The title was something like that. I was horrified. Since I have been ill with the flu and other maladies for the last month, I have exclusivity eaten these things! I had no liquor or fish/seafood. But, I did have cheese sandwiches and mac and cheese, plus milk and yogurt. All dairy is forbidden on this LIST.
Then, there is another list at 13 Foods to Eat When You Are Sick.
This list is sort of contradictory with some foods included on both lists.
Thoughts? Do you agree? What foods do you eat when ill or avoid when ill?
I think a lot of the DO's and DON'Ts is just common sense. When you have flu or a bad cold you are tired, weak and lethargic. The last thing anyone would want to eat is a heavy, high fat meal. Dairy can also upset an already upset stomach and can cause a bit of mucous build up so that's why most people avoid it when ill.
ReplyDeleteLots of fluids to avoid dehydration - plain foods like rice, lentils, and toast that doesn't upset your stomach and is easy to digest until you are recovered - and coconut milk or gatorade to replace electrolytes that can be lost due to vomiting or the runs.
If what you are eating isn't upsetting you then I wouldn't worry about it - everyone is different and our bodies handle things differently so eat what appeals - just keep up your fluids - that's probably the most important thing.
Margie,
DeleteDid you notice some things were on both lists? Gravy or anything greasy seems to make me feel better. Gatorade and coconut milk are nasty, so I won't drink those. I do drink lots of water all the time.
I'm not fond of either of those drinks myself - so - I looked up some easy and natural replacements and this link seems to offer the easiest and most sensible advice. But really, chicken soup & V8 or tomato juice for the salt and any other fruit juice seems to work just fine. If you were in a serious situation and worried then keeping a few bottles of Pedialyte on hand might be a good idea.

Margie,
DeleteThanks. I have thought about getting Pedialyte.
I would agree. Everybody (and every body) is different. Eat what works for you - and keep up the fluids.
ReplyDeleteEC,
DeleteOne day, I was so ill I could not get to the kitchen, so I had no fluids for about eight hours.
I eat whatever I want- I even treat myself to some ice cream when I am sick. I love it but it's a red light food for me so I rarely buy it unless it's the $$ Halo. I rarely get sick- maybe a cold every 3 or 4 years- but when I do have one, I do try to drink a lot of water. I'm not one for juices or tea so water is my drink of choice. I attribute my good immune system to being the oldest of 6 who were spread out over 20 years and Mom to 3 also spread out over 16 years plus I voluntered at a pre-school and taught Sunday school for years. I've been exposed to a lot of viruses over the years including now with my clients I have to visit monthly whether they are ill or not.
ReplyDeleteNan,
DeleteIf it were a case of being oldest of many and a mother, one who was always at school, and worked in schools for many years, I should not be ill. My allergies, many allergies, is usually the beginning of my illnesses. I inherited these allergies from my father's family. I have seen the Halo, but do not know what is good about it. I will have to investigate this.
It's not being the oldest- it's the age span. I caught some colds from the younger kids and now am immune to those germs- same with my kids in different decades. No allergies in the family that I have ever heard of except some seasonal ones. The Halo is $$ and tastes differently than premium ice cream but it is low calorie and IMO decent. I have bought a few times when it was BOGO at Publix or Winn dixie.
DeleteI avoid dairy as it seems to be mucus forming for me. I drink plenty of fluids, including garlic laden hot chicken broth. Otherwise it's whatever I want and can tolerate - and that can change from day to day.
ReplyDeleteBellen,
DeleteAvoiding dairy is a good idea when ill. I never thought of adding garlic to chicken broth. I drink that when ill. Thanks.
I always eat chicken soup when I am sick. Tea is a help too. I hope you feel better soon.
ReplyDeleteAD,
DeleteChicken broth is what I usually want, but not this time.
Despite all you may read and try, there really isn't any miracle food or vitamins to help or hinder a cold/flu. One just has to wait it out and not do foolishness.
