I Am My Own Worst Enemy

Sometimes, this is so true, especially when it comes to food/groceries that I bring into the house.
For the last six weeks or more, I have had no bread of any kind in the house. I just refuse to pay full price. There is plenty of bread in the big freezer where I cannot reach it. Exbf has not gotten it for me for various reasons. But, that is okay.

Several days, I had decided to go the Thrift Bread Store. For various reasons, I never got there until last Friday.

Feb. 13
Natures Own Bread 1 @$1.19
Flower's Buns 1 @ $4.29
TastyKake 1 @ $0.89
TastyKake 1 @ $0.39
hamburger buns--free for buying $7 worth of products

The $1.19 loaf of bread i whole wheat and hfcs free, preservative free. It is over $3 in the store. I was ready to leave when I spotted the long, dark rolls. The employees said they are made for The Outback. Delicious! So, I grabbed  bag. TastyKake looked good.

At the register I think I was about $0.20 shy of $7. I asked what was the cheapest item in the store. TastyKake in the old bin was $0.39, so I got that. Since I bought $7 worth of products, I got a punch on a punch card AND a free product from the free shelf. Hamburger buns looked nice. Now, I have too much bread, way too much.  The Tastykakes are chocolate cupcakes with cream inside and chocolate icing, perfect in a bowl or cup of milk. Yes, that is how I ate them, both the first day.

Plus, I was given another loaf of bread.  Aargh!

All this bread would not be a post if exbf were coming on his day off on Thursday. But, I told him not to come. It is just too cold. So, he won't be taking half of the bread and buns home...sigh. And, he won't be here to store it in the big freezer.

I have had too many cheese sandwiches, too much butter and jelly on bread, too much bare bun with  a Diet Coke.. I am planning more bread meals/snacks--peanut butter,  banana, Miracle Whip sandwiches; BLT, toast pizza. I am incorrigible. You don't need to say it or advise me. I know.

Your turn
Do you ever overbuy things you should not? Do you get sucked into a good deal? Like I said, I was giving some away, but he won't be here to get it.

  1. I've been sucked into a good deal or two and I've lived to regret it. It's not the end of the world, though.

    1. Janie,
No, not the end of the world, just probably the end of losing weight!. If exbf were still scheduled to come tomorrow, he could put it in big freezer and take some home.

  2. We went to the bread outlet yesterday to find Nature's Own 100% WW bread and it was CLOSED!! EMPTY!! NEVER to open again!!
It's the only bread I can eat, just one slice daily, and at $2.88 a loaf I'd like something costing less. Not going to happen. The next closest bread outlet is more than an hour away, not going to happen either. So, take advantage of what you have and enjoy every bite.

    1. Bellen,
Ouch! That would be a tragedy for me. I am mourning with you. This store moved to a new store last fall that is right next to the housing projects, so hopefully the people there will keep it open by purchasing enough to keep it open. Okay, so not so bad that I have too much. Sorry.

  3. I'm pretty good about not buying too many of one grocery item. Our kitchen & freezer are small, so not much storage.

    1. tlc,
I am usually good about that too. I have plenty of kitchen space, just a full freeze right now. Do you have a separate feezer?

  4. Those Outback rolls are my favorite. I've never had them anywhere but the Outback. Lots of butter is the way to eat those rolls (I think they are Anadama bread) . I got an "imposter recipe" and made them with the help of my bread machine. It's a molasses, brown sugar, and honey (with cocoa thrown in as a "cheat" for color) whole wheat bread, basically.

    1. 444,
This bread store has them, but rarely, which is why I grabbed a bag with 12 rolls. Thanks for the name. Does the imposter taste like chocolate?

  5. I get suckered into those deals too. Now I want a sandwich and a roll. Yum.
We don't have a lot of outlet bread stores around here anymore. They all seem to go out of business. We have to drive about 20 minutes to get to the nearest one but it is a pepridge farm one so it is amazingly good. I spent $25 last time but I gave a lot away. Plus we got a wonderful cake. Now, I'm really hungry.

    1. Sonya Ann,
My freezer takes care of over-buying, but I cannot get to it. I was given 8 loaves of whole wheat bread, not even out of date yet. I gave them to a friend who has four children, their spouses, and lots of grandchildren who have children. So, that will not be wasted. And, I do have chickens!

  6. I am a sucker for sales, so I do sometimes overbuy. Right now, I have four jars of mayonnaise that expire this month, but the more I think about why I have so many, the more sure I am that the problem was that I bought them on sale without knowing how many I already had at home.

    1. Snowbrush,
There is one store here that puts Miracle Whip on sale when it is about a month from "best if used by" date. So, now I check the dates. I have bought at sales when I did not realize I had plenty.

That is not an expiration date. It is a "best if used by" date. So, it can still be used safely. I would only get rid of food if the taste, color, or texture changed. It still won't hurt you even if it is not so tasty.

    2. Some do say "Use By," but I'm not going to throw something out unless it's way past the expiration date.

    3. That is "use by date" for best taste, texture, and nutrition. Otherwise, it won't kill you or make you ill. I don't throw out all the past the date items.

  7. Outlet stores can be a problem for me, so I stay away. Maybe you can chop up some of the bread and fry up some croutons. Add some cheese and spices. Put in plastic bags and will keep longer than the plain bread. Also great to snack on. And using the stove will help heat up your house. Good luck on eating it all up!

    1. The chickens love whole wheat bread. They just look at a whole slice and then at me as if the ask, "What? Are you crazy?" If I bread it in small pieces and throw it out, they are all over it like white on rice.

I went on a bread-eating spree the first day I had it. Now, I am slowing down on the consumption. I may mke some pimiento and cheese for sandwiches tomorrow.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
