Review: Betty Crocker Gluten Free Chocolate Chocolate Chip Muffins

No, I won't be buying these again! However, since I bought a second package, I suppose I will have to bake the other.  The first one was in the cabinet in plain sight, but I could not find it.

When I mixed these today, I scraped the bowl and tasted. The mix has rice flour. Obviously, rice flour is gritty. When I baked them, the rice flour was still gritty as I ate the muffins hot and then as I ate cooled ones.

I am sorry, but the grit got in the way of satisfaction. For you it may not be a problem. The taste was good and chocolatey and the chips were very melty even when cold. The package says that it makes 5 muffins. Correct, there was no dough for another to make it 6.

Several months ago, I bought a pack of 6 silicone muffin cups. I used those to bake, placing them in a cake pan. Now, I have to wash them.

I have plenty of cupcake papers, so that won't be a problem for the rest of my life. Sometime before she died 1993, way before she died, my mother gave me a lifetime supply of muffin cups. I gave some to my daughter, maybe to someone else. I still have boxes and boxes of them. Just now I remembered that she gave me these muffin cups in 1978.

Now, I am not sure if I will ever buy the rice flour after the gritty feeling.

Your turn
Have you ever used rice flour in anything? Does the grittiness get in the way of satisfaction?

  1. I understand the struggle. It's hard to find a good substitute.

    1. Sonya Ann,
Have you found a substitute for wheat? I just roam the aisles of the grocery store. I cannot see through these glasses, so need someone often to read the store tags or hand me things from the top. I think I will just chew on a potato, a baked one, of course.

  2. I had never liked anything gluten free until April when I had a piece of my sister's birthday cake. Her husband and his family are celiac and have been eating gluten free for years. The cake was chocolate and gluten free and was the best cake I had ever eaten, period! I still think finding great gluten free food that tastes good is still a matter of luck. It's like having to kiss a lot of frogs till you find a prince. Lots and lots of breads and desserts for the chickens. Good luck in your travels in the land of gluten free.

    1. tana50,
Lucky chicken! Do you know what kind of mix or what recipe they used or was it a bakery cake? I saw a recipe for a flour free cake and another for flour free candy/cookies, don't remember where. This frog-kissing is getting old. Great analogy.

Actually, wheat-free is what I need. The allergist said I have no problem, no sensitivity to gluten. The whole grain wheat anything gives me the most problem. Thanks.

  3. Linda do you have a health food place in town? That is where I shopped when I thought I had a problem with gluten. They have people there to answer questions.

    1. carol,
Not really. I called one place asking for stevia and none of the employees had ever heard of it. At another place the owner tried to tell me that valerian was a pure form and valium was the processed form of something, They always try to diagnose me and sell me a program or boatload of a "program." They think I walked in the door for a diagnoses and cure for my fatness.

  4. I have some products (baking mixes) in my freezer left from the last time Son1 visited. I will give them a try and let you know what I think of them.

    1. Today I bought a pack of the Aldi brand GF cookies (Vanilla because the chocolate one had dutch process cocoa) They had that weird grainy after feel, but they tasted great.

    2. Anne,
Oh, thanks for the heads up on those. I just cannot get past the gritty/grainy feeling. The muffins were moist and gritty--weird combination of sensations. I think potato or other grain flour might work better.

  5. Wish I could find a good GF cookie mix or bread mix, etc.... Rice flour tastes dry and gritty to me too. Sometimes I just do without rather than have something that is unsatifying. Take care.

    1. Crystal,
The Betty Crocker muffin mix was not dry at all, just gritty. Unbearable. You are so right. I am not going to eat something unsatisfying.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
