Blogger thinks the post would look better with the picture off to the left. ???
I won this from Two Men and a Little Farm. I don't know what
I expected, but this little book is very pretty and green to be all about
brown compost.

Thank you for the chance to win, 1st Man and 2nd Man.

 Your turn
Who composts? Who is going to learn to compost?
Have you ever thought you had a compost failure?

  1. I have a compost pile. Some years it takes longer to brak down than others. One of my kids had an earthworm compost bin. That was fun. He ended yo putting the worms in the big compost, because he felt there were too many and that they should have space to move around, lol.

  2. Yes I have had a failure. It was a pile to which we added household garbage. (meaning eggshells ,vegetables etc.) We had a lot of grass clippings and leaves and much less household stuff. It was heavy to turn regularly and my husband was not really interested in it. We found the water we applied regularly didn't penetrate to the center of the pile. We live in California so no rain most of the year. We finally gave up, and put the pile in the green garbage after a couple of years.

    1. Kristine,
I have not read the book, but it needed water. I know about your drought, but your husband/sons/men could have easily watered it for you...lol. In my opinion, it was salvageable or okay like it was.

    1. Lynda,
I like that answer since it jives with my opinion.

  4. In Indiana, we had a huge compost pile behind the shed. (re: antique outhouse) and I loved it. My flower garden was the shock and awe of the neighborhood. Compost is pure gold......and garbage.....but, hey, it works. I never got over the heat in the center. Unbelievable.

    1. lotta joy,
I like your shed. Those must have been happy flowers besides pretty. Yes, the heat is amazing. Have you ever seen a steaming pile of manure that covers 1/4 acre. Catching fire is awesome.

  5. The Hurricane has a worm compost bin. It makes her happy. I don't compost. I don't want a bin with worms and I can't put a pile of stuff in the yard because it would attract rats. I think you know entirely too much about having rats.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Janie,
I have had compost around here for about five years and never had rats before. So, I don't know. Probably, I would kill the worms. Where does she have her bin?

    2. I think it's right outside the front door of her apartment. It's a small bin. She just wants the dirt for her plants, and I think she enjoys posting photos of the worms on Facebook.

    3. Janie,
That is funny and cute and very ingenious to put it outdoors even though it is outside the apartment front door.

  6. My compost has always been a failure! This year we had chicken manure from our meat birds to add to it and Renoman brought home bags of maple leaves from work. I keep hoping that some day it will click and be successful. :-) Congratulations on your win!

    1. Sue,
Thanks. I need to read it soon. I doubt your compost is a failure, just not what you want.

There is a book called "Let it Rot." If it rots, it is compost. Right?

    2. I'll be singing, 'Let it rot, let it rot, let it rot', to the tune of the Christmas song, Let it Snow. Haha! Thanks for the encouragement and the book title.

    3. Sue,
I will be singing right along with you.

  7. I used to compost until Mama bear kept playing in it. She would lift the whole container, scrape out the goodies for her cubs and then gently set it back down. I only knew it was here because of the huge paw prints on the top.

    1. Patti,
Oh my! A bear that close to the house would be frightening. At least she was teaching her babies to be neat. I am glad she did not harm to you or your pets or family. OR your property.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
