Dying Laptop and Other Stuff

So, I have not been on the laptop much because it is dying by bits and pieces. The cord is frayed, causing me to type one-handed most of the time so I can . Then, the battery started dying, so I fretted. Finally, now I have taken the battery out. It stressed me to see the capacity of the battery being drained and hopeless because I cannot revive it. So, I just took out the battery. I was shocked at the ease of that operation. I was looking at screws on the back and worrying about being grounded or not. I know just enough to stay out of trouble. Obviously, I don't know enough.

Maggie May has given me an egg each day I have not reported. Patsy Cline needs to step up and start contributing. Thelma gets a pass since she is six years old.  I can see everything about her slowing down. Plus, I am still dreaming every day.

It is 23 degrees out right now. I just came in and have not turned on the heater. The hens need hot water right now. Exbf will put together the water heater for them. I think the temperature will be below freezing for the next 48 hours. AND, the wind is blowing something fierce. So, the hens and I will have a long 48 hours to try to keep body and soul together and the pipes from freezing.  He will probably freeze putting the heater together tomorrow, so I may try a new configuration.

Yesterday, I put on seven boneless, skinless chicken breasts and they are in the refrigerator. Another seven are ready to refrigerate. The last package will go in later this evening. I am using the smaller 3.5 qt. Crockpot for which I paid $3 at a yard sale. I may make some chicken soup for exbf. And pasta salad for me. I am not crazy about my own chicken soup and he does not like meat submerged in pasta salad. Plus, he would rather have something hot on a day like tomorrow will be--single digits.

The church dinner is tonight, so that will be  a cold trek outdoors. but Fred will be there with some sort of news. I'm out of here. So, I went there and they cancelled it because it is cold. ???? It is not that cold. It was 25 F.

Right now, it is 13 F ourtside, 40 F in the house on the warmest wall, an inside wall. Well, it may be lower than 40, but that is as low as the thermostat goes. The thermostat remains but the furnace does not work. ugh

You turn
How cold is it where you are, and generally where are you located?

  5. I am about like you are tonight, but our heater is working and though we don't have it set high it is substantially warmer than outside. Plus I learned a long time ago from some Norwegians, there is no such thing as too cold, one must simply dress for it. It is amazing how comfortable I am wearing several layers.

    1. I have on a tshirt, sweatshirt, coat, neck scarf, pants, sock, and leather shoes. I cannot put pants over pants, but I have a throw wrapped around my waist. I cannot feel my toes and my hands are freezing because I am putting dishes in dishwasher and things in bathroom. I have been in this house since 1974, and it is always cold in here, just frigid now. This WAS comfortable this afternoon...lol.

  6. You don't want to know about the weather here.

For a layer under your pants without too much bulk try panty hose or opaque tights. Unless you are wearing skinny jeans the tights are actually pretty comfortable and really do help to keep you warm.

When my daddy was older he would always ask that the blankets be sort of bunched up on top of him instead of lying out smooth. When you think of it it makes perfect sense. Like using a thermal weave blanket. All those air pockets act to trap body warmth. He said he learned in in the CCCs during the depression. He said you haven't been cold until you have spent a winter in Wyoming!

    1. I cannot wear panty hose or tights because I cannot stand them touching my knees. My covers were bunched last night...lol. We can learn from older people. Thanks for that blanket advice.

  7. You can order a new laptop cord very reasonably on ebay. I have had to do that numerous times. I also ordered a replacement battery for very little $ but it doesn't hold a charge for very long.

    1. Janet,
You don't need a battery if the laptop is plugged in. I got a new cord that keeps falling out, so need to return it. I sit where I can keep the laptop plugged in. I rarely remove it fom electricity.

  8. Thursday 8am in SW Florida - 44 with winds of 18mph and a Wind Chill advisory has been issued. Really, it's not that cold and the sun is out, weather will be like this thru tomorrow then back to normals of high 70s. We do not turn on the heat unless it is in the 40s daytime for 2 days.
I have on an undershirt, long-sleeved shirt, long pants, socks and sandals, and a scarf. Early this am & tonight I will wear fingerless gloves while on the computer or reading. While watching TV I'll use a blanket.
You might try wearing a hat indoors as people lose a lot of heat thru the head, tha's why babies wear hats or so I've been told.
A cup of hot liquid of your choice, hot soup or other hot food will help too.
The window next to my computer table lets air, cold or hot, in at the sill so I keep a folded towel there to keep out the air - seems to help but so would silicone grout, maybe some day.
Take care & try to keep warm.

    1. I do wear a hat or the hood to the heavy jacket I wear indoors. I just hate hot liquids. They make me sick. Jay Leno said he could not understand why people drank hot liquids. I have to have icy water to rinse my mouth, esophagus, and settle my stomach. My house is all drafts, it seems and no insulation.

  9. Yesterday's high was 10 degrees, wind chill in the negatives. Right now it's 8 degrees, "RealFeel" per my weather app says -14. Do you keep your home that temperature by choice or does your heater not work? I have never been comfortable with multiple layers of clothing, particularly when eating or working at the computer. I feel constricted.

    1. tlc,
That is cold, too. It is one space heater that I do not leave plugged in when I am gone or asleep. The furnace is in basement and not connected to gas. In the 80s it cost $400/month for gas and more for the blower run from electricity. It is not that I like all these layers. It is a matter of not freezing to death.

  10. Linda, we have temps in the 20s and I'm not ready for it. The good news is that it will apparently pass.

Last night, when the first blast hit us, I swear the wind blew right into my skull and froze my neurons.

  11. I'm so sorry about your heater. You aren't having very good luck. DO you have someone that you can stay with until it warms up?
Its 3 here with a windchill of -24. It isn't a fun day to try and go out. Tomorrow it is supposed to be 3 again.

  12. I have erased my comment twice, so I will write it again! Put a space heater in a small room, like the bathroom, and sit in there all day. I have tension rods on all my windows and sliders in the winter and hang clear shower curtains on them. If it gets really cold I hang the shower curtains on the kitchen doorways and keep that room warm, and I sit in there all day. And that is with the furnace working! Actually, that is where I stay all day anyway. I am a kitchen sitter. I hate to hear that your house may be colder than 40º. If you were my neighbor, you would be sitting in my house. Please take care of yourself.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
