Accidental Lunch

About 4:30 mm or so, I was awake for good on Tuesday. But, since I went to bed at 5 pm or so on Monday evening I had about 10 hours sleep. I kept waking up to phone calls and going right back to sleep. My first breakfast was some of a goat cheese log with blueberries embedded in it and water.  My second breakfast was banana, milk, and chicken.

My doctor's appointment ended earlier than usual. On the way home, I stopped for some information and continued on my way. As I turned toward town, there was a sign, "Free Lunch on Tuesday." My car drove itself right in without consulting me.

Many church members and a few poor people attended. It seems churches for a space of time will have lunches or dinners for their members and anyone who wishes to come and eat. Good deal.

I had the best lunch and brought home another for tonight: turkey breast, dressing, green beans, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, a roll, iced tea, and choice of dessert. Tonight will be a repeat. I love free food. I love delicious free food even better.

Lettuce was $0.39/head last week, and I bought tomatoes at the market, so a salad and grapes will be my snack later tonight.

Three churches in this town have a free lunch once each month, all for the community and not just the poor. The food is delicious. If I lived in a larger town...okay, just dreaming of lunches I did not have to cook or clean up afterwards, not to mention being free.

Your turn
Do churches in your town ever serve lunches free for the community? Would you be there with bells on?

  1. I know of no churches that do this.
Then again I live in AZ, a red state, where it is generally believed poor people are poor because of their laziness or wicked ways and feeding them just supports their vices.

    1. Ur-spo,
I live in a red state and not far from Anne below. These are not for the poor exclusively. They are for anyone and mostly attended by church members. Most people believe the same things about the poor here. That is unfortunate.

  2. I don't know of any churches around that host community meals, but I know a ton of them that offer meals/housing/showers/transportation to people with needs. Like you I live in a red state but I find people here pretty generous.

    1. Anne,
I know Birmingham is pretty helpful to people with needs. However, I thought maybe there were a few churches that had meals for their members and community with and without needs.

I could certainly live without these meals, but it IS someplace to go and eat.

    1. Anne,
This is a small place. I live near one and pass it every day and just passed by the other today. There is supposed to be a third.

  4. No lunches here but we have a program that serves mainly the homeless a few nights a week. I've helped serve. It's outdoors and the food is definitely nothing special but they also have fruit and bottled water. My old church had quite a few potlucks with great food after Sunday services.I have heard that our hospital has a great cafeteria with reasonable prices and that a lot of seniors eat there.

    1. Nan,
As far as I know, there is no program like that here. Our hospital before it moved had judges, lawyers bragging about how great it was. Business owners and retired folk of means talked about the food and the great bargain. I never got around to eating there.

  5. We have a mission that serves lunch. We eat there on occasion because my sister-in-law works there. We make a donation. The food is hit or miss. Sometimes the leftovers of fancy catering, sometimes hot dogs. We also give them several turkeys for their food basket. The local Giant eagle gives them day old bread and each person takes one loaf free. Do you have this store chain? I wish all stores did that.

    1. carol,
These are not missions and the food is always purchased and fresh. One church had gas grills installed in their new brick building on the outside, of course. In the summer they grill chicken...yum. There are no missions in this town. At the senior center on Wednesday, each person can get a free loaf of bread. Years ago, I did get a loaf when I had business there. But, I have not been there in years. No, we don't have that store chain, but other stores give bread to churches to hand out.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
