Kitty and Still Groggy and Pickle Making

As I opened the back door, there was a great commotion on the back porch and a streak of something, just motion. It was difficult to ascertain size or color, just a blur. So, I put my hand on bookcase on the porch and moved it a bit, just enough to get a reaction. A little yellow kitten ran off the porch and under the house.

This week, I can inquire if anyone has a cat with kittens. Most likely, this one is feral or stray. If so, it is destined to go to the animal shelter. Once before, the neighborhood was filled with cats that annoyed everyone! I managed to trap eight cats, one with kittens. My neighbor with five cats has all his altered, so I wonder.

Something got into the trash can I keep next to/outside the chicken pen. Now, I may have found the culprit or at least the baby of the culprit. Trash was all over the yard! The kitten could have gotten through the chain link fence. Maybe this is why I have not gotten an egg in two weeks!

I took a Benadryl at about 2 am and here and 3:30 pm, I am still groggy. For some reason, I have had swollen knots on my hands and fingers. Then, the veins on the back of one hand stood out so that I wondered what was happening. After two days of the knots and itching in other places on hands, I gave up and took the Benadryl.

Consequently, when the alarm went off at eight, I decided I needed sleep more than to go anywhere. At 11 am, I got in the car and drove to the food giveaway that is not income based, no means test.

It's not like I don't know the Benadryl makes me groggy for 24 hours! In my defense, I was desperate. So, today, I got the same thing in a cream. Within seconds of applying, the itching stopped and the little knots went away. The cause of this is has me bumfuzzled. I thought it was contact dermatitis, but have changed my mind about that theory.

In spite of being in this perpetual fog, I do have things to do. The main thing is slicing the glut of cucumbers given to me, adding to jar with apple cider vinegar, salt, pepper, and garlic. I will never touch them, but will give exbf these when he is here. I promised J a jar of them as cucumber is her favorite vegetable. I was looking at the packets to make pickles when I was at WM. Do those packets sold with the canning jars work? I even have pickling vinegar. It's foggy vinegar, so I suppose it is still okay. Anyone know? Anyone ever used pickling vinegar?

It's too hot to do so, but I need to remove odds and ends from the car so it does not get trashy again.

Your turn
Does Benadryl make you overly groggy? Have you made pickles with the packets sold near the canning jars?

  1. I use the liquid Benadryl so I can take less. It helps my allergies and doesnt make me so groggy. I didnt even know there was such a thing as pickling vinegar. I used those pickle packs of spices one year for dill pickles. They were too salty for us so I ended up throwing them out.

    1. Barbara,
I didn't know there was liquid Benadryl. The cream worked on my hands! I went to WM to buy the bread and butter pickle packet. After I read the ingredients, I decided I can add sugar and spices on my own. So, I saved $3 by leaving it there. Since the packet for dill is too salty, I won't ever buy any of it. thanks.

  2. Benadryl has the same effect on me; most antihistamines do that. Sometimes I have to chose between allergies and zombie.

    1. Ur-spo,
Zyrtec or Claritin works without noticeable grogginess. If I had to choose, I would choose zombie. I could not sleep for the itching and my scratching and drawing blood.

  3. Benadryl puts me into a coma. It is the main ingredient in many otc sleeping pills. I have good allergy results with fish oil and garlic capsules. I do not care f or dill pickles. I have a recipe for bread and butter pickles made in the microwave. But they are so cheap at Aldi, why bother. I use the brine for pickled beets and eggs.

    1. carol, I could feel the effects 24 hours after taking it. I need to hear more about this. Can you email me? These cucumbers were free and I will not buy pickles, anyway.I am going to just store in vinegar.

  4. I don't ever take any of that OTC stuff- the last time I had Benadryl it affected me the opposite and I was hyper and couldn't sleep! doctor just told me to start taking the CoQ10- guess it's good for aches/pains, hypertension and cholesterol. I haven't started it yet.

  5. I have a wheat allergy and that makes me terribly, horribly itchy. Could that be an issue for you?

    1. Patti,
Yes, I do! However, that is generalized itching ALL over my body. I took one bite of wheat bread after I had eliminated it for a month and felt like I had been attacked by fireants, especially on my back. This is just on my hands as though I got something on my hands. I can eat nasty, gummy white bread and I am usually okay. Until I was in my 20s I regularly had hives all over that itched.

    2. Yes, if I eat wheat my mouth tingles, I get hives all over, acid reflux and chest pressure (up to mild anaphylactic shock). If I it touch wheat bread, I will get hives on my hands, but not anywhere else.

    3. Patti,
I figured out I could eat wheat bread if it was not whole wheat. I may have to rethink that. I have a different kind of bread this week and wonder if that could be part of my hives problem. My ears hurt which is a sign my throat is closing. When I leave off wheat, I do have less acid reflux and less lung problems.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
