I know my health is my responsibility. I will not give up chocolate! I do eat much less. But, there are things I can do. Eating garlic to lower the risk of a blood clot or heart attack or stroke is something I can do. I always keep garlic visible on the counter. But, since I don't put things in food, leave it to Tommy, it never is included. My head of garlic had gone bad.
I bought another this week with the goal of consuming one clove each day, at least. I asked Tommy if he liked garlic. He doesn't. I assured him he would not be able to taste strong garlic. One of his favorite dishes at Ruby Tuesday is zucchini, olive oil and garlic. I chopped a whole clove and put it in the soup which we will eat over a few days. So, there will be no consuming a whole clove each day. I will increase consumption slowly so as not to freak out Tommy.
Plaque in arteries is not anything to ignore.
We cooked soup again today. It was on before noon, and Tommy managed not to have it done by 9 pm. How is possible when I told him to put it on high?
He could not detect the garlic taste. Next time, I will put two cloves. He said it was crunchy when he ate it??? Garlic cooked for 7 hours will not be crunchy. The potatoes were crunchy along with the carrots.
Tommy knew all the vegetables had no sodium. Yet he used no salt on his soup. Maybe he can now taste food without salt. Progress!
It has been so cold here. I could not sleep because of cold feet. I did discover how to keep my feet warm. Tomorrow, I will reveal that. lol
I discovered how to get Tommy to keep the short bookcase by his chair and the door uncluttered. Before Christmas I put three electric candles on a long white tray. When I had this ready, I told him to keep junk off the bookcase. Since the tray goes on the table where the Christmas tree is rooting, he still keeps the area around the candles free of junk. I have not mentioned clutter since before Christmas. I had room to put my salsa bouquet there, too.
Okay, time to hang up nightgowns to dry!
Do you dislike garlic or use it freely?
Do you deliberately eat some things for your health?
I use garlic but not as much as I use onions. We love onions.
ReplyDeleteBelinda,
DeleteI do use more onions. But, I love garlic, too. I just forget garlic! I think I used the last onion, so need more.
You can buy garlic capsules to take daily. I know lots of people that do that.
ReplyDeleteCheryl,
DeleteI had not thought about that. I know garlic powder is supposed to be as good as fresh garlic for health benefits. So, the garlic capsules sounds like a good way to get enough garlic and worrying about Tommy not liking it. Thanks.
Garlic capsules do sound much easier--great tip, Cheryl!
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE our alliums here. Garlic, onions, shallots, scallions
I use minced garlic in a jar (read the label carefully; some mfrs put unwanted crap in) for much of my cooking. It's not quite as perfect as freshly minced garlic, but you just can't beat the convenience. I use fresh when it really matters, like in salad dressings.
That is very strange that you had crunchy potatoes & carrots in a soup that was cooked for 7 hours. Maybe the burner isn't working right?
Mmm, soup. I promised DD that I'd make chicken barley soup this weekend. I have a big pot of freshly made stock to use.
Happy Friday to all!
Why, oh why do I dislike soup?
ReplyDeleteI wouldn’t say I deliberately eat things for my health. You’re not going to find me, say, eating an apple a day just to keep the doctor away, if I don’t feel like eating an apple. I just try to eat healthily as a rule. Since I do all the shopping, and I cook most things from scratch, that’s fairly easy.
That said, we LOVE garlic in this house. It’s a staple. I even grew some in the garden last summer. I always make sure I have at least a jar of minced garlic on hand. It’s a pantry staple. Nothing destroys household odors as quick as sautéing some garlic! We also really like shallots, leeks and onions.
Meg,
DeleteI just like the soups I like. Any soup won't do. I like the baked potato soup at Chicken Salad Chick and the wild rice mushroom soup at Publix and hot and sour soup.
It's just that I make this one lots.
Sauté garlic to remove kitchen odors? Never heard of that.
I do eat an apple and banana every day. But, it is because I love them. I feel abused if I don't have them.
I like garlic. But here in the north, the long neck garlic (there are several types of garlic) doesn't last all that long, best to use it in the growing season, and enjoy eating the long garlic scapes (long shoots they send up) in the spring. So, all winter I use minced, freeze dried garlic (same health benefits). https://www.litehousefoods.com/products/freeze-dried-garlic/
ReplyDeletemeetsy,
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of freeze dried garlic. I have no idea what kind I eat. I have always wondered about scapes. I have wanted to dehydrate garlic, but never have. Thanks.
