What Was in My Nightgown?

As I sat on my bed ready to lie down to sleep, I felt like something was crawling on me. I looked down my nightgown to see a long black something crawling right up the middle of my body. It was still near my panties but making time up my body.

I jumped, screamed, flopped around my nightgown and generally went ballistic over this interloper. Without my glasses, I could only see a black blob with no idea what it was.

When I looked in my nightgown again, the bug was still crawling on my stomach, crawling between my breasts. This time, I shrieked again, shook my nightgown as I ripped it over my head. I was wiping my body to make sure it was gone. I shook my nightgown, turning it inside out to check for the bug.

When I put my nightgown on and sat cross-legged on the bed, I felt it crawling between my legs.  You just know this set off more thrashing, swiping, and screaming. I looked everywhere. The carpet is too dark to see anything. I flopped the sheets and re flopped them. OKAY, this is a good reason for liking white sheets! Nothing can sneak up on me.

Can you guess how hard it was to go to sleep when every two minutes I felt this bug crawling at various places. Lights go on, body examined, sheets flopped more, nightgown examined--such a horror. Finally, at 6:30 am, I passed out from exhaustion.

This bug was about an inch long. It had a hard body like a beetle. It has two very slender segments and snaps and is propelled out of danger. I just calling them a snapping beetle, but know that is not the name. Do you know its name?

Whew! What a night!

If exbf ever hears me shriek, no matter where I am, he asks, "What kind of bug was it?"

I don't like bugs anywhere on me, but in the house and in my nightgown is terrifying. I don't usually have so much trouble getting away from a bug!

Your turn
Do you react with shrieking over bugs on you? How about bugs in your nightgown?

  1. The first night we spent here in Alabama there was a giant bug (roach?) in the house. I screamed! My hubby sprays Ortho home defense around the foundation of the house often to ensure that we don't have that problem, but occasionally, one gets in and everyone knows it because they hear me screaming. I hate bugs!

    1. Lorraine,
I laughed loud and long at your comment. Exbf was once genuinely concerned, thinking tragedy had befallen me.

Those large roaches are almost impossible to keep out of the house, so killing them outdoors seems to be the only way to be rid of them.

My friend who has plenty of money for any treatment continually fights keeping them out. Of course, he has pine chips around his house.

The smaller, brown roaches are German cockroaches and want to live inside exclusively.

      I hate roaches.

    2. I found an old post of mine about a bug in the house when I was living in PA. We had some nasty ones there too! http://clamco.blogspot.com/2012/04/bugs-i-hate-em-part-2.html

    3. Lorraine,
I copied and pasted that link and got a dozen bug stories, but not yours. I still want to read it.

  3. I am not terribly afraid of bugs. The gigantic cockroaches live outside, but like to come in for a visit every once and awhile. I keep a little homemade spray of dishwashing liquid, water and peppermint oil and give them a little shower when I see them (Usually by the doors) Later in the evening I find their crunchy dead bodies and sweep them up. I don't mind them in the yard (they love hanging out under all the pine trees) I just don't want them to come visiting inside.

    1. Anne,
Only if a bug is on me or about to get on me do I scream. The big outdoor roaches have managed to get to the kitchen, not near a door. I tried to step on one, but it could run faster than I could hobble. I think they may have come in under the sink, via the basement. I have two roach killers out and am about to put out borax. No, no visiting.

  4. I am not too bothered by bugs on the whole. I don't like them crawling on me though. And sadly the bitey ones LOVE me.

Well, of course the bitey ones love you...and me, too.

  5. Oh my God and you never caught it? That gives me the creeps just reading it. We are having a terrible problem with ticks this year. Makes me do the watusi every time I feel something crawling.

    1. carol,
No, to my horror, I could not find it. So, I kept thinking I found it and got up. I know, I don't like to think something is on me.

  6. Double stick tape around your mattress might help. Then you look like a little mountain in the middle of your bed with all your blankets and sheet circling you. As long as they don't repel down on you from the ceiling. Seems like bugs always have a way to get to you. Good luck.

    1. tana50,

Why didn't I think of that? lol I don't want to get a label of the crazy old lady! Actually, the next day a worm descended from the ceiling to within six inches of my face. He was green. That alarmed me, but I just knocked him away...no screaming.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
