Bacon Frustration and Other Stuff

Two twelve-ounce packages of tasty bacon went back to Walmart today. I hope they get their money back from the processor! Monday, while I was still shaky and dizzy and feverish, I decided scrambled eggs and bacon would be good for me. As I stood there shaking and my hand trembling, trying to pick and peel off strips of bacon, all that happened was shredding and strings of bacon.

Really, I was ready to cry by the time I managed to pick off the single pieces. Usually, I just peel four slices off at a time. Let me back up. I detest bacon not done and soft on the ends. So, I slice the whole pack in half first thing. So, when I peel off a chunk of four pieces, I am really only eating two slices. Are you with me?

If I throw in the four slices still stuck together, I wait and pick them apart as they get warmer and begin to curl. It works. I tried that Monday, and all I got was 3.5 strings of bacon. Yes, I had four pieces of bacon. But, considering this was paper thin, I really got only 2 slices.

I am NOT a fan of thick bacon. That was not the problem. Too thin is obviously problematic, also. I want it just right. It's out there and some is now in my refrigerator.

This was local bacon, Pell City, as opposed to being a big national chain. Sorry, I went with Hormel. There are two local bacon factories, one three miles and the other six miles from me.  Next time. Oh, forgot--one sets up at the market four blocks from me. Neither was open at the time of day I went shopping.

Walmart refused to give me cash or credit on a card because food with no receipt has to be traded for food. Bummer! I was in no mood to shop for food. I just wanted to get the bacon out of my refrigerator, NOW.

Tomorrow, I want a BLT. If not tomorrow, then Friday when exbf comes. I won't be having bread, just a BLT salad--bacon, lettuce, tomato, Miracle Whip.

I don't need apples but decided to get one Honey Crisp. She rung it up--$1.30 for one apple! So, I left it there. That brand is on sale somewhere. I don't buy bagged apples because I have gotten too many bruised or rotten ones in bags. No lectures! I have wasted too much money on bags. The one of me does not eat them fast enough.

Your turn
Bacon? Do you have a favorite brand, flavor or cut? Are you frustrated over return policies that are weird?

  1. I love bacon but since I gave up pork, only turkey bacon for me! I'm heading for Aldi's at 9 AM when they first open- nothing is appealing to me food-wise so I'm not sure what I will buy, list and all.

    1. NAN,
For years, I just never ate bacon. Then, after all the bacon talk everywhere, I gave in and bought some bacon. I do limit the bacon I eat. Buying food is not something I was eager to do until I read the Sprouts and Kroger ad. I need to read the ones that came in the mail today.
Grapes at $0.99/lb did pique my interest.

  2. I love Nueske's applewood smoked bacon, but only buy it once or twice a year. It is so good but insanely expensive.

    1. Anne,
I haven't heard of that brand. Maybe it is sold at Publix. I am going to start limiting how often I have bacon since I need to ration my consumption of nitrites/nitrates because of the carcinogenic risk. Thanks.

    1. Sonya Ann,
CRISPY! If someone else wants to stand and try to peel off whole pieces of bacon, I will eat it paper thin. I do like it thin, but this was like peeling off wet toilet paper. I am hungry now, too. Bacon talk does it to me everytime.

    1. Anon,
Yes. However, the doctor questioned me about all meats. He told me that even though I need to carry the Epipen, I can have what does not obviously cause me a problem. Today, I ate a homemade sweet roll from the market and did not suffer after one bite, so I ate the rest later.

When I ate the bacon, nothing happened. Well, I learned I cannot eat much pork. Beef is off the table forever. And lamb. I love bacon but will not eat pork often. It's a tricky balance, and I may not eat pork ever if there is one reaction!

  5. There is a bacon at Publix calledMaverick ( I think) that is supposed to be sugar free and nitrate and nitrite free. Not positive though

    1. Anne,
Thanks for telling me. I was going to try that and then go to the two local bacon factories. I eat so little bacon and not very often, but I do like to avoid nitrates/nitrates.

  6. If you remember, my fiancé (oh did you know we got engaged?) runs his family's old-fashioned meat market so we get all meat from his store for free. Their bacon is pretty thick. I used to hate it, but have gotten used to it with time. I always cut it in half before frying.

P.S. It's been ages since we chat. I'll email you so hopefully we can catch up!

    1. TLC,
I got your email. Lucky you! Free meat. As I recall, they carried some other items, too. No, did not know you were engaged.

    2. Yes, they do. In addition to meat, we get free eggs, milk, TP, paper towels, candy/ice cream (if we're craving it), etc. The only meat I buy elsewhere is rotisserie chicken since they don't make it. The grocery section is limited, so we still buy specialty items elsewhere. He also donates a turkey to the family I adopt every Christmas. Tonight he's marinating a couple steaks for me to fry & is bringing home some bacon for my green bean recipe (+ mashed potatoes).

  7. I do buy the bags of organic apples. What I can't eat, I make applesauce with, then I can it for a rainy day. So much better than applesauce you can buy.

    1. Patti,
I went ahead and bought a 3-pound bag of gala apples for $1.99. I figure is half of them are inedible, I am still ahead of the game.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
