Courthouse Step in My Front Yard

a step from the old courthouse
My neighbor died when she was ninety-four-years-old. I went over almost every day of the week for about ten years. She told me one day that the things I did for her kept her out of the nursing home. Actually, on the days I went to school, I could only go over for ten minutes or so. But, that was enough to change a blown light bulb that left her in the dark, drag her garbage to the road, or get a cheese sandwich.

She kept sliced cheese and white bread. I know eating that all the time helped me put on a few pounds. She taught me how to cook sweet potatoes so they were delicious. She taught me which varieties of sweet potato were the tastiest.

When she died, my heart broke. I was lonely. She depended on me, and I depended on her needing me.

She had a stone bench that her daughter allowed me to have after her mother's death. The front yard corner holds it now. After I put a bench under an oak tree, the other corner neighbors near me put a bench on their corners, too.

The courthouse-step bench is one of three benches that grace my yard and allow me to sit in various places to enjoy the yard or rest when my back and knee hurt.

Charlie on Saturday took a 20' iron pipe, used it as a lever and pushed the step back where it was once again centered. A friend's truck had pushed it off center while she was driving my generator to its place in the yard after a tornado left me with no electricity for five days.

I have never seen a soul sit on either of these benches! These are more expensive and landscaped, but I like mine better. And, I and my friends use my bench.

Your turn
Do you find that the older you get, the more you need to sit when you are in the yard? I do. Do you have a bench anywhere in your yard? More than one? Does your bench have a history? Do you actually use your bench?

  1. I don't have a bench, but I have a table and chairs on my deck. After working in the yard, I usually end up sitting in a chair on the deck, enjoying the sunshine. Willy Dunne Wooters and I quite often sit on the deck when the weather is nice, which it was today.

    Love,

    1. Janie,
If I could just make it back to the house.... Who is Willy Dunne Wooters, pray tell? Our weather was balmy in the 70s, just right for yard/porch sitting today/.

  2. I have chairs in my back yard. I sit in them on days that are nice, and watch my hens...

  3. JandM,
I have another bench in front of my hens' pen. Watching hens is fun and relaxing, not to mention highly entertaining.

  4. I don't have a bench - but need one. Need several. I love my garden but working in it is getting harder and harder. I have crawled across the lawn to pull myself up on the steps before now.
And I love your bench - it has charm as well as being practical. And the sentimental memories must add to its value.

    1. EC,
Yes, you definitely need a bench or three like I have. Things getting harder is one reason I got benches. Although that thought was not in my mind, when I saw a bench, I would think of where I could put it.

Thanks. I think it is loaded with charm and a good story. I think of my neighbor every time I see it. I really loved her.

  5. I really like your courthouse step bench. What a unique piece.
I don't have a bench--but I do have a table and chairs. Funny, though.......I seldom ever sit when I'm outside. Work , work, work. Guess I'll have to learn to kick back and enjoy!

    1. My sitting is not usually "kick back and enjoy." I am usually struggling to keep from throwing up or collapsing in pain. But, while I am sitting down, there are usually chickens in sight to enjoy.

      I suppose it is a one-of-a-kind piece.

  6. I like yours too. I haven't forgotten about building one like it on my property with the granite slab from an old barn foundation. It just takes time to get aesthetic things done here. ;-)

    1. Sue,
Plus, it is something that takes several strong men and maybe equipment. I had to hire a tow truck to move my step. THEN, the guy broke it by slamming it onto the ground. There is another two feet around here just sitting on the ground as a seat.

    1. markdebby,
I tried. But, now I wonder what it takes for a neighbor to help me. Even when I was using a walker after surgery, no one did anything other than wave cheerfully as they drove by. But, I did not help her for future help for me. I just imagined how I could make her life easier. Thanks.

  8. I have table and chairs and a couple of benches in different parts of the yard. The rare times that they are looked after, tidied and mowed around I like sitting out there and it's nice to have somewhere for visitors to sit too. But sadly, that is rarely the case as I am too slack to move, mow, move back into place...What I need is no grass area for them to be but we haven't got that yet...One day..
I like you bench, solid and simple. Next warm day take time to "kick back and enjoy" out there. Let them give you the pleasure that you deserve.

    1. Barb,
The mowing and cleaning around or moving is a great pain. One of my benches is on the concrete slabs, so it is easy. Another must be moved and moved back. The stone bench is never in grass because not much is there...lol. So, it is usually accessible.

I want an area of pebbles in a brick enclosure for on bench. The other needs slabs of stone, or, rather that I what I want.

Today, I sat on two of the benches. It was 75 F out today. It will be warmer tomorrow and then a slow slide into winter.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
