I Won Three Ribbons at the Fair!

Today was Senior Day at the Fair. I managed to get the closest parking space and only had to walk about 40 feet to get to the closest building, the one art and canning was housed. I found my two blue ribbons and one white on canning and dehydrating. The potholder did not appear to be there at all. There were better ones. So, I probably did not get a ribbon for it.

Next year I will crochet lace edging, maybe make some dolls clothes. We will see. I really did not get to see much because I needed to just get to the car so I could sit.

One of these days, I should wallpaper a wall with the ribbons I have won since I was eight-years-old.

The hens are alive for one more day. I went out tonight and both had put themselves to bed in a Rubbermaid box. So, I won't have to go out into the cold, dark night to save them from themselves. Hopefully, they are trained. Still, I will put hardware cloth around their pen.

Stupid raccoons! I saw a possum ambling along over near the side door, far from the hens.

Your turn
Tell me something interesting, funny, or just plain crazy. Got possums?

  1. I did not know there were possums in Portland when we lived there, but one morning, after taking my girls off to school, I was sitting at the kitchen table looking out the window and a BIG possum walked right across our deck. Scared the living daylights out of me. Never saw another one.

The raccoons in our neighborhood were as big as large dogs. They were terrifying. We had a bunch starting to nest in the corner of our side yard, so we ripped out the yard and put in pavers and thankfully never saw the raccoons again. Coyotes were also photographed in a nearby park. Portland was wilder than most people would imagine.

Congratulations on your winnings! So glad you are posting again.

    1. nomad,
My raccoons are approaching mid-sized dogs. Yours must have be en well-fed. Animal control says I have some of the largest possums they have seen!

People are surprised that I have all these wild animals because I live in the very middle of town. Coyotes have been spotted one house over from me.

I know what you mean about scary. Possums and raccoons are as not as docile as they seem in pictures and from a distance. I have had them growl at me from four feet away.

Thanks for the heads up on Seattle. Thanks.

  3. Well done on the ribbons!
I've never won a thing (maybe because I never enter competitions)

    1. kylie,
Thanks. You mostly have to enter things to win. However, I did win something and had presenters, a ribbon and photographer standing before me while I had not a clue! I was in shock because I did not know there was a contest and prize!

  4. Congratulations on the ribbons and the prize money. If it's like our fair, you will be able to spend it all in one place.

  5. Congrats on the ribbons - fair are fun.

Something is digging a ridiculous amount of holes in our yard and I suspect skunks or raccoons. Glad I don't have chickens now; that is a constant state of vigilance. As my husband says, "Everything eats a chicken."

    1. Cherdo,
Thanks. I enjoy the fair, too.

Look for the scat. I know raccoon scat, but not possum scat. Your husband is so correct, and chickens are so defenseless. 000000

  6. We have possums and raccoons around us but we also have a large dog and she keeps them out of the yard most of the time

    Congratulations on the ribbons!

  7. Congratulations on the wins. It is fun to enter at the fair and feels really good to have our peers acknowledge the quality of the things we do.

I have coons that come up on my porch (try to discourage that), possums are in the area, had a skunk walk across the property one year and have seen several deer just down the street. I understand there is a fox colony down on the beach (they go after the eggs the birds lay) and there have been reports of a bobcat not too far from me. I also live within the city limits of a town of about 2,500.

    1. seyrey,
You are so right. Winning is fun.

I hear that all these critters except the deer are abundant even in NYC. It's too bad about the bird eggs.

  8. Yay for you!!! I hope you got some pics of what you created to win and will share that when you can.

As for my blog, not sure what is up. I'm trying to fix it, it's nothing I changed, it's apparently a blogger problem and only affects some blogs. Ugh. the kind of problem it will take forever to figure out. I might try the pop up comments for a bit. But keep trying and even if you can't just use the anonymous and put your name/user name and I'll know it's your.

As for opossums, none that we know of at the farm, when "Ma" lived there she never saw them. And in all the years only one raccoon so I'm not sure why, kind of weird. Here in town, we have had both, the opossum share the outside kitty's food on occasion. And she just sat there and casually watched it, ha.

    1. 1st Man,
Thanks. I will post pictures when I get the items back in a week.

I cannot post under any circumstances or under any name. That is why I hit reply and reply to someone else.

    2. 1st Man,
Probably there are enough dogs around to keep them from the area. Ha! Some cats fight for their food; others share.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
