My New Chicken

metal chicken planter

I was so excited to find this and then to bring it home. Do you think it is an antique as advertised? It looks like something from Mexico, but I don't know. I saw it and the lady allowed me to bring it home without paying for it. I will return with antiques I have stacked up, things I no longer want. If they want them, which they will, this will be freechicken. You know--like freebird. Not funny? I am feeling punchy.

Today, I kept sending exbf on chores past this. Then, when he did not comment, I went out with him and we looked at Thelma and Louise, Lucy and Ethel. I managed to get him about two feet from the side of this chicken, facing it. Still, he did not see it. Fearing he would fall over it if I led him any closer, I finally showed him. He had no idea it was meant to hold a potted plant. How can a man be so blind to something so large and new?

One way or another, this will be free. I have things to sell. The shop owner might not have paid money for the things I have, but she might trade. If not, I will have plenty of motivation to sell them now that I have my chicken. If only it were a hen.

And, this chicken needs sanding and painting. But, what color? Like a Rhode Island Red or back to white? Shabby Chic may be fine for a while.

Do you like your new yard ornaments free?

Your turn

Just talk to me. I am lonely...lol.

  1. Your wire chicken is really cute. I'd paint it white or leave it as is. I have a black cat metal planter, but I think in the summer, the plants get too hot in there.

What I like about you is the pleasure that you get from simple things, saving a dollar here and there, finding a bargain, we're similar in that way, I think. As well, the health issues...."the old grey mare, she ain't what she used to be"....thank goodness you have someone who helps you out, I don't know what I'd do without my husband.

I hope that you will be able to keep writing for a long, time, I sure enjoy reading your posts.

    1. Anon,
I do find a pleasure in saving even small amounts. He only helps me for about 6 hours every two weeks, so I still end up short of help. But, I am grateful.

Actually, writing is one of the things I can do endlessly at this point. Thanks for the compliments. Keep commenting.

  2. Linda, I think this kind of a chicken is just great. It will never encounter Egg Bound Syndrome ! Best wishes,

    1. Jane,
Plus, I don't have to worry about getting this chicken in at night to protect it.

  3. My mother in law has this same chicken, except hers is painted with a red comb, yellow beak, more of a tan chicken color on the body. There are signs of black paint or primer underneath. The comb is a little different on hers, and there is a natural basket to hide the plastic flower pot. She got hers in the late 1970'-early 1980's (new) at a small floral shop in the neighborhood. It has always sat on top of her fridge with a plant in it.

    1. Kathy,
Thank you for the information on this chicken. There was another one in the shop, slightly different. Okay, maybe this is old. That's good news. This is way too tall and long to fit on a refrigerator, so I assume this chicken had a little brother. I would not mind having a smaller one on the refrigerator.

    2. Linda,
The one on my mother-in-laws double fridge is large. About (guessing, its not in front of me) 2 feet tall maybe 3 feet long. Its the only thing that fits up there. It fills the space with its trailing plant. Her fridge is not built in. Where it sits is out in the open next to an old freestanding china cabinet that goes floor to ceiling. It really looks great against her yellow wallpaper. Also, there are wires that fold down to (I am assuming) push them into the ground for a lawn ornament. She still has the original natural willow basket in hers.

    3. Kathy,
Now that sounds like the size of mine! That must look spectacular. I am impressed and have never seen it. If I ever get a wide refrigerator, I may relocate this one to indoors.

Being indoors has kept the basket intact for such a long time. I will have to look for the place for the spikes to go into the ground. If the other one in the shop, the really rusted one has those spikes, I maybe trade this one. Thanks for the information. If you send me a good picture of the chicken on the freezer, I will put it on my post, now or later. Thanks for these comments.

    1. Anon,
Thank you. Shabby Chic means I don't have to paint if I decide that. Yay for not painting. I am still getting out things I have wanted to sell to make this freechicken.

    1. Sorry folks,
I did not mean to publish that comment. Besides, I do not have that body part to enlarge!
