Salmonella in Your Spices?

A variety of spices. Photo: ThinkStock

This is shocking. Not once did I ever think my spices could have salmonella in them. Check out this article for yourself.

Is there anyone as surprised as I? Now, check the source of your spices in the cabinets in your kitchen.

  1. I don't wanna read it. I don't wanna read it. Okay. I'm gonna read it....there's just too many things and too many people you can't trust anymore and I just can't take looking at my spices with the stink-eye on top of everything else. arghh

    1. lotta,
"Trust" is hard. Try not to take it out on the spices. Remember, it is the foreign and cheap spices that most likely are masquerading as pure truth, your best friend.

  2. I'm glad I hardly ever use spices. I've had mine so many years that if they were going to make me sick they would have done it by now.

    Love,

    1. Janie,
Why do you hardly ever use spices? I am not a big spice user, either. That is so true that they would have made you sick by now. I never buy from Indian markets, just from the grocery store. I am looked upon as not being very cosmopolitan. But, whatever! Thanks for being another person who does not use lots of spices and confessing.

    2. I cook very little now that I live alone.

    3. Also, I can't eat things with much of any spices. They upset my stomach horribly.

    4. I have lived alone for a long time and still cook like there is a family most days. I need to smarten up. Some spice are just too much for my allergies.

  3. This is sobering. I almost never use coriander, but I do use poultry seasoning, pepper, Mrs. Dash, Montreal Steak Seasoning and a host of others. I don't like cumin, coriander, curry, and although I love poppyseeds in a creamy salad dressing I make, I read that they can produce a transiently positive blood test for opiates, and so I skip those too now.
We've come a long way from simply fearing that our college roommate used pot in the brownie mix again.

  4. Jane,
Sobering indeed. I use some pepper, summer savory, and Mrs. Dash. In season I use others, but not very often. LOL...never had a roommate that put pot in the brownies that I knew of.

I hear you have to eat gallons of poppy seed to register, but other people I trust, like you, have given poppy seeds up. I prefer not to take a chance.

There is a brand of pepper with an off flavor, so I just buy French's. I want to learn to grow peppercorns, so I can just grind my own pepper.

  5. I use dried spices as if I'm cooking for the Mexican government. Spicy. Some of my spices could be called "heirloom" spices because I've had them since WWII. Imagine my surprise one thanksgiving when I saw white fur growing in my sage.

    1. lotta,
I finally got rid of the "heirloom" spices. I wonder why such huge bottles of sage are sold? Maybe I use a Tbsp. each year. Furry sage would be a problem for me!

  6. I'm totally the opposite. I use tons of spices and buy them in the Health food, Mexican and Middle Eastern Markets in my neighborhood. These places do a brisk market in these items and the spices always seem ultra fresh. Perhaps I should be a little more careful but to tell the truth I'm not worried.

I also eat from street carts in Mexico. I'm not going to say that I have never had a touch of the tourista. I have but it was worth it!

Linda I mailed you a funny little package yesterday.

    1. Janet,
I don't think the freshness is in question. But, I am glad you are having good experiences since you use many spices. I guess we cannot all worry about spices. I will do that...lol.

You do like to live dangerously? Well, I am glad you enjoy the experience of street food.

      Oh, thank you.

  7. I was just trying to say that freshness is the reason that I shop for spices in those places. I had no idea that salmonella could possibly be a problem ....I'm glad that you will take over that worry! LOL Perhaps there are other of life's worries that I could pass on to you too??? Wouldn't that be great if you could let others handle all the "stuff" that keeps us awake nights? LOL!

  8. Janet,
    Got it now!

Okay, I have a few worries. I can pick out a few and pass them on...lol.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
