Wednesday: Making Thanksgiving Dinner Plans

Wednesday, mostly I slept. I was exhausted from Tuesday lunch and voting. It really does not matter which 8 or 14 hours during the day that I sleep except when Tommy is coming here at 9:30.

Today, I did decide what I am having for Thanksgiving. It is all traditional with nothing new.

*Some sort of poultry. A boneless turkey breast is what I am aiming for. We will see. I refuse to spend $10+ for a 3 lb. breast. Even bone-in is expensive. I might put sage on chicken breast and call it good. As a matter of fact, I will season the chicken in the crockpot tonight with salt, pepper, and sage. yum

* Cranberries. Last week, I bought two 1-lb bags of cranberries for $0.79 each! I will cook at least one of those with only a bit of sugar. NO ORANGES! I have a can of jellied Ocean Spray, too. I will have both on my plate.

*Green bean casserole. I have the beans and mushroom soup. I need the onions for the topping. At the price in the store, I might have to get a bank loan.

*Sweet potatoes. The Beauregard are so sweet, I just take them out of the skins after baking in the oven. Tommy prefers then plain like that. I absolutely detest sweet potatoes with marshmallow. But, sweet potato casserole is delicious. We like plain.

*Mashed potatoes, maybe.

*Stuffing. Home made  cornbread dressing by me or from box.

*Gravy with boiled eggs in it.  I have eggs.

*Field peas. We love field peas, so maybe?

*Pumpkin pies.

I am tired already.

We do have a place where we are eating Thanksgiving Dinner. So, I might make my dinner before or afterwards. I need leftovers, lots of leftovers!

I have poultry, fresh cranberries, canned cranberries, canned pumpkin, stuffing, potatoes, and eggs.

I need to buy sweet potatoes, fried onions, field peas.

Maybe I have been too ambitious?

What is on your Thanksgiving menu? Or, are you going away?

Try this recipe on another day. Always turns out nice. Your turkey day choices sound delish.
Tell me about eggs in gravy. I have never heard of this.
Hope you continue to get better and rested.

    1. Barb,
In the South, this is common. We just diced boiled eggs and put in the giblet gravy. I will not have giblets, but I will put in bits of thigh or let meat. I will check the link.

  2. I am cooking for my entire family, Mom,sis and BIL . We will have a turkey and a ham, green bean casserole, asparagus, tossed green salad, cranberry relish (no cooked stuff here) oven roasted carrots and potatoes, dressing and gravy, stuffed mushrooms, stuffed celery, rolls, pumpkin pie (bought because I hate it) pecan pie, cake of some sort (spice cake with cooked caramel frosting maybe) assorted fudges (chocolate, praline, peanut butter) and possibly bite size cheesecakes and frosted brownies. I will have a lot of these desserts leftover from other meals while everyone is in town so I am not making it all just for Thanksgiving.

    1. Anne,
That is a lot of food, but you have more people to feed than I do, and you have a ton more energy! Bought pies are nasty compared to my pumpkin pie. Cranberry relish? I am glad to know you are not making all those desserts just for Thanksgiving Day. This meal sounds wonderful. Thanks for the rundown.

  3. it all sounds delicious!
we dont have thanksgiving here of course but we eat turkey at Christmas time. I have never cooked a turkey. One time i was having the whole family h ere for Christmas and got sick just before so I bought smoked chickens instaed of traditional turkey or ham. I love smoked chicken and don't normally buy it so it felt special and didnt take any work

    1. kylie,
Thanks. You should adopt Thanksgiving since it is a good excuse to cook until you are ill and exhausted, eat until you are stuffed and comatose, and rest for a week! Of course, some people use it as a stage for family drama! Smoked chickens sound great and a great timesaver. I imagine rotisserie chickens from the store will be popular here on Thanksgiving. We never had ham at Thanksgiving or Christmas since my parents wanted and loved a turkey and that is what we children wanted. We did have ham at other times of the year. Thanks.

  4. For the past several years hubby and I have been fortunate to spend our winters in Florida. But this year, two surgeries and post op recovery have delayed our departure. I'll have my aunt and uncle, who just lost their daughter six weeks ago, my dad, and our son and two granddaughters for Thanksgiving dinner. I'll still be in a walking boot but I'm planning to serve turkey, two kinds of dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole (you're 100& right about the onions!), a green salad, homemade hot rolls, jellied cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie and salted caramel cake for dessert. I lean towards the traditional.

    1. Catrina,
Sorry about the delay/surgeries and missing the warmth of Florida. But, being with your family will be good, especially for your aunt, I imagine. I lean toward the traditional, too. What two kinds of dressing?

  5. We are going out, but hopefully I will get a food assignment. Will have family around. I have always said I could have a hotdog and a glass of water on the porch and, as long as I am with those I love, I am happy.

    1. Nawm,
Thanks. I don't put egg in my dressing, but it would not be surprised if someone did put in eggs.

  7. It will be another year with out one.
Someone works that day and most of the weekend. I have nowhere to go. I don't need the calories, so there it is.

    1. You two can always catch a dinner out just so you do not miss all the Thanksgiving food. Or, do like I am doing, making the meal later than Thanksgiving just to have leftovers.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
