Homemade Mosquito Trap

Since  I have seen mosquitoes as early as two weeks ago, this information I found is none too early. I will make these by the gross!

The amounts are converted here for ingredients. This is close, but I don't think it is too far off to negatively effect the outcome--trapping mosquitoes.

1 cup warm water
1/3 cup brown sugar
1/4 heaping tsp yeast

A suggestion from me: tape around the top of both bottles to secure them. Mosquitoes can squeeze into tiny places even if they cannot find their way out of the huge opening of the bottle top.

This will be exciting if I can trap a few that want to feed from me. I think I will secure one in the car, too.

Dengue fever, spread by mosquiteos is reported in the Southern US. I read a post about making a mosquito trap and cannot remember where. If you know, I will refer everyone the site.

Your turn
Have you ever had a commercial or homemade mosquito trap? Did yours work? Did I get the conversions close enough?

  1. I have seen glass traps such as this. I thought they were for wasps and flies. Mosquitoes aren't a huge problem here. We do have them but are nothing like in the South. I have more of a problem with flies. I may give this a try!

    1. I think the glass ones are just fancy ones that are specific to the type insect they trap. Mosquitoes are drawn to our breath, the carbon dioxide we exhale. So, it won't work for flies. Put a piece of meat in it to trap flies--no sugar or yeast or water. In the South we need traps for everything.

  2. I'm curious about where you place these...I have an open air back porch, not too large, maybe 20 by 15 feet. We usually have dinners there in the summertime. I wonder if it would be better to place these in the YARD somewhere, instead of on the porch? Great blog, btw - found you via Feral Homemaking :)

    1. FF,
I was thinking and wondering the same thing. If I were eating on the porch, I would place these around the porch and waaay out in the yard, too.

Thank you FF. I will have to visit your blog. Feral Homemaking is a great blog that I read regularly.

  3. The diseases mosquitoes carry are a serious matter. Everyone must be vigilant in keeping their homes mosquito-free. What you shared with us is truly helpful. This mosquito trap is easy to do, cheap, and is effective since mosquitoes love the sweet scent of sugar. These days, one can never be too careful, so it's a must to always come prepared. Thank you, Linda!

  4. Maurine,
I do try for mosquito-free. I think I need one for the car!

  5. I’m not exactly sure how that works. Do they get trapped by the water-yeast mixture or just get trapped in the bottle because they can’t see where they’ll go out? Then again, it’s simple enough to do. I might give it a try and put it outside the patio so I don’t get eaten alive whenever I hang out there.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
