Additive Dangers: Gums

Since I have discovered multiple allergies, I am so much more aware of what I feel when I eat food. One thing I have noticed is that foods with multiple gums seem to make me feel worse. Even though these probably won't kill me, why eat them?

Five indigestible ingredients found in food.

Summary at the bottom of article.

Have you noticed how guar gum, carrageenan, xanthum, and now gellan are added to many foods to give them creaminess, even yogurts have these. Isn't yogurt by its very nature creamy? Oh, not creamy enough?

Your turn
Have you noticed the gums added to all sorts of foods? Do you think they affect the way you feel after eating them? Is your plain yogurt creamy enough or do you feel the need for a gum to make it creamier?

  1. Linda this is scary. Makes sense how you feel after you eat certain things. I guess this does back to the saying "if your grandma didn't eat it, neither should you." Do we have to make everything from scratch?

    1. carol,
We pay for convenience, not just in price, but in junk to make it stay edible. I do read quite a bit. It's surprising what is in the plain yogurt brands, not to mention other simple foods.

    1. carol,
Me too. And, where do you get xanthum gum?

    2. I think xanthum gum is used in gluten-free baking sometimes to get things to stick together? If I'm thinking of the right ingredient it can be bought at health food stores. Not that it necessarily should be... The ingredient list that really gets me is on half-and-half. Shouldn't it just be milk and cream???

  3. I like plain yogurt.

I wish they wouldnt play with our food so much. If you want creamy, why not just use a creamy product to start with?

    1. kylie,
And, if yogurt isn't creamy enough, what is. Are we being treated like babies whose palates reject food on mouth feel?
