His death is not an emotional event for me. He was the first professor I had at UAB and one of the last. I was most interested in the movements and literature he taught--Transcendentalism in America and Romanticism in England. So, we have lost him. I still have what he taught me that has enriched my life.
My favorite teacher who made literature come alive for me was my seventh-grade teacher and 10th grade English teacher.
I rode to Publix with Tommy while he shopped for the items on our list--prunes, bananas, Gum Interdental brushes, 2 chunks cheddar bogo, Boston Butt $17. 23. We need slaw and salad.
Heart is beating wrong. I don't know what that means.
Do you often think of favorite teachers and professors?
Oh yes, I can think of several teachers and professors who made an impact on my life. The good ones usually do. I hope you are feeling better today. Glad you were able to get out of the house for a little bit.
ReplyDeleteBelinda,
DeleteActually, I am not feeling as well as I think I should, not well at all. More afib I think.
I still think of Mr. Leighton, who was my junior school teacher. Absolute respect (he demanded it and got it). Then there was "Drew" who had us reading Dickens at 11, but best of all was "Scratch" (Mr. Etches) who knocked French into our heads whether we wanted it or not. Mad respect to all three of them! I hope you're starting to feel a little better by now!
ReplyDeleteTreaders,
DeleteThose teachers are worth remembering fondly by all of us. No, not feeling better and it worries me.
You probably have a heart arrythmia. It is quite common as you get older. My husband has one and it is managed well with medication. He has 6 months follow-ups with the cardiologist.
ReplyDeleteRuth,
DeleteI wonder! I have appt in 6 months.
Good morning Linda, I was going to say you may be having afib and should go to the ER or Dr. Just my two cents. Take care of yourself.
ReplyDeletelaurie,
DeleteThink so, too. Thanks.
I remember the bad teachers just as well as the good ones.
ReplyDeleteThe HS English teacher who said I had a bad attitude and couldn't write (I went on to get a degree in scientific & technical writing) but fawned over a peer who couldn't write her way out of a paper bag (she was a suckup extraordinaire, so...)
My favorite professor was also my academic advisor. He was a brilliant man and I learned so much from him. He also had a wicked sense of humor and we would trade banter on the reg. He's still alive and kicking, but I will be sad to learn when his light has stopped shining.
I'm worried to hear you're not feeling well, Linda. Seems they should be keeping closer tabs on you after that hospitalization. I can't believe they don't want a follow-up for 6 months!
Sue,
DeleteMy English teacher senior year hated me. She did not think I could write, either. Hated her, too. All other English teachers liked me until I got to horrible lit teacher in college. She liked the suckup students, not me.
Cannot believe it is six months!
