Sunday Surprises: grapes, grasshopper, gift

grapes I did not know I had

Saturday, I was driving home past my retaining wall. A woman walking stopped and started eating something. I stopped and asked her if I could help her. She said, "No, I am just eating grapes. They are delicious." I said, "Yes, I love them."  As she continued, I said, "Those are my grapes. That is my yard." The  poor woman jumped so hard and bent with her hands over her face. I was almost sorry I frightened her so. She apologized profusely. I assured her that a few grapes were fine, but I did not want people picking them all.

My grapes on the arbor are scuppernong. They are bronze when ripe. So, these puzzled me. Later, I parked by the retaining wall and took the picture and gathered a few grapes. At first, I thought they were volunteer muscadine because of the color.

But, they are what people call "old fashioned grapes." I have a vine in the yard but never see ripe grapes. No one can give me another name. I picked and ate about a dozen. No more are ripe. There won't be enough to make jam. But, they will be a nice snack occasionally. Have you ever heard of grapes called "old fashioned grapes"?

UPDATE: YES, I know that stuff hanging over into the street is fair game. I did not tell her to stop, just frightened her. People walk by and get the honeysuckle, grapes, take cuttings of the wisteria. I never mind, except for the one person who ate the scuppernongs, took some home, and called me to tell me she did it. ???

He was huge! 3 inches!

I am all for cheap thrills, but this was too much. This huge grasshopper was on my car near the door opening of the front driver door of my car. My arms were full; the sun was hot; I was stressed. Now, I am not afraid of a grasshopper, but I was just positive it would hop in the car and then on me when I was driving. I will react badly if one lands on me. Yes, the car needs washing! When are you coming to wash it?

Scunci foam rollers

Janet said she was sending me something. I just could not imagine what! Imagine my surprise and pleasure when I opened a fat, soft envelope. Yes, I was guessing or trying to guess as I brought it into the house. These are so expensive when new. I will prepare them a shampoo bath and rinse. Then, they can hang in a lingerie bag to dry. I will definitely use these. Some look as though they have never been out of the little zipper bag. I hastily counted 46 rollers and suspect there are or were 48. Thanks!

Your turn
Have you found surprises growing in your yard? Edible ones? Would you use rollers from the thrift store that looked clean and new?

  1. I laughed out loud at your bug. When I looked at the picture I didn't realize it was a car, and I thought to myself 'I wish my stove were that clean'. I'd have to move the bug, wash the stove, put the bug back and then snap an 'impromptu' photo. So when you wrote "Yes, the car needs washing! When are you coming to wash it?" I nearly spewed tea all over my computer.

Congrats on the grapes! They look delicious.

I don't use rollers anymore, but if I did, coming from a thrift store wouldn't bother me. Nits can only live 10 days without a host, and I don't know of anything else to worry about with hair products.

  2. Wendy,
Ha, I wish MY stove were that clean, too. Sorry about the nearly-spewn tea.

Maybe the grapes are worthy of trying to propagate. I'm going to have a better look from inside the yard.

The only thing I would worry about is oil from someone's hair.

Back to your tea; you are safe.

  3. I didn't know that one cluster of grapes could have so many different colors. I can just picture you, standing out there stuffing grapes in your mouth so that woman wouldn't get them. lol

  5. lotta,
Sometimes when grapes ripen, they do not all ripen at once. Actually, that is the usual way they ripen. I did not chase the woman off and eat them. I came out hours later.

Actually, those grapes were fair game. There is nothing I can do about people eating them. They are hanging over the curb.

I hope to get this vine and grow more.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
