Thanksgiving Dinner, Finally

Dinner +cranberry sauce and deviled eggs

I forgot to put the deviled eggs and cranberry sauce on the plate because exbf likes neither, so I had to go back and get those for me. Starting from the corn and going clockwise: corn; dressing, gravy, and chicken; green bean casserole; sweet potato; field peas and snaps.

Although I had cooked a turkey and chicken breasts last week, I ended up just having the chicken. It was still uneaten and the turkey breast was frozen. I used the broth from the turkey, but our meat was chicken. Exbf was okay with that.

Since the chicken breast is gone now, I will thaw turkey for the leftovers of gravy and dressing.

Patsy Cline's eggs are small

Cornbread that looked great but tasted off

For all my childhood and adulthood, for that matter, this same Jello salad was on our table for holidays. Mama used Black Cherry Jello and Strawberry Banana Jello. two cans of fruit cocktail, plus loads of bananas and Delicious Apples. This delicious dish was always served in her bowl shaped like an apple. The bowl was used for nothing else, and the Jello salad was never served in anything else. I have prepared this myself since the year my mother died. It is necessary to my mental health, plus it is delicious.

Steaming giblet gravy

My giblet gravy has no giblets. I just cannot bear to dice them up. Yuck. Besides, the chickens loved them. I do regret not putting the neck meat in because neck meat is the most delicious meat on a turkey.

I do dice boiled eggs for the gravy. Those are mandatory. Do you ever put diced boiled eggs in your Thanksgiving gravy? For people who are grossed out by eggs in gravy, I use a fork and mash then to smithereens. YUM!

dressing

Everything tasted off today, with nothing tasting like I had cooked it. I must be taking medicine that is causing this.

Usually, my mother made candied yams that were delicious. I had these sweet potatoes baked, so I ate those. She never made green bean casserole, but we had green beans. Actually, this is the first time I have had green bean casserole for Thanksgiving instead of green beans. I don't think I will make it again for Thanksgiving. I always made succotash, but today it was just corn with no Lima beans.

Mama never served corn. She served mashed potatoes. After all, the gravy needs potatoes! Now, I sort of wish I had made mashed potatoes, too. Mama served all our Thanksgiving desires, things we wanted her to serve, along with the traditional things.

Your turn
Is there anyone who did not have their Thanksgiving meal on Thursday? Is there something like the Jello salad that is really not part of most Thanksgiving meals that is necessary for your holiday meal? Who puts diced boiled eggs in giblet gravy?

  1. The eggs in giblet gravy must be a southern thing. My mother always made her gravy that way. I don't do it that way but I certainly am not opposed to it. Many of my guests don''t eat gravy,

    1. Janet,
I do think it is a Southern thing. Exbf does not eat gravy. So, it is all mine! I love gravy but rarely make it or eat it. I probably have not made gravy since last Christmas. When I am ill, I crave gravy and don't know why. Mama would never have given gravy to an ill child.

  2. No Thanksgiving here. My Christmas dinner is decidedly non traditional. I make a huge bowl of fruit salad and live on it for days. My partner gets chicken/turkey and all the trimmings but a) I am a vegetarian and b) it is tooooo hot.

    1. EC,
That fruit salad sounds good and cool. I would hate to be making all this in warm weather. So, I can see that part of it.

  3. We cannot have Thanksgiving dinner without smoked salmon as an appetizer. Also, dessert must be cheesecake, baked the night before. And finally, husband LOOOOOOVES store bought brown and serve rolls. He always buys a package, and until this year, I always forgot to warm them. This year, I remembered to put them in the oven as I made gravy, but forgot to take them out until I smelled them burning. I think forgetting the rolls one way or another is a tradition!

Your meal sounds great. I think boiled eggs in gravy would help with texture. This Yankee may just have to give it a try for Christmas.

    1. Those brown and serve rolls are great. They are sort of like dessert to me. Your roll tradition is unusual, to say the least. One day, you will get it. Let me know if you put eggs in the gravy at Christmas. I put four boiled eggs, diced small, into about a quart of gravy. Some neck meat is great too if you don't want to put in giblets or if you do.

    2. Okay, that was not a quart of gravy! Oh, about the roll tradition being unusual--I meant forget them or scorch them, not the having of them. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Egg gravy IS a southern thing. Sometimes my mom would but eggs in hers but not always. Tradition in my family was always rutabagas(orange turnips to you non-Southerners), Pumpkin and Pecan Pies and my Great Aunt Ollie's Potato Rolls. I have continued all but the Pecan pie, which I just make at Christmas instead.
This year is the 3rd year since I left home I haven't had/made Aunt Ollie's Rolls-2 years we ate out and this year just not enough people here to justify making them(lots of work and makes a TON!lol)so I just used 2 cans of pre-made crescent rolls I had in the fridge.
We all survived it so it's all good. ;-)

    1. slugmama,
LOL...orange turnips. I did not get pumpkin pies made, but I will next week since I have crusts I bought. Those potato rolls must be special! Have you ever published that recipe on your blog?

It is always interesting to see what traditions people hold dear.

  5. I celebrated Thanksgiving Day with my BF's family (first Thanksgiving together). Tomorrow (Sunday) I'll be cooking for me, BF, my Dad, & my grandma. The BF is in charge of smoking the turkey at his store, and I'll be making sides: mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, deviled eggs, cranberry sauce, white gravy, stuffing, Hawaiian rolls, chocolate covered pretzels, & cheesecake. Grandma is bringing pumpkin pecan pie for the men.

    1. tlc,
I am glad things are going well for you. I like having more than one Thanksgiving. Did you mean "pumpkin pecan pie"? If so, I need that recipe. Your menu sounds good, especially since you are relieved of turkey duty.

  6. Joe insisted we go to a restaurant, but they were ridiculously crowded. The one we stopped at said HOME COOKING. The turkey was cold sliced. The dressing was bread in hoy water. No flavoring...which is home cooking in Florida. We gagged down the canned YAMS...No sugar or butter, paid the bill and left full plates on the table.

Southern cooking does not extend to Florida.

    1. I meant HOT water. I don't know what hoy water is. Lol

    2. Lotta joy,
I figured out the hoy part. Florida is not part of the South, except for the panhandle. All Southerners know that. You learned the hard way. Canned yams are canned sweet potatoes, just renamed so they sound more Southern. Only African markets have real yams. I make great candied sweet potatoes from those canned things. Come to my house next year for real Southern cooking.

  7. If we have Thanksgiving here, we always have fruit salad in whipped cream with mini-marshmallows. Always have cornbread stuffing. We had Thanksgiving with the in-laws and I only had to bring the cranberries. But we are doing our own tomorrow - Turkey, gravy, cornbread stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberries. I will probably skip the fruit salad as there are no going to be many here and it doesn't keep well, but we'll have it for Christmas.

Please explain the exbf thing. I am missing something.

    1. Jane,
Exbf and I dated for two years. He has never been married and thinks any difference of opinion or argument means things are not right. So, he said he did not want to be my bf any longer, but he would still come and help me with things I could not do...five or six years ago. He remarked last summer that he really did not plan to stay around so long. LOL But, my back gets worse all the time. And, I really do need him for a few things. The only thing that has changed is no bedroom time. I know; it's strange and complicated.

    2. As long as you are happy with the arrangement, that is all that matters. But I couldn't figure out why an ex would be around all the time. :)

    3. Jane,
Only once a week is he here. I need the help, and he knows it. So, we muddle along. He gets plenty of food, cooked and sometimes in a dinner plate with tight lid for work the next day. I would never find anyone else to care for me as long as I appear needy!

  8. It's interesting that you make Jello salad the way your mom always did. My mother always made it; I don't. I don't care for gravy and never make it. Willy Dunne Wooters and I enjoyed our feast on Thursday. Yesterday we had turkey with my homemade rolls. Then in the evening we had leftover pumpkin pie (for Willy) and apple pie (for me).

    Love,
    Janie

    1. I make the dressing, gravy, candied sweet potatoes, and pumpkin pie just like she did. I liked the way she cooked and just got her recipes by cooking with her or asking her for the recipes. I guess I have a dozen or more things I make just like she did.

It sounds like a good feast. And, the day after sounds great, too. I would go for the pumpkin pie, too.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
