Frigid, Wet and Lunch

lunch today

Today is the 4th Tuesday and the lunch at Grace Café in the Grace Episcopal Church. Yes, there is a lot of butter on those potatoes. I could not finish all this, so brought it home for an encore this afternoon. Okay, I confess: I had two pieces of cake as I waited since I arrived very early. Red Velvet Cake is irresistible.

The visit during lunch with my author-friend, Fred, was a catchup session. I had to avoid a soul-sucking woman acquaintance since she does not know how to make small-talk and monopolizes all conversation with tales of past abuse. My friend Jean was funny as usual.

I collected scraps from plates and brought home a plate with two inches of the same thing I ate. People clearing the tables figured out what I was doing and brought plates to me. That was thoughtful of them. There are about six church crews to do all the jobs. One group buses the tables. Another brings more tea around. Of course, there was music from guitars while we ate.

Thelma loved their meal I brought. Patsy Cline just fretted to escape the pen. As long as I watched, she tried to get through the fence. I needed a nap, so they did not get out in the rain and cold today. I only brought one roll in their plate since I don't like their eating too much white bread. Half their plate was green beans, something they love.

It has been very cold and wet here, inside and out! Tomorrow, snow is forecast, just a dusting. Who knows?--could be six inches.

The grasshopper is catatonic and still on the curtain. I forgot to take him to visit the hens.

My life is just so exciting--on the edge of your seat, nail-biting, heart-racing exhilarating.

Your turn
Are you getting wet stuff or solid white stuff now? Have you had a pre-Thanksgiving meal that is a forerunner of what's to come on Thursday?

  1. Unfortunately here we are getting the white stuff...we have gotten about 3 inches today, but supposed to get more tonight. Thank heavens today was my last work day of the week (one advantage of working in a school).....tomorrow I get to bake birthday cakes for Thursday (celebrating my nieces 9th b-day which was Monday, and my daughter's 7th birthday which is on Thanksgiving Day this year).

    1. Rachel,
That's a lot of cakes. I suppose they can stand in for Thanksgiving desserts, too. I read and was amazed you made your first cake from scratch. I have always made cakes from scratch, but as I get older, I give in to the boxed cake mixes, especially as they are usually given to me.

Working for a school is great because of the schedules.

  2. On the other side of the world we are lurching into summer far too quickly. Hot, and getting hotter. Bush fires already. Scary times.
We don't celebrate Thanksgiving here - but have a great one.
PS: Did you get my email?

  3. EC,
Yes, we are always at the opposite end of summer as you are. I will enjoy the food, but company is what I crave. Your email? Don't think so. Can you send it again?

  4. We are under "lake effect" snow warnings. I'm very happy about that as that means plenty of cross country skiing.
Your meal looked tasty-glad the "girls" got to share.
Stay warm! And Happy Thanksgiving a day early!

    1. They did not like the mashed potato, probably boxed, probably should not have eaten them myself. Happy Thanksgiving to you.

  5. Our weather should be good....perhaps in the 70's. Even though our weather is good our hearts are heavy. One family member is in ICU with little hope of recovery and one of my very best friends on this earth had a very poor pathological report after her recent surgery. This will be our first Thanksgiving since our daughter died and also the first holiday without our grandchildren since their mother moved them out of state....

A lot SUCKS but we also have so much more in our lives to be thankful for. For the most part we are fat and sassy! We will have people that we love and plenty of food at out table. While it is tempting to just lay down in the floor and listen to sad country western music we will resist that impulse. We will eat too much, play some board games and love the ones we are with.

    1. Janet,
I have spent two Thanksgiving days in the far past with friends in the hospital with no hope of recovery. That's hard. There will be no one here and probably not much cooked. I never meet anyone who will play board games! Sounds like fun and warm!

  6. Looks like a yummy meal. Do a lot of churches in the area offer free meals around the holiday (and all year round)? Nice they saved you leftovers.

No snow here yet, but it's COLD. 16 degrees right now.

    1. tlc,
It was good as far as those meals go. This town does nothing on Thanksgiving. As one said years ago when I volunteered to help, "We have our own families on Thanksgiving." cold town

      We got no snow.

    1. 29 F here, no rain, never got snow, very dry now. Yeah, wind and rain are not pleasant together.

  8. Red velvet cake is irresistible. I haven't had a pre-Thanksgiving feast. I'm going to roast a small turkey tomorrow for Willy Dunne Wooters and me. It rained yesterday and now it's chilly, but not cold enough for snow, of course. I wish you a blessed Thanksgiving.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Janie,
I had had one piece of cake that day, but, like you say, red velvet cake is irresistible. I have frozen turkey breast in the freezer, but since I also have chicken breast in the refrigerator, I am not going to thaw turkey. It's below freezing now, no snow, no precipitation at all. Thanks. I hope you have a good Thanksgiving, too.

  9. I haven't eaten all week so I can gorge on Thanksgiving dinner and make my family ashamed....not really; I have eaten, but not what I want.

    Happy Thanksgiving!

That's a plan if dinner does not make you ill...lol. Maybe you will get what you really want and enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. Thanks.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
