My Birthday

No, there are no candles. I did not want to burn down the house.
That's right. September 11, 2012, is my 66th  birthday. It was filled with minor surprises and goodies that were small economies. I just talked to my daughter for an hour and a half--whew. I am full of cake and ice cream!

a dozen red roses

There was no ice cream, so I picked up a pint. I do NOT need a gallon of ice cream around here. Milk with suffice with the rest of the cake. Exbf will take some cake home tomorrow. I really need to share it so I won't eat it.

Today, I did nothing of any consequence. But, it was a good day, unlike September 11, 2001, when my daughter in NYC called me screaming in terror. No, I am not comparing my agony to that which was evident in NYC that day. However, the horror my daughter was going through affected me greatly. No one likes a child so far away to be in anguish, wondering if her husband who worked 2 blocks from WTC was dead or alive.

I feel proud and lucky today to live in the US.

Today was a beautiful balmy day in the South, the best kind for a birthday.

Edit: I got a $50 gift card to the grocery store...now, if I had one for gas!

Your turn
Are you enjoying the end of summer with a taste of autumn? You want some chocolate cake with chocolate frosting? Come on down. There is no ice cream.

    1. Sherrie,
Thank you so much. It was a good birthday. Nothing much happened, but it was altogether pleasant. Talking to my daughter makes me happy. She works hard and has a rough time as a single mother. I know she sacrificed to spend 1.5 hours talking. She sent nothing, but that's okay.

  2. It's Wed her but I hope you had a good day. Nice looking cake. I don't need cake but yes please, a small slice would be nice. I don't need the icecream so don't worry about there not being any. That giftcard should come in handy. Buy a treat as well, not just boring ol' food stuff.

It was my younger sisters birthday yesterday. I didn't send her birthday wishes as I don't have her phone number, How sad is that!

Enjoy the rest of your week.

  3. Barb,
The cake tastes as good as it looks. Okay. One slice of cake will be stuffed in an envelope and sent on its way to AU.

I bought the pint of ice cream, bananas to dehydrate that were marked to $0.39/lb instead of $0.69/lb, 11 lbs of chicken on sale for $.99/lb., green grapes on sale for $0.99/lb to freeze, and a gallon of milk. I guess it is all boring, but all needed. The cake and roses were the treat, I suppose.

I never guy kiwis and rarely buy oranges, so I may treat myself to those. This is a grocery store card, so not many treats there. Oh, I did buy cooked, sliced chicken for a salad. That was a treat.

Dinner out, all alone was in the plans, but since I knew I was going to stuff myself on cake and ice cream, and I had salad fizing, I just decided to eat a salad.

And, why don't you have your sister's number...lol. I have had episodes like that--not having a relative's number because I lost it or it was changed.

Thank you. Next year, I think I will declare it my birthday week.

  4. Happy Birthday! Hope you had a great day. Your cake looks yummy. Wow, 66 years. I bet you don't feel a day over 28.

My young niece would say that 66 is a really high number. When my mother-in-law turned 76 my niece said that it was impossible for numbers to go that high. Of course, anything over 20 is a really high number to her. We all get the same comment for our birthdays, no matter what our age. I won't admit to anything over 28 myself. Young tyke tries to make me feel old before my time.

I love your reply to Barb about birthday week. We do that, and sometimes it goes the full month. Friends and family are all over the place, so things get spaced out pretty well. One day its lunch with a friend, weekend party with my husbands family, another lunch and junking with friends and so on. Lets face it, birthdays are great! Your only going to be this age once. Make it special! We also sort of celebrate the day of our birthday every month of the year. So the 21st of every month is my day! Always looking to celebrate a good time :)

  5. Kathy,
Actually, 28 was my best age. How old is your niece? She is funny. Number do go that high...lol.

The week thing is sounding better all the time. AND, the one day a month being yours sounds great!

Every number for ID that I have has a 11 in it. It sort of gives me the chills. I once had a number assigned as an id for a research job--11. It is in ALL IDs I have. How weird is that?

I don't have any family for hundreds of miles. My friends are mostly about 60 nmiles away. They wished me Happy Birthday on FB.

  7. Hi Linda! The cake looks delicious! And those roses are beautiful! Happy late birthday! It was a special day; what does special mean, anyway?

You got a great deal on those chicken breasts! Stores around here hardly ever put them on sale for that price! Great for the bananas too! Do you cook for others, or just yourself? Just wondering since you put up lots of food. Maybe one day your daughter and grandchild will live closer? I know you miss them and they miss you! Blessings from Bama!

  8. Bama Girl,
Take my word--the cake is delicous. I am taking the rest to a dinner tomorrow night once I share some with exbf, who is here right now and helping me.

I wish I had gotten more chicken! I usually buy boneless, skinless for $1.99 or $1.59. You are so close that these sales would make it worth a trip here.

I only cook for me and for exbf when he comes up once a week. He skipped and only came after three weeks this last time. I told him not to drive on Labor Day Friday because of distance and traffic. He lives in Hueytown--7 miles from here. I send food home with him. Lots of food leaves here some days.

He does not cook and helps me so much that it all works out. Wait until you hear what he did today. I will post that tomorrow.

She will never live near me. She is in MYC, divorced, and cannot move for another 8 years because she cannot move her children away from their father. A friend of hers moved to cheaper part of New York to be near her parents. The police came and took her children away because the husband was given custody, permanently because she moved the kids. Soooo...she will be there a long time and will probably move to Texas where her father is if she ever moves.

I eat the food I put up. I try to keep a little cushion in food since I don't have much money--buy cheap now; eat cheap next month when the price is too high.

In order not to eat too much junk food out, I put together a snack each time--banana chips, chocolate chips, pecans. I make it up each little batch for one day because the pecans have to stay frozen. It would get all mushy if It was all frozen and thawed. This way it is finger food. A tupperware bowl works to carry it.

I have reactive hypoglycemia, not diabetes, and my blood sugar plummets, leaving me all weak, so I try to always carry food.

    1. Hi Linda! Thanks for answering my nosy questions! I'm like that sometimes! lol! I like the sounds of the snack you make. Sorry about your hypoglycemia! Glad you know what to do when it gets wacky! Blessings from Bama!

    2. Bama Girl,
Questions are no problem! I gained weight from the hypoglycemia because I wss eating to avoid the blood sugar drop. That did not help. So, I try to take something with me most of the time. Usually, I forget. Thanks.

  9. Sorry I am late but a very happy birthday to you. Sorry I have not commented recently but I have been quite busy and only spent a little time reading blogs. Long enough to read but not reply in my slow way. (I am not a fast typist). Your cake is beautiful. It was my friends birthday at weekend and her sons took her and their families and me out for a meal. It was really nice. I didnt have a dessert (diabetic), but I did allow myself a tiny slice of her cake.

    1. Eileen,
I am a fast typist, but with needing new glasses (ordered), I type awful and fast. Isn't cake a dessert? I had noticed you had not commented but just thought you were busy or I was boring. LOL

    1. Martin and Amy,
I did have a nice birthday, even if it was uneventful. The cake was better than it looked. I will go back and look at the answers. Thanks for visiting and for answering the questions.
