Tuesday Free Lunch and Sugar in Catsup

Tueday's lunch was meat loaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, bread, and chocolate chip cookies. Of course, I drink unsweetened tea. Usually, I eat more cookies than I should. Today, I ate two. Yay me!

One kid, ten years old, was all over the place. He would not listen to his mother and on his feet continually. His mother is very ineffectual. I have been at other dinners and lunches where she acts as childish as he does. Three years ago, they were fighting over a glass of tea, a tug of war of sorts. So, this is ongoing, not a one-time event. I suppose they will be around for two more dinners...sigh.

Since I only slept two hours Monday night, I had a six-hour nap. Now, at almost midnight, I am tired, so hopefully I will sleep well Tuesday tonight.

A chicken is thawing in the refrigerator, ready for the crockpot tomorrow. I need a chicken sandwich! Tomorrow, I hope to get the Vidalia onions in the dehydrator. There is one bell pepper to dehydrate, too. Plus, ground beef is thawing so I can make meat loaf for exbf to take home. It is horrible to make a meatloaf and not be able to eat any of it....sigh.  Yes, cooking is on the schedule for tomorrow, maybe too much!

Every meatloaf I have ever made had catsup in it, maybe up to a cupful and then catsup on top. Sometimes, the extra catsup is the result of having added too much oats. The meatloaf is dry and stiff, so I add more catsup--not a smart move.

After considering how much sugar is in catsup, I made his last meatloaf with tomato sauce. I tasted one bite and it was fine. I told him about the lack of catsup so he could be aware if the taste was too different. He said it was fine. Great, because it is healthier. Beef, egg, tomato sauce, old fashioned oats, onions, bell pepper, salt and pepper is all I use.

It is now Wednesday, time for a new grocery ad. This last week, I did not open the paper with ads or go online. That is how bad I have felt. I wrote this post on Tuesday night and did not post. Sleep took me away. So, now I am back on track to sleep more at night and less during the day. Good!

Your turn
Do you ever put catsup in your meatloaf, or are you one of those people who just put it on top of the meatloaf? Do you ever get your days and nights mixed up? How hard is it to get yourself straight?

  1. Ketchup never even comes near my meatloaf. lolz The only tomato product is paste which I put on top of the meatloaf during the last 20 min. of cooking. That's what my mom used so I use it too. Why do you put ketchup or tomato anything IN a meatloaf?

    1. slugmama,
I don't know why! But, this is how I always did it. It is not catsup-y on top, just baked in. I must have gotten this from a cookbook in the 60s.

Moisture and flavor inside? I do put the oats in there, so something has to moisten it. I put very little salt and pepper plus bell pepper in the meatloaf. Do you use bell pepper in the meatloaf?

Since I put the catsup on top, smeared on the top, it has almost completely disappeared and is just more like a film. Maybe it is a Southern thing since the meatloaf at the free lunch had some tomato product on top and inside.

  2. I put beef broth in my meatloaf. I guess I should check the sugar and salt content! I never use catsup in or on mine. But I do use half hamburger and half ground pork. I love it that way.

    1. tana50,
I just cannot imagine meat loaf without tomato something. I have to eat just pork since I found out that I am allergic to beef.

  3. yes, my recipe calls for 1/3 c ketchup. I don't like it on top, but DH does add some to his plate. Glad you are getting caught back up on sleep.

    1. One,
Good, a catsup user! I would not want catsup on the meatloaf after it was cooked. It sort of goes away and thickens and goes in to the meatloaf. It is not like catsup from the bottle which would not appeal to me. Yes, catching up on sleep is a good feeling. I hate sleeping the day away.

    1. Anne,
Thank you! I think people assume my meatloaf is like French fries drenched in catsup.

  5. Hmm I have made it with ketchup and without- I like meat loaf no matter what but especially with mashed potatoes. When my kids were around, I'd often make a pizza meat loaf and add Italian seasonings and some cubed Mozarella cheese. They liked that a lot.Days and nights mixed up- well, its rare that I am not up before 5 AM and in bed before 9 PM. I love mornings and get a lot done. in fact, I just made dinner (chicken barbeque simmering on the stove and cole slaw in fridge)and am getting ready to walk for 25 minutes. I'm slowly increasing the time!

I never thought of a pizza meatloaf. I might try that for exbf. If I regularly got up at 5 am, I would for sure be in bed by 9 pm. There was a season in my life when I did get up by 5 or 6 and took a walk. Then, I took another walk at 9:30pm, watched the news and went to bed by 10:30. That was strange for me, thinking about what I was doing.

  6. Here in the Southwest ketchup is replaced with salsa, which comes in many forms and none with sugar, happily. I have not made meatloaf in decades; I remember Mother using ketchup too.

  7. Urspo,
Since I don't like salsa, I will travel with catsup. Really, I only like catsup on French fries and sometime blackeyed peas. I imagine salsa would be food in meatloaf.

    1. That is so funny I only eat catsup on those 3 things too! My cousin Dean, ate his peas with catsup and I picked up a taste for it when we were visiting Arkansas. You, Dean & I are the only ones that I have ever heard who do this.

    2. Janet,
We will have to have a meet-up. My brothers and sisters ate catsup on our blackeyed peas. Funny.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
