Why Don't I Have Flour?

A blueberry cobbler seemed like a great idea. But, there was no flour in my flour canister. I had to think hard about where my extra flour was stored. Then, it hit me: in the freezer that died last spring.

I always use all purpose flour in five-pound bags. Last Monday I gave away a tiny bag of flour given to me because it was self-rising. That was a bad move. I really could have used it! Now, I was going to have to purchase more flour. Fortunately, I remembered I had a huge box of Bisquick.

Since I don't bake as much as I have in the past, I decided to see if the tablespoon of flour in the canister was still good. Nope. It was rancid. The flour canister had to be washed and dried. I now have more flour. I DON'T have freezer room to put in five pounds of flour! I do this to kill the eggs that come in flour so they won't hatch in the airtight canister.

My only recourse is to somehow get more food out of the freezer or put the flour in pint jars to freeze a bit at a time. This is all disheartening! I never realized how much I used and depended on my freezer.

The cheap chest type freezer is small. But, more than that, I cannot lift food out of there to search the bottom for what I need. grrr

I received a $50 coupon from Lowe's since I bought the washer, but really cannot go into debt for any more.

There is no flour here because it was all thrown in the trash. The End.

Your turn
Has the lack of a major appliance thrown you for a loop? Made things more difficult?

  1. I keep my flour in the fridge. Right now I have too much sugar and need to just give away a few bags. A couple of stores had BOGO and guess I overbought LOL. I'm trying to half*** diet and use the stuff in my fridge and pantry. I thawed 2 boneless chicken breasts and will make some chicken salad and probably pound one thinly, dip it in egg white and bread crumbs and fry which isn't all that healthy but I like. Yesterday I made a pan of mac cheese with all the cheese dregs and I have plenty of food to hold me for a few days! TOO MUCH in fact. After church. I am thinking no shopping at all!

    1. NAN,
I had four or five 5-lb bags in the freezer. I may just put all this in quart jars and store in the refrigerator after freezing.

I bought 36 lbs of sugar at $0.25/lb a few years ago. I am NOT giving it away. Storing it in quart jars keeps it forever. I rarely use sugar since I rarely bake!

      Dinner sounds delisious.

  2. I keep my extra flour in fridge. The flour in the canister I place a bay leaf in with. Keeps flour from getting bugs.

    1. CTMOM,
Got oats. No food processor. However, I did use my coffee bean grinder once to see if it made oats into flour. It did.

  4. I buy mostly organic whole wheat pastry flour from the bulk bins. I have found freezing it for just a couple of weeks will keep any critters from hatching, but it does become rancid a lot quicker. I put it in several quart freezer bags, lay them flat and stack them. I am not sure it takes up less space but it is easier to access.

My garbage disposal died a couple of weeks before Christmas and it only took me a few days without it to realize how much I use it ( Yeah, I know, First World problems) so I bought a new one and now the world is orbiting properly.

    1. Anne,
I only freeze for three days. That works. Yes, no flour is not the end of the world or no garbage disposal. But, we become accustomed to these things. My world would orbit properly if I had a larger freezer. Well, the smallest one that is frost-free would work.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
