I was struck by the irony of the pilgrim type, no longer cool/popular/relevant in our time, thinking that he was relevant when the forest man was not. Both, unfortunately, are not cool or relevant or popular. In other words, the pilgrim type and the forest man are neither current.

Could be. To me he is from the time of pagans. I was thinking green man, but not quite right. See the corn, maybe a time of sacrifices, on his head? Or, I could be wrong. Thanks.
Coolness doesn't enter my equation. So yes, sometimes I get sad - but not about that.
