Recipe: Crockpot Bread Pudding

7 qt. crockpot of bread pudding

Bread pudding was free today, okay, almost free. I had a hankering for bread pudding like my mother made. I succeeded even though I made up the recipe.

Cost
bread--free
eggs--donated by my hens
sugar--$0.25/lb--not sure
vanilla--not sure
margarine--about $0.40

This cost less than $1 for me. Use stale bread. You can just stick it in the freezer until you have enough. You may not have egg machines in the yard or find sugar for the price I did.

Last year, I had a sample of bread pudding at the grocery. It was not my mother's bread pudding with the raisins, cinnamon, and nuts. I prefer my mother's recipe.

Recipe
6 eggs
6 cups milk
3/4 cup sugar
1 stick margarine or butter
2 T vanilla

I broke bread into irregular pieces, about two gallons. The bread was not stale. I should have put it in a warm oven to dry it, but it worked just fine.

If you put this in a crockpot, melt the margarine or butter first. It needs to be melted before the bread goes in. I had to fish out the pats of butter to melt in the microwave.  Beat eggs and mix with sugar, butter, and milk. Use powdered milk, canned evaporated milk, or any milk you have on hand, whatever you drink.

Add the bread and shove it down. It needs to be soaked with milk but some milky places are necessary for it to be really soft to eat.

This stayed in the crockpot for about four hours. Dip into it to see if it is getting firm all the way down. Turn the crockpot to low and let it sit for another hour. Or, dip it up. It will be more or less firm depending on your crockpot and the dryness of the bread and how much bread you add.

This is a very mild dessert, not very sweet at all. Let me know if you try this recipe and how you like it. I am quite sure I will not make this soon since it is not conducive to weight loss. However, when my mother made much less than I did and gave it to five little children, it did not adversely affect our weight!

By the way, if you cook this in the oven, put it in casseroles and sit in a pan of water to cook for about an hour at 350  F. It is done when a knife comes out clean.

No proofing once again.

Your turn
Do you like bread pudding? Have you ever had bread pudding? Have you ever had biscuit pudding? Do you make it like this? Have you ever made bread pudding? In the crockpot? Do you like it?

  1. Yes, have had and have made bread pudding. The recipe is the same as yours - my mother's recipe too. She served hers with a lemon sauce, I preferred chocolate. Have also made chocolate bread pudding by adding cocoa powder to the milk mixture. Never made it the crockpot always the oven while something else was baking.

My MIL used to make it with leftover pastries from the restaurant where she worked, cinnamon rolls, danish, etc. Added no sugar - boy was that delicious.

    1. Bellren,
I cannot find my recipe from Mama. I just made this up and was saying the finished product was Mama's recipe. I am glad you concur that is a recipe you recognize. Now, chocolate bread pudding would be wonderful. That will be great!

Oh, my gosh. Pastries? I am drooling. I can see it would not need sugar. Maybe I will make that and take it somewhere people can help me eat it. Thanks for that idea.

  2. I love bread pudding but I have not had biscuit pudding. Is that a re-do of old biscuits?

    1. Coffeypot,
Years ago, a guy asked me if I had ever made biscuit pudding when I mentioned bread pudding. I guess it is a redo, but I am still puzzled as to exactly what it is.

    2. Biscuit pudding, according to a Google search, is a southern version of bread pudding - made with biscuits instead of bread. Guess it's because in the South biscuits used to be the 'bread' made daily. Wonder if you could use cornbread or would that just end up like stuffing.

  5. I haven't had bread pudding in years. Or rice pudding. I loved both of them, and as our weather cools down I will give them some thought. Using the crock pot? Genius. I had never thought of it, and it would work really well for both recipes. Thank you.

    1. EC,
I suppose it has been 20 years since I have made either. I may wait until cooler weather to make rice pudding. Thanks. The steaminess of the crockpot environment sort of made me sure this would work.

  7. I like to take raisin bread and rip it into the egg/milk mixture with vanilla and sugar. Then I put it into a baking dish and put it in the fridge. The next morning, at 350 degrees, we have breakfast! Well.....JOE has breakfast. I can't control my diabetes now, no matter how large a shot I take. So while he eats, I sit in the other room grumbling.

    1. Oh, I am sorry about the diabetes. Maybe he should eat like you so he won't chance getting diabetes. Raisin bread sounds really good.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
