It's So Hot that...

chickens in the shade

...I washed my hair at 6:30 on Wednesday. It is now about 24 hours later. Guess whose hair is still damp 24 hours later. I started sweating as soon as I got out of the shower and have not quit sweating. Sweating is one of the things I do best. Living in the South gives me plenty of occasion to practice sweating. I excel.

Last night, before I went to bed I took a hand towel and wet it with cold water and pulled it across my back and shoulders, then rubbed it over the rest of my body. I could not sleep, so at 5 am, I resorted to the cold towel and went right to sleep.

. . . the chickens refuse even to come out of the shade, even for food. In the picture above, I am on the other side of the clotheslines, calling them. Their mouths are open and wings raised to try and cool themselves. Yes, they have cool water and plenty of shade.

The computer is over-heating, so bye for now.  The low last night was 75 and the high was 94...way too hot for me.

Your turn
How hot did it get at your place? Are you chickens panting? Or dog or cat?

    1. Kristine,
Yikes, you win. Hopefully, the humidity is low where you live. The humidity was 75%, I think.

  2. Now, at 8:40pm it's 88 with lots of thunder. It got up to 94, in the shade, this afternoon. We stay in our AC'd house between 1pm & 7pm unless it is mandatory that we go somewhere (Dr's appts), everything else we fit into the AM hours. I like your use of the wet towel, will have to tell hubby about that - he sweats lots & gets overheated easily.

  3. Bellen,
That is warm! I used cold water and did not wring it very well. It gets the dried sweat off my body and cools me. Plus, getting into my nightgown and in the bed sort of damp allows me to cool off enough to go to sleep. I feel like I have to go out and at least check and make sure the chickens are still on the premises...lol. But, avoiding the warmest part of the day is wise.

  4. Ha! I love hot and humid OUTSIDE, but want cool and dry indoors. Need a dry sub 65 degrees to sleep. In New England, summers were worse than in the south...no a.c. in most houses...that's one read on we rented in a new complex when we lived there.
We generally hit mid 70's on our hottest days in summer here, and it drops to low 50's or high 40's at night. And it's dry. But shush, don't tell anyone. The idea it rains all the time here keeps out the riff raff. We just don't get much sun, but actually do not get much rainfall. When DH could pick his home base, we chose this region as it was a perfect compromise...I can't stand cold snow and ice, he can't bear brutal heat. Rarely do we get the extremes of either here. Stay cool,

    1. Meg,
AC is my friend. However, this tiny ac is not keeping me even near cool. When we visited Rochester, NY where ex was from, no one had ac. I was miserable for a month each year.

Your temps sound perfect for me! The extremes of temp are not for me. But, if I had to choose, I would take heat over ice and snow. My hair is still wet after washing it Tuesday. Of course, it just sweaty now. The heat is going to be worse this coming week.

  5. Bleah. On the other side of the world it is winter - and I am grateful. Very grateful.
My partner's mother used to put their pyjamas in a plastic bag in the freezer for a little before they went to bed. Cool enough to drift off to sleep.

    1. EC,
Maybe I could put my nightgown in the freezer. Enjoy your winter.

  6. Hope your staying cooler.
We bought a curtain rod and curtains for the living room to help keep out the heat. The windows just amplify it. We bought this fabric stuff at Lowes and hung it off the gutters to k ep the sun off the glass door and kitchen window. It has helped!

    1. Michelle,
I planted two trees to keep the sun off the windows on the two sides of the kitchen. The one is a dream come true. However, the tree for the big window just kept falling over, so I had it cut. I need to plant another and get something to go over the windows, too.

    3. Michelle, planting trees will create a cool oasis around the house.

  7. I wish you could send some of that heat my way. It has been an usually wet and cold summer here north of Chicago. I would love to send some of the rain to CA. Its not such a great summer. Sigh.

    1. Sonya Ann,
I would gladly share heat with you and rain with CA! It is feast or famine, flood or drought. One summer, 1977, I believe, the summer was cool, never over 80ish, it rained all the time, thunderstorms every day, no sun to speak of. My three children passed around a virus. We would all be ready to walk out the door when one of them would start throwing up. I always blamed the weather for the health problems.

It is going to be 98 this week. If you can figure out how to get some of this oppressive heat, you are welcome to it. Of course, it is better than the cold.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
