Cutting My Own Hair

My hairdresser won't be cutting hair for a year. That is enough to cause serious depression. Not only will I have to break in a new hairdresser, I will have to pay her to train her.

I remarked to a young female employee at WM that I loved her bang cut. Of course, her hair was coarse and thick like my children's hair. Mine is very fine and has decided to be thinner, too.  I told her I was so desperate that I thought about cutting the back. The front and sides are easy.

Following her instructions, I put my hair, minus bangs and sides into a ponytail right below my crown, actually on the back of my head and cut off a certain amount of the ponytail. IT WORKED! Now, don't cut off the whole ponytail. Unless you want to...lol.

She said she found a youtube video on "how to cut your hair."  There are probably hundreds, so I just did what she showed me.

A high ponytail on the top of the head gives shorter layers. The ponytail placement and how much you cut off are the two factors that determine the cut. I think exbf is relieved to hear I don't want him to cut it again like he did about three years ago.

While I was in KMart getting more bargains, I saw a friend, not a close friend at all. But, I knew she would tell me the truth. She and her friend were shocked that I cut it so even. They wanted to know how I did it. Score! Then, while in WM, I saw the same employee who said it looked good. A customer wanted her to explain how to cut it like mine, in layers and with a ponytail.

That is $20 each month I can save. I know it's a lot, but since I have been ill, she has refused payment. This is my one really big splurge. I need my hair long, but not stringy; layered, but not chopped up; cut to look fuller, but not left too bushy at the bottom.

When I was married, I cut ex's hair and both girls' and boy's hair.

Your turn
Do you ever cut your hair like this? Cut it at all? Cut others' hair? Given anyone a horrid haircut? Gotten a horrid home or shop haircut?

  1. I cut my hair all the time. I figure if I screw it up too badly it will grow again. It's just hair.

    1. Anne,
That's what the beauticians say who have given me a crummy haircut, "It's just hair. It will grow out." My though is, "So, give me back my money." My hair is one thing I am picky about!

  2. My mother cut all of our hair when we were kids and now my husband cuts the hair of anyone who asks. My daughter cut her boyfriends hair this week.

I'm not game to touch anyone's hair with scissors and I'm no longer game to let anyone but a hairdresser touch mine but with some of the dodgy cuts I've had, I'm not sure the hairdressers are any better

  3. Kylie,
I will cut anyone's hair. Sometimes, I have to hold the person down...lol.

So, you understand the hairdresser dilemma. I had one woman listen to what I wanted, while talking to someone else and looking at the other person! Needless to say, I was so upset. I called and yelled at her. She apologized for my not liking the cut. She never apologized for the haircut and offered to do it over. "Do you think I am crazy and let you touch my hair again?" That is one of three times I cried when I saw my haircut and only the one time I called back and yelled.

  4. Many years ago I tried to save money by cutting my two boy's hair at home. When I was finished, it looked like an insane weed whacker had been at their heads. Had to take them to town for haircuts anyway. The barber charged me extra because I had made such a mess of their hair. To this day they won't let me near them with a scissors. :)

    1. Vicki,
That is sad and funny that they fear you with scissors. When I was 17 and my sister was 14, I cut her hair. It was so horrible. She has not forgotten and reminded me last time I saw her. For 55 years, she holds a grudge! Even though I am very good at cutting hair, she would probably scream at me me if I even came near her with scissors. Thanks for that comment. I wonder how many other people have similar experiences.

    2. Linda...The boys don't really fear me with scissors. But they do like to tease me now and then. It is kind of a family joke. :)

      I was teasing you, too!

  5. I cut my boys hair with clippers. Two of my foster kids wanted me to drive over 40 minutes to some shop. I brome science the cost of gas and the cost, they changed their minds. My older sons use clippers as well to cut their own hair. A friend trimmed my hair last week. I hadn't had it done in over a year. I do cut my bangs myself.

    1. Michelle,
My son wanted to get a haircut in a beauty shop when he was twelve. I praised his looks, but he had me cut it after that. He didn't like the cut. If I went for a year, my hair would be down to my waist! Yay for all the bang cutters.

  6. My hair is simple enough a #3 shaver cuts my hair in less than a few minutes.

    1. Ur-spo,
Yes, men can get proper haircuts easily. Your style would not flatter me at all. It probably took me longer to get the ponytail up than it did to cut yours. I wonder how much your cut would cost in a shop.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
