Interesting Old Clock

I finally got Tommy to get up, fight his way to this clock and read what was on the front. It is Seth Thomas with patent date 1876. Of course, that does not mean this clock is that old. I don't remember ever seeing a clock that told the date. The bottom face is day of month and day of week.

He also has a mantel clock that sits right in front of it since the reindeer needed room to be displayed. Neither work. I think I only show any interest when we need room for the Christmas display.

A clock identical to his, but in mahogany, sold for $250. The one above sold for $1,200.00.  Of course, I don't know the condition of either or the markets where they sold. Maybe I will pursue having these repaired, maybe not. There are other pursuits more important right now. But, I do know Tommy does not want to sell them. I don't blame him.

When I can have a more able-bodied person hand these to me, I can get other information from the back of the clock. In the meantime, I am grateful they don't chime.

Tommy is 71 and remembers these from his maternal grandmother's house when he was young.

Saturday, nothing happened. I only slept three hours on Friday night. Sunday, same thing. Nothing happened. We ate Christmas leftovers both days, so meals were delicious.

It's been mostly messy and gloomy here. We have no ambition or need to go anywhere. So, the gloom is okay.

Cleaner called but she only let the phone ring three times. I was in the midst of cleaning food off my chest! Then, I had to clean nightgown and face and hands and necklace. How can I be so messy??? I think that was my last bite, so by the time I cleaned all off me, I forgot to call her back.

Saturday night, there was tornado talk. We made sure flashlights were close at hand and the batteries were plugged into the lift chairs. Nothing happened here, just some rain. It was bad for some people with some deaths. A very familiar area, the Athens Courthouse was hit by a tornado, which took down a majestic tree. I have never been in the courthouse, just to festivals outdoors.

I will make sausage balls and black-eyed peas for NYE. We will probably have a salad. Maybe I will bake a pumpkin pie that was not made for Christmas. Maybe I will make a healthy dip and call all that dinner.

I would like to go and see fireworks at Thunder on the Mountain. I think that is the name. Fireworks are shot at the Vulcan statue. But, it will be dark.

I have an ot appt here on Monday, but I have no idea if she will show up.

What plans do you have for NYE?

Will you have black-eyed peas?

  1. No black eyed peas here, as I can’t abide the taste. In any case, DH has it in his head that pork is what you eat on NYE, but that’s not getting served either!
I don’t have plans, but neighbor and I have talked about her, her boys (my boys’ friends) and her 12 year old daughter coming over here or me going to her house to “hang out.” If so, we will have alcoholic and soft drinks, and a variety of snacks…nothing fancy.
And how did NYE get here so quickly?????

    1. Meg,
I love them plain, nothing in them or on them. But, I can handle catsup or relish on them. I especially love them with brown rice mixed in, no salt or other flavor.
Your plans sound good and simple.
My thought, too. One more year rolling around so soon?

  2. Yes on the blacked eyed peas - I love them. Those and corned beef and cabbage. Every single year of life. My whole family does the same. Traditions - some are just fun.

    1. Cheryl,
Yes, traditions! I am not one iota superstitious. So, I don't think life will be better for eating BEP's. Traditions have purpose in life.

  3. I have black eyed peas and a baked honey ham bone for new years dinner. Old traditions assed down thru the years. That clock in beautiful!

    1. Belinda,
The bone is cooked in the peas? Sounds delicious. We need our old traditions. That is not Tommy's, just an identical one on the internet.

  4. That is a neat clock. I've never seen one that has a date on it. Looks like it might be worth having repaired. I've never even had black eyed peas, LOL. No New Years traditions here, I have no desire to stay up that late just to say Happy New Year ;)

    1. One,
It chimes on the hour. So, I am in no hurry to repair it. But, for Tommy's sake, I want it whole. I thought everyone had tasted black-eyed peas! I will be up anyway, so not a big deal to stay up. They won't be as good, but they sell BEPs in a can.

  5. We have the traditional NYD meal at home every year, but we go out for dinner every NYE. This year Son2 and DIL2 are joining us.

  6. I called Someone from MI the other day to make sure he gets to the store sooner than later to get him some black eyed peas; he has to have some on 1/1. I haven't had any this year and I did fine.

    1. Jan,
      So do I.
I have never eaten much Indian food, but that sounds good.
      Thanks. Best wishes to you!

  8. We have no plans other than to stay in & stay warm.

Woke up at 7am to a very cold house and both furnaces on lockout. Checked the oil gauge--completely empty! Whaa???? We are on automatic delivery--how could that happen? Called our HVAC/Oil delivery--

"No, we stopped delivering oil last summer, remember? No, we have no idea who we sold your delivery contract to. Maybe XXX. No, I don't have their number, Google it"
    So helpful. NOT.

Checked my files, found a delivery bill from October, got name of new delivery company. Called them and begged for a NYE oil delivery. Inquired why we were not on auto-delivery, they said, "eh, the system is all screwed up since we acquired so many new customers; you're not the only one running dry these days."
Gosh, THANK YOU. Feels much better knowing that others are getting screwed. NOT.

Finally got our delivery; driver asks if he wants us to power up the furnaces. Expecting that there will be problems with clogged jets due to sucking up sludge at the bottom of the oil tank, we say, "Yes, please!" He spends a good 25 min getting both furnaces to fire and maintain burn with no lockout. Tipped him handsomely ($40). Collapsed in the magic of a warm house due to a tank full of oil and two roaring furnaces.

So Happy New Year, indeed! All I want is a nap right now and a big honking cheeseburger for dinner.

PS: I have never had black-eyed peas before. What bean do they taste similar to?

    1. Sue,
What misery to go through! NO, not helpful at all. I am glad you did get a warm house eventually. That would be so miserable.
The delivery guy deserved a good tip. Now, I wish I had a big cheeseburger, too.

BEPs are small and soft. They taste just like BEPs. I like Great Northern Beans and navy beans. I highly dislike kidney beans and pinto beans. So, maybe you can tell from things I like.

Once my older daughter faced BEPs and mournfully said, "I don't think I can eat these eye beans. I explained that those were not eyes. She was more open to eating them and promptly ate them.

  9. PPS: That IS a very interesting old clock. I wonder if it handles leap year?

I would not want to sell it either, but I can see that many other household needs and wants would come before I spent money to repair it...

    1. Sue,
There are other things that need done around here. I really don't want it repaired to chime! We had a mantle clock that was probably the genesis of my sleep problems along with the radio my brother played all night--rock n roll 24/7.

    2. Yes, I wonder how it handles leap year. I need to investigate a few things.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
