I Was Sooo Wrong!

For years I thought I was allergic to coconut. Even though I ate it in candy, cookies, and cake, I was just so sure. Why?

After I divorced, a female friend bought over the fixings for pina coladas minus liquor. All summer, the kids and I drank these. I broke out in huge craters all over my face. Since I had eaten more pineapple than coconut during my life, I thought the coconut milk was the culprit.

NOPE!

Pineapple is the allergen. Now, I have no intention of ever giving up pineapple, I will never have so much juice everyday as I did back then. This is one allergen that I do eat in moderation, so I will continue since the craters on my face that one time were the only problems I ever had.

Pina Coladas are off my list of foods I will eat, virgin or not. I will still consume pineapple sandwiches since I only eat those one every two or three months and have absolutely no reaction. However, even a pineapple binge has never really affected me.

This news is just too weird.

By the way, someone told me there was no beef in something I ate. YES, there was. So, I am suffering.

While we are on the subject of food, I went to Publix today looking for a butternut squash as there were none at the farmer's market and the ones at WM were sad. The cook was making Tangy Ginger Pork and Autumn Rice from the post yesterday. Be still my heart!

She was chopping sage. I commented that I would use dried ground sage. She picked up a sheet of paper and turned it over, saying that I should use one teaspoon. AND, she showed me the frozen, diced butternut squash she used. I bought a knob of ginger instead of buying the ginger paste. She said that substitute was on the list, too.

She also had a freezer case and a section where a person could buy everything used in the recipes she cooks. That's a great idea.

Your turn
What have you eaten lately that is delicious? Did you cook it? What are your seasonal food favorites? My seasonal food favorite is pumpkin pie or pumpkin bread. You could sub sweet potatoes in these pumpkin dishes. Okay, Halloween candy, too.

  1. I made carnitas Sunday and we had the leftovers last night. It is insanely delicious. But the best food I ever ate was fish from a Peruvian restaurant in Portland (Adina's if I remember the name correctly) or Picadillo empanadas from The Columbia in Ybor City in Tampa. ( We have been to a couple of other Columbia's and though they are good the one in Ybor City is by far the best.

  2. It stinks to find even more things that you are allergic too. Sorry!

    1. Sonya Ann,
It does indeed stink. But, that beats everyone thinking I am picky. And, it is certainly better than the consquences of eating things that make me ill and wondering why I am in so much pain and gastic upset.

Actually, I have sat and eaten half a pineapple because I could. However, eating it every day might cause me a problem.

I still have a list of things I think cause me problems.

  3. Wow, what a revelation. Glad you discovered the real culprit! I've been fortunate to not be allergic to anything and can enjoy anything.

    1. Leigh,
I actually did not know I was allergic to any food until the esophagus problems. And, I ate most anything I wanted until this year. This is a brand-new discovery for me.

  4. I'm sorry that pineapple is on your list, too. However, I wanted to ask you about pineapple sandwiches - explain, please, it sounds intriguing!

    1. Tina,
Thanks. I put Miracle Whip on two slices of bread. Then, I put all the pineapple I can get onto one slice and top it with the other slice. It is a Southern thing. I put two slices of pineapple or more by cutting the slices in half. Chunks or tidbits or crushed work, too. Just make sure you drain any of the pineapple well and sometimes mash with napkin or paper towel. If you hate Miracle Whip, you might want to use Mayo.

  6. My mother in law used to make a dish she called it pineapple salad. IT Was 2 slices of canned pineapple laid on a lettuce leaf one ring was cut and strung through the first ring like making the number 8, Next it received a big dollop of mayonnaise or MW and lastly she shredded some cheddar cheese on top of the mayo. It actually was pretty tasty!

    1. Janet,
My mother made that too, minus the two rings. I loved it. She did it with pears, too.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
