Ethanol in Gasoline and 100% Gasoline

This station is 22 miles from my house.

Difference in prices

It seems that ethanol with ruin small engines. I did buy 100% gas for my lawnmower until the only station that carried it disappeared. I will have to ask a motorcycle shop or a rider at my regular gas station. It is around somewhere, just a new location. Motorcycles will be ruined also, or so I have been told.

Do cars really get better gas mileage?

Your turn
Have you turned, returned, to no-ethanol gasoline? Have you had a lawn machine ruined by ethanol? Or, do you have lots of stations from which to buy 100% gas? What do the motorcycle owners think about the damage from ethanol?

  1. My husband (who used to be a motorhead) says ethanol will ruin car engines too. So we've started buying non-ethanol fuel for everything. Sadly, it is more expensive. However, he says we'll pay for it one way or another, either in higher fuel prices or increased engine repairs! It does seem to me that I get better gas mileage and that the car runs better on the "real" stuff. Fortunately we can get it close by. It's a shame you have to go so far to get yours.

    1. Leigh,
Oh, but the "official" word is that it won't hurt a car. It's funny that for years it was bad for cars. Someone told me cars were different now. ??? I have an old car.

I don't actually use 100% gas. I just was passing by and realized that I could have gotten it for my lawn mower if I had brought a gas can.

I guess I should use 100%. Thanks for a reminder that my car suffers.

  2. We get what we can afford where we can afford it. Sorry 'bout our car's future, but we won't be able to have it fixed no matter which gas we use.

  3. I've wondered if ethanol gas was bad for cars. I usually get gas from wherever is convenient, I think we have a mix of full-on gas and the ethanol added. Maybe I'll stick to 100%.

    1. Abby,
If you can find it and afford it, I am sure it would be best for your car.

  4. It was my experience that my 1993 van (which I still have) got about 10% better mileage pre-ethanol, and my mechanic confirmed that ethanol was the reason. As for small motors, there was a program on Oregon public TV about the havoc ethanol wreaks with boat motors, and my lawnmower manual warns me against using gas with a high % of ethanol.

    1. Snowbrush,
Thanks. My lawnmower is about 25 years old and runs really well. Okay, I ran it a year on ethanol and have not had it started in over a year. I get someone else to use his mower. I wonder if it will even run now. The manual is probably here, but I have not bothered to see if it says anything about ethanol. I really don't need to get less gas mileage in my car or ruin the lawnmower! Thanks for the confirmation on gas mileage.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
