Sunday was mid 50s and damp feeling and sunless. I was not comfortable at all. The lack of light greatly affects me, more so lately.
Last week, I saw a shelf full of free books. I chose a Dean Koontz book, not knowing anything about the author or book. I have heard of him, but I don't remember what. I read fourteen pages and have not picked it up since. It is in the car, so I may read it there when I have a few moments to waste.

I planted twenty yellow onions Sunday. Thinking I could just pull out the weeds from the pot of bought soil, I did not wear gloves. I ended up with dirt under my fingernails as I had to put my hand in the dirt and pull out the roots. This pot has the free iris given to me. Now, it has onions, too. I hope onions and iris are compatible. I don't mind my hands being dirty, but I hate dirt packed under my nails.
The bag said these onions are to be planted during the fall for a head start on spring vegetables, but people tell me I should not plant now, to wait until spring. So, I have another 100 onions to plant somewhere.
At the lunch this week, I was talking to the woman who gave me the succulent, asking her about it. As we left she asked me if I liked to read. I assured her I did as she opened her purse to half a dozen books. When she asked if I like romance or mystery, I assured her that I like anything other than romance. I received Debbie Macomber's "The Trouble with Angels." I may not read this and give it back to her.
Then, she asked me if had gotten cards as she shuffled though a bunch of cards in sandwich bags lying on a table. No, I had not, so I brought home four Christmas cards that someone had left for us to take home.
So, now I have a bag of four cards, a ham and cheese sandwich from lunch, and two books. I ate the sandwich, will use the Christmas cards, and may dump the books!
My ear has been hurting all week. Doctor said nothing was wrong with it. ??? I suppose it could be a tooth, but I have been pecking the tooth--nothing. Plus, the other ear is starting to hurt.
Why are free books always boring or horrid books? Have you ever planted onions?--the little tiny onions?

I have never planted onions, so no onion advice here.
ReplyDeleteI have found some really good free books on Kindle, plus our neighborhood has a facebook page and readers are always offering books to either give or lend.
The Christmas cards are a timely freebie!
Anne,
DeleteI don't have or want a kindle, so nothing there for me. I never go on our community fb page. However, the free places have nothing I could ever care about.
That was what I was thinking--I can use these!
If I've ever been offered a free book, it's usually because the person didn't like it and is giving it away, ha. Like Anne though I have found some free ones for Kindle that have been good. I think a book has to grab your attention and make you want it. Just being given one it may not be one that you would have ever chosen I suppose.
ReplyDeleteNever planted the onions so I'm not sure. Worth it if it works, that's for sure.
1st Man, yes, people only give away horrible books. I feel like no one know me or my taste.
DeleteI spent $4 on 120 onions. I am going to plant them in different places and see where they like to be planted. Hopefully, chipmunks don't like onions. If they do, I will plant them with daffodils. Thanks.
I plant onions & potatoes, which are what grows best here. Where you live, planting in the fall is probably OK.
ReplyDeleteI plant them in the spring. People plant garlic here in the fall. I also read free kindle books and then delete them; like a private library.
Tewshooz,
DeleteThanks. I have garlic, too. I suppose we grown tomatoes best...lol. When do you plant onions and potatoes? Aren't you way up North? It seems like I remember you are in a state that borders Canada.
Someone gave me a kindle, but I have done nothing with it.
I love to read and journal (author, title, short sentence about the book) all my books and yes, I give them away! I'm weekly patron of the library but I also go to a local thrift store where you can buy a bag for $5 and all money goes to an animal rescue. This year I've read 137 books and I don't think I've kept over 3 or 4. So the books I give away are usually good books IMO. I prefer books with quirky characters and I don't care much for mysteries, fantasy and no romance. I just finished Pacchino- it was great- and am now reading Varina by the author of Cold Mountain. My sister is a reader too and gives me her books- she's not as frugal as I am and buys a lot of best sellers/NYTimes books. I could give you a list of some I reallly liked but it depends on the genre you enjoy.
ReplyDeleteNan,
Deletefourth try so it will be short. That's a lot of books. I cannot search for a particular book as it will mean money or standing for too long. Me too--no fantasy, mystery, and NO romance. A list would be generous but no guarantees that I will ever come across one. I purged 800 books and now have 1000 left. I think I have bought 2 books since then. Thanks.
Nan, I found a very good book that I plucked from a display at the library, a book that was a true store about a young girl, a Mormon who suffered the horrors of sexual abuse. I enjoyed that very much.
DeleteI love to read, but am limited in the genres I enjoy. I dislike romance, horror and mysteries. I also had a Kindle, but found I didn't enjoy reading. In fact, I started to dislike reading with the Kindle! I have found some great free books. The library in our Florida place has shelves of paperbacks they allow patrons to take, in exchange for leaving a book. I found a Maeve Binchy book which came home with me. I don't get to the library as much as I should, and haven't read as much as I should either. Growing up, my half dozen siblings and I didn't have much, but we had walls and walls of books. Our parents kept us close to home, but we were always allowed, encouraged in fact, to walk to the library. I particularly liked going in the summer, because the library had air conditioning!
ReplyDeleteMeg B,
DeleteThe Kindle was not a generous gift. It was just something someone gave me, not knowing if it worked or not. I suspect J might have stolen it or had received stolen property.
We all loved to read but we were not lucky enough to live near a library. That would have been heaven. We did not have a lot, but we did have books, too. Back in the 50s when I would have been going to library as a child, I don't remember any place with ac. Maybe the library or a bank, not even schools. Thanks!
Good for you for giving a book a try! I have discovered many gems this way: through fateful chance. Unfortunately the majority of them are disappointments but once in a while a 'gem' is found. So keep trying.
ReplyDeleteThe majority of free books are boring as we get rid of the bad ones and tend to keep the good ones.
Urspo,
DeleteI can do that, try a book. However, in 16 pages I know nothing about the book. I do not mind wordy, just give me a clue. I am going to check a senior center tomorrow. They have free books donated. Seniors can take a book and keep it. Last time I looked, there were dozen of copies of the same books.
I've never planted onions but I like to use them in recipes.
ReplyDeleteI like to read, it can be very relaxing.
All the best Jan
Jan,
DeleteTo avoid buying onions all the time, I buy Vidalia and dehydrate them. That way, onions are always ready for cooking. I never eat raw onions. I hope to cut out the middle man and grow my own onions.
