Big Cat in the County?

cougar

Oh, rats! This will keep me in at night! A few years ago, a woman called the police twice, saying she had seen a Bengal tiger. Just in case she was right, I did not leave my house after dark for two months. I felt suffocated living this way.

After the two dogs attacking me, I am nervous going out at night. Then, this!

Your turn
Do you live in an area where wild animals regularly roam? Does it keep you on your toes or armed when you leave your home--just to go on your property or to the car to leave?

  1. No animals wilder than people in our area. And I do go out at night - with care.

    1. EC, I am always circumspect in my nighttime visit to WM. There was a spell when there was a guy who tried to get in people's homes. He was not very good at it, but he was finally caught. It turned out he was a friendly drunk, but, nevertheless scary.

  2. We get foxes. They are feral and not dangerous to people, I think, but I'd rather them than some of the critters you get there.

We do have cougars/panthers/ whatever roaming in the bush but most people say they don't exist. I know *something* is out there because I have seen it. A big black cat as high as my car bonnet, long catlike tail and fast.. Son has seen *something* when out in the bush hunting and his dogs have whined and wouldn't get off the car...Animals can always be where they aren't supposed to be.
Nighttime is inside time, just sayin'!

    1. Barb,
That sounds like a panther! When a dog whines and won't get out of the car, I would get back into the car myself!!! I do believe the people in the article. However, the fake pictures do disprove the other "sightings." I prefer to go out after midnight to shop at WM--less traffic = less gas used; less people = easier to find handicapped parking; less people = easier to find an electric cart = less people in the aisles. Of course, WM for groceries is the only place all this helps.

After my sister was attacked as she was opening her door one night, she said she wants to be indoors and in her pajamas when it gets dark.

  3. We have fruit rats, bobcats, coyotes, & armadillos at night that I have seen. The only one that I'm afraid of - coyotes. Not in our neighborhood but just south of us they have been known to grab small dogs being walked at night. Personally, I stay in at night just because I feel safer. Going to Walmart at night probably is safer than in the daytime - have never read of a robbery at local Walmarts between 10pm - 10am.

    1. Bellen,
I just don't worry about crime in this town in daylight. However, there are so few people in the parking lot at night, that I do feel that someone might accost me, so I am hyper-aware at night of people.

In my neighborhood, I am afraid of animals at night. Of course, in the daytime there are animals/pets because people don't think the leash laws apply to them or their animals.

  4. The people scare me more than the animals. We have shootings, stabbings and we had a 40 person gang fight a few years ago about 4 miles from here.

    1. Sonya Ann,
I have almost gotten over being afraid of people. However, I live in a fairly peaceful town and in a peaceful area of town. A 40 person fight would make me antsy for a long time.

  5. We have possum, skunk, rabbits, raccoons that run through our yard at night. There is a creek a block down where ducks, skunks, raccoons, mountain lions have been seen. About a mile away there were several mountain lion attacks on people. There are also lots of loose dogs and the occasional coyote around. I never worry

    1. I do carry pepper spray and a stun gun after dark, just in case.

    2. Patti,
You are braver than I am! mountain lions and dog packs would really bother me. But, if I were armed with anything, I would feel more secure.

  6. We get a fair amount of wildlife here but nothing too scary. I'm not that keen on the bats that fly around outside the back door when I put the rubbish out in the bins. :D

  7. Snakes and unleashed dogs seem to be my challenge around here! But once, when I lived in the hills o' WV, I heard a roar that sounded like a lion one dark night. No joke. They used to argue about whether or not there were mountain lions still running about in WV. My vote is yes.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
