Poor Chicks

They all succumbed to four hours with NO heat. I took the faulty lamp back to the store and told the guys all the chicks died due to three bulbs burning out and leaving my chicks in the cold. I was flabbergasted when he said I probably got bad bulbs. Can you believe that? I told him that the bulbs were 130 and not 120 and different brands and boxes, and I had never had bulbs blow so fast, that it WAS the faulty lamp. My tone of voice with the last declaration shut him right down.

I did get another lamp because I am not giving up this spring. Oh, the switch was hard to keep it on when I first turned it on. I forgot to tell him that. Next time, I will use the table lamp that has always worked to keep them warm, the lamp with two bulbs, along with the heat lamp!

They had a really good setup. None got pasty butt. Water and food were always there in containers taped to the bottom of their box. Chicks manage to spill everything. Or, they get caught in the little feeders and scream for their lives. I could always tell when they were caught in feeders made just for chicks!

J was sad when she didn't hear them today and refused to go near them. I have already picked out names for three hens. I need one more name and hope to have four hens. We both wanted to be outside today. I explained to her how much fun it was to sit and watch chickens pecking and scratching.

We had one chore to run, well, two chores. One of the chores was getting me another half gallon of a2milk. Then, I could come home and make scrambled eggs. I love just a glass of milk with scrambled eggs. The rest of the time from 9-4, she worked and I wore myself out just having to be up. I did make in the crock pot a dump cake or cuppa cake, whichever you call it.

My one-hour nap was disturbed by call from exbf. But, I did want him to call. Now, I have to go eat dinner. A salad and ham it is.

Your turn
How did you enjoy the warm, spring day? Isn't it sad when little things die, especially through no fault of your own? I mean I could beat myself up if I had been negligent. Have you ever made a dump cake or cuppa cake in the crock pot.

  1. I have never made any desserts in the crock pot. No idea why I never tried it either!

    1. Anne,
There is a cake from the Cake Doctor cookbook and maybe on the internet that is wonderful It is made with a chocolate cake mix and a can of cherries. It is wonderful! Maybe this cake was not from Cake Doctor, but I bet you could find it on the internet.

    2. Anne,
      NOT in the crockpot.

Or do a search for "cherry" on my blog. That might be easier. There are several cherry posts. I believe this is the second post.

  2. Those poor chicks. I would have been ballistic with rage. And would also have felt guilty.

    1. EC,
I was furious. However, the guy saying I had bad bulbs almost sent me over the edge. Yes, I do feel guilty. This was the best setup ever, so I did the best anyone could.

  3. So very sorry about losing your chicks. I am glad you took that heat lamp back to the store. Better luck with the next batch of chicks. We still are under the clouds (I'm near Seattle, so what else is new?) and we are still very chilly. Can't wait till we get a sunny day where I can open a few windows and spend some time sitting out on the porch and also pulling a few weeds. Have a blessed Easter.

    1. tana50,
I have to have the sun. Yes, I have heard about Seattle. I love the sun whether I am indoors or out. I have huge windows, so I benefit greatly. Happy Easter.

  4. That's sad about the chicks. We had a cat that had 5 kittens once and one died within a week- we cried and cried! I'm particular about my goodies- no box mixes and only from scratch and a crockpot cake does not appeal to me. Mom used to make a dump cake I did not like at all. Someone did give me a recipe for a cupcake in a mug- just for when one would be craving something sweet. I also saw where Ben and Jerry's are selling ice cream by the slice.

    1. Nan,
Only lately have I used boxed mixes. I suppose I will eat anything that is chocolate...lol. I wish we had a B&Js here. I would have cried if a kitten died, too. That is sad. These were sturdy little chicks until they were without heat for so long--three times in one day.

  5. Those poor chicks!

I mostly grew up on boxed cake mixes, my parents were always working and didn't have time to do optional things like baking so I have a certain fondness for them but I haven't ever tried a dump cake or cupcake in a cup. It's awfully tempting on those days when you need a bite of sweetness.

Thanks for coming by to share your memories of your kids, it was lovely.

  6. How sad, probably that many thought just chickens. But you certainly did your best and should have had a happy outcome.
Now desserts? Not picky, box cakes are fine. Have not tried my slow cooker but I think it would be wonderful. I had someone's dump cake and it had a dry spot. Is that normal?

  7. Awww, poor things. Well at least you know you did the best for them, it was just the stupid people at the store or manufacturer that didn't hold up their end. Ugh.

I do hope you'll try again! Hang in there!

  8. Seeing the death of chickens must be a hard thing to experience, despite the experience.

    1. Urspo,
It's hard. The other chicks just walk on the dead one until it is only about 1/4 inch thick. One day, two chicks were standing on a dead one.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
