WHO did WHAT? WHERE? Handcuffed?

My antenna is sort of half put up, last time with the plastic zip ties, you know--the ones that can be used as handcuffs. My reception has been a bit off, so I looked up and noticed that the figure-8 antenna bought from Walmart was leaning outwards. I thought that nothing good could come from this leaning antenna. However, I just figured having my antenna completely fall off was the worst that could happen. No, it is worse than that.

I pass right by this every time I go to the clothesline or chicken pen. On another day for some reason, I saw something out of place from the corner of my eye and glanced upward. There in the v between post and antenna where it leans outward was a bird's nest. I don't know if there are eggs or not since I cannot see in the nest and have seen no sign of the bird. The nest is messy. Someone should have climbed a ladder and taken the nest down if there were no eggs. It may be too late.

However, signs say there are no eggs yet. No bird has been spotted on the nest. No bird is squawking at me. No bird is dive-bombing me. No bird is trying to draw me away. I say there are no eggs! YET!

The antenna is on a  metal/steel pole that holds up the corner of the house which is a porch over the entrance to the basement. The antenna has a clear view of the sky for reception and with a porch roof over it, it must be the perfect place for a nest. Considering how many trees are around my house, surely there must be sites as good or better to raise birds. I hope this bird does not dive-bomb me.

Oh, obviously these zip ties can be stretched, so if you are handcuffed with these zip ties, just keep pressure on them in order to free yourself. Or, try one of these methods. There are other sites and maybe other methods, but I picked this site at random.

Your turn
Where has a bird built a nest that is not convenient to you and your mobility or activities? Have you ever had a bird dive-bomb you if you get too close at home or at work?

  1. I have wrens who build nests close to the house (Like in a wreath on the front door, or on the blades of the ceiling fan on the porch) Today I knocked one down (eggless nest) on the living room window at Mom's. They are friendly little critters.

  2. Anne,
Every winter, tiny birds, wrens maybe, perch in the fake greenery wreath I put on my door. Therefore, every time I open the door to go in or out. Once a caterer delivery guy brought food for a party and I made the poor kid help get it out of the house. The ceiling fan would not be a good place to raise a family. Interesting!

As sick as I am, I suppose tomorrow I should get a rake an get the next down after watching for a mother bird.

    1. Every time the door opens, a bird comes in. I have no idea why I just quit that thought mid-sentence.

  3. Morning doves were building nests over the side garage door so hubby put up a strip of wood with protruding nails, the common fix in our area. Did NOT work, built a nest over it. They also built a nest on top of a succulent I had in a pot on a 4-pot planter hanging on the wall outside the front entrance. Didn't catch that one in time so had to let the eggs hatch. You know how baby birds are so cute - not mourning doves, only a baby a mother could love. We now patrol every other day to remove any sign of a nest near the house.

We also had a 3 baby bunnies in a planter right next to the front door - 2 years in a row. Last year I changed the planting from flowers to rosemary bushes - no more rabbits. Guess they don't like the fragrance.

  4. Bellen,
My pair of doves built in the scuppernong arbor, 18x9 feet. They came for years. I am glad they did not build over a door. You definitely have some determined doves. I have a hanging pot I better check. There are no flowers in it, since I am flat in bed, ill. Not cute, huh? lol I suppose I will at least patrol or have someone else check!

Now, the bunnies sound sweet, but I am surprised they survived cats. Maybe rosemary would deter other pests? It does sound sweet, having them there to watch. Thanks for both those stories. I will stay on my toes.

    1. Oh, P.S. I love this post about your new bird nest problem. Maybe I shouldn't be enjoying it quite so much. But, you must admit, a cute problem. Don't hurt yourself getting rid of the nest.

    2. tana50,
I do enjoy all the bird problems, too. I doubt I could actually hold a broom or rake over my head! And, I won't get on a ladder. So, I am safe. Thanks for comments.

  6. Birds like to make their nests in the outside speakers which is a nuisance as we feel sheepish to turn on the music lest the babies are friend on Elvis P.

    1. Ur-spo,
Maybe you should play music and annoy Mama before she decides it is a good location. Could you put some mesh over the speakers while it is next making season? Even a hairnet type temporary spring thingie. You could play Lullabye in Birdland for the babies.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
