Saturday Cows

this calf was very much interested in my presence

I had the occasion to drive out in the country. Lots of cows were ALL lying in a field. Why, I wondered, do cows lie down? It was a beautiful, sunny, cold day. As I drove back into town, some of the cows were standing.

Not only were they not lying down, some had wandered away. I felt very peaceful sitting in the driveway for a few minutes, just looking at cows.
Why do cows lie down? Are they tired? Don't laugh.

  1. My Daddy used to say if the cows were lying down the fish weren't biting!bahahahaha... He never did tell me what it meant if some were lying down and some were standing!

My goats lie down late morning and then again in the very heat of the afternoon. I think it may have something to do with their grazing and browsing. In the mornings the grass and leaves are full of moisture, just like our vegetables that we're told to pick early in the morning. They are at their highest moisture content. As the sun gets warmer the moisture goes back down into the root area. This is my best guess at any rate.

    1. Mama Bear,
It was about 11 am on a cold, windy day after an evening and night of hard rain. Maybe they were full of whatever they eat. ??? The ground had to be wet still. If it were hot, I might have guessed they sat because it would be cooler than standing around. Cows do lie under trees when it is torrid around here. I would like to just sit and watch cows like I can sit and watch my two hens.

I at for fifteen minutes, fiddling with this blogger to get into the comments. Sometimes, that does not even work.

  2. When The Hurricane was in high school, she had a friend who grew up on a dairy farm. The friend said that cows only lie down when they are pregnant. I have no idea if that's true.

  3. Janie,
Well, then all the cows, even the bull and babies were pregnant. Maybe those bulls came up from someplace else and were not lying there when I drove by. Maybe the babies lie down when Mama does. Maybe it is true. Thanks.
