne,
I don't know if this is seafood or shellfish. So far, I have eaten tuna and salmon without incidence. However, adults often develop allergies to seafood and shellfish in adulthood. In the meantime, I will not eat any salmon or tuna and see if the same headache comes back after going into Publix. I am glad he received treatment and can avoid shellfish. That would be scary.

  5. My son does - also swollen lips and eyes. Just had him tested and he's allergic to almost all fish.

    1. obscure,
I have found that things I didn't like when I was a child are things I am allergic to. I don't think testing was an option back then. Good that he was tested rather than suffer.
