Free Chicken Food

free chicken food

Tonight was the church dinner where I got scraps (aka free chicken food) several years ago. For a while they had only tvp hamburgers, tvp chicken patties, and hot dogs, rotated and nasty. Everything was over-cooked and almost cold. We got store-bought cookies and a tiny bag of chips. If I want junk without nutrients, I will eat chocolate. Actually, the chips and cookies were pretty good. So I and most of the people quit attending. Some of us told them why since they wanted to know!

For the last month, the food has been better, but the scraps were sort of nothing. People ate all the chili and all the spaghetti and lasagna. I would not give chili to my hens. White bread scraps were abundant, but I won't give those to my hens, either. Tonight was the perfect night for my chickens. The vegetables, especially, made me happy on behalf of Patsy Cline and Thelma. Okay, and myself.

We had baked chicken and cheese; baked new potatoes, carrots, yellow squash, zucchini, onions; warmed corn from a can; dinner rolls from store. The baked vegetables were delicious. Oh, then I had pecan pie. So, I ate well and so will my hens. I now have three days worth of food scraps for them.

Next week, after daylight saving time starts, I will get back home in time to feed them scraps from the church meal for their dinner.

Thursday night, I will be out of town, so my friend Tony who lives around the block will feed them for me Friday morning. A quart of these scraps should keep them happy until I return in the late afternoon.

The Ziploc storage bag was bought when it was reduced after Christmas and with a coupon.

Your turn

    1. Lena,
It was dark when I came home, so they were in bed. Tomorrow afternoon, they will get some of this food. Next Wednesday, due to DST, they will be awake to eat leftovers.

  3. I love it when chickens turn food waste into good fertilizer!

  4. Better food for the people means a little less for the chickens. I'm glad your meal at the church improved.

    Love,

    1. Actually, there were no leftovers from hotdogs and potato chips. People gobbled them down. From roasted vegetables, there were lots of leftovers from kids and adults. Heck, I had two plates! There were no leftovers from me.

I had quit going to the dinner until someone informed me that were a better quality meal from now on.

  5. Ahhh, to think. Society has gone from doggy bags to chicken bags. I can hear it now at the end of a restaurant meal.

    1. Mike,
The waiters are shocked when I say food is for my chickens. Yes, I do get a chickie bag.

  6. Your church meal sounds like one my extremely picky nephews would have enjoyed! They both love chicken and corn.

    1. Jesshalinda,
I could eat the chicken and roasted vegetables every week. Children seemed to like the chicken and corn.

  7. How many churches and other organizations in your area offer meals? How often? All free? Any meals you especially look forward to?

    1. My MIL's church has free meals every Holiday and once a few other times called, family night. Pot luck. Bring something, or not.

    2. One church has a meal every week. Another has a lunch once each month with musicians. Another has one every Sunday night, but I think people have to listen to a sermon.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
