Fair Entry

Right now, I am working on my one and only fair entry. I have dehydrated sliced okra and tomatoes and onions are currently in the dehydrator. There is no way I would eat okra. However, the result in a pint jar will be pretty.

Two pounds of frozen, sliced okra, five Roma tomatoes, and one Vidalia onion just fit into a pint jar. When rehydrated, there should be five or six servings.

Maybe I will enter dehydrated bananas. If I can have two dehydrated entries, I will use the bananas.

I should have crocheted something. One year, I built a birdhouse and won second place.

Your turn
Are you entering anything in the fair in your area? What have you entered in the past? Have you ever eaten okra, tomatoes, and onions together?

  1. Yes to the okra, tomatoes and onions question. I like it, but then I like all of the components individually.

When I was in the 4th grade I won a ribbon for penmanship at the state fair. My 4th grade teacher entered my work. I am unsure how impressive it is to have a blue ribbon for 4th grade handwriting, though that blue ribbon hung on my bed post for years.

  2. Anne,
I don't like okra in any form. But. I go for the colors when I enter dehydrated food.

I am impressed by any ribbon a person wins! Thanks for that story.

  3. Linda:

I have entered items in the fair for the last three years or so. Each year taking some ribbons. This year I won "County Canning Queen" which was exciting. I also entered my banana bread which took either a first or a second and beat one of my friends. Already working on my entries for next year's fair - can't get canning queen for three more years (which is fine - once is probably adequate) but I hope to encourage others to enter. This next year I may just concentrate on things like condiments and juices - we'll see.

    Good luck on your entries.

  4. seyrey,
What was involved in winning the "County Canning Queen"? Congratulations! I need to start on next years' entries. I meant to make crocheted edging for a tablecloth.

  5. Linda you are the only southern girl I know who doesn't eat okra! I have a recipe for Indian Okra that uses a combination of those ingredients. It is easy, fragrant and spicy.

    1. Janet,
This Southern girl had a severe allergic reaction just from cutting it up. I imagine this is one of those things I did not like and am allergic to!

  6. Linda Is there a particular photo program that you like? I am using Picasa 3, It is pretty easy and best of all it is a free program.

    1. Janet,
I like my Kodak program. If I remember correctly, when I used Picasa, I lost exclusive rights to my photos. Picasa owned them and shared them.

  7. You have me thinking that I need to pull out my dehydrator! But I guess I would need something to dehydrate first though.

    1. Sonya Ann,
My dehydrator is out all the time, so I do find something to dehydrate. If I had to move this monster in and out, I would never dehydrate anything. Of course, It eats up lots of counter space.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
