PureWick Female Catheter

They put this on me. Gross? I thought so too, until I used it for four days. Just lie there are pee. you pee and it is sucked up into a jar.
Feeling worse. Sent home with wrong instructions for meds.
Do you know anyone who has used this?
lick below

at least six inches long, excluding tube

  1. I have heard of this appliance and it sounds like a good tool to me. Anytime they insert a regular "old school" catheter you run the risk of an infection.

I looked the Pure Wick up a few weeks ago. It is my understanding that it is quite expensive.

    1. Janet,
I wondered if something with urine constantly on it and my skin would not cause an infection.
Very expensive. I do get a good night's sleep. I awake because of the urge to go. But, I have to do the going myself.

  2. My sister has used this when in the hospital and said it worked wonderfully. She did say, it was harder to control herself at home though.

    1. Cheryl,
I was afraid I would inadvertently just let go thinking I did not have to get up when I got home. It was great to not have to call someone and hope they got to me in time.

  3. I used one of those for days when I was in the hospital too, about 5 years ago. I was told by a nurse it was invented by a son whose mother was incontinent. I was hooked up to oxygen and an IV. Getting out of bed wasn't happening. It was a total relief not to have to call someone all night long. I hope you are feeling better soon.

    1. Irene,
I had never heard of this until about 2 months ago. The genesis is interesting. I had 2 ivs and was going nowhere, either. I was happyI did not have to call anytime. I feel better in shoulder just this morning. It is still painful, but not the screaming pain with each slight motion. Thanks for the information.

  4. I have never seen such a device before! And I am embarrassed to admit it took me WAY too long to figure out how it is...deployed. LOL. Seems like a tremendously helpful device!

    1. Sue,
When I have seen pictures of it, I was confused, too. You would not believe the scenarios I conjured up. It was helpful.

  5. I know many people who have had Foley catheters, myself included. Foley catheters do run the risk of infection, which is why they try to get you up and about as soon as possible after a procedure, so they can remove them promptly. I haven’t seen the ones you picture in clinical use, however. Monitoring urine output is essential to assessing post operative recovery.

    1. Meg,
I hate the foley catheters. They did not want me getting up before the surgery.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
