It Pays Not to Listen! + Grocery Ads

Dilation for eye exam

Surgery date is set. And, I am nervous. At least this time the dilation did not leave me with a headache for a week.

Every morsel of information on cataract surgery from people I know who have undergone the surgery adds to my feeling of security. Some of it was stressful--do not drive for a week. Don't eat or drink after midnight--Remember, I have hypoglycemia that is not fully controlled.

Finally, yesterday, I saw the doctor who will perform the surgery. He has done 35,000 cataract surgeries. That's all he ever does. However, his competence is little consolation when I will have my eye cut and something foreign inserted. Aaack,  I am not taking this well. I can drive the following day. I only have to stop eating at 6 am before surgery. Whew! Well, I doubt I will get up at 5 am just to eat. But, if I did that, I could go back to bed. Now, that is a thought.

Exbf asked at work for that day off. That still leaves me in a bind. I am supposed to have someone with me for 24 hours. Nope, he will buy our dinner and head home. Every time I have been told to have someone with me for 24 hours, I never have. Plus, I must see my regular eye doctor the day after surgery, and he will release me to drive. The office is only two miles from my house, so I am tempted to drive myself.

September 23, 2014 is the day. Nothing I have been told has proven to be true with this doctor.

NOT August 23rd!

Local Grocery Ads

Six local grocery ads

There were six ads in the mailbox today. I went through the ads, ready to mark what I wanted to buy this week. There were really good deals, but not on things I buy.

There was one thing I will get against my better judgment. TREET  I had never tasted Spam until last year. As a child, we ate Treet because my parents preferred it. We rarely ever had it, so it was really good with pan-fried potatoes. You know the kind? Right? They are as greasy as French fries. I slice and fry Treet. It is $1/can. I really don't know the regular price, so I will have to investigate prices. Maybe I will only buy one can just for old time's sake.

The only thing I will buy this week is fresh vegetables. Actually, I will buy just a bag of salad greens. Tuesday, I bought milk. Of course, I still need to look at the Publix and Kroger ads.

Your turn
Have you had cataract surgery? Any problems? Anything I need to know?  Don't hold back about problems. I need to know! Do you ever have weeks when the ads are overloaded with sales and then other weeks when there is not a lot to buy that you want AND on sale?

  1. My mother had cataract surgery. My mother made an art form out of complaining, whinging and whining. Nothing was EVER good enough. And she couldn't find a bad thing to say about her eye surgery. Which says volumes.
    Good luck.
She didn't like the surgeon's shirt though. Or the receptionist's finger nails.

    1. EC,
My surgeon had on a flag blue scrub (pants and shirt) and an orange tee shirt when he examined me. It was so distracting because he had a suit jacket on over it...lol. I would never mention it. Finally, I decided he was an Auburn fan. Then, I noticed everyone had on flag blue scrubs.

Fingernails? As long as she does not touch me during surgery if they were dirty.

Well, if your mother made it, I suppose I will. Thanks.

  2. Don't worry Linda. Mom also had cataract surgeries on both eyes two weeks apart. She couldn't believe how fast and easy they were. She didn't feel a thing. She was very scared and her doctor thought she was crazy since she had her both knees replaced all at once four year ago which took 5 hours of surgery and month of recovery time.
It would be nice to have someone with you for 24 hours but I don't think it is a must. Just make sure you use your drops meticulously on time. Good Luck!

    1. T'Pol,
I understand your mother. I would rather have problems with knee surgery than eye surgery.

They say that having someone with you for 24 hours is a must. Exbf with be at surgery, but he is to respond with "Thelma Rhodes" as the person with me. That is "Rhodes" as in Rhode Island Red.

I have a chart to mark when I use the drops. I don't even have to remember this way. Thanks.

  4. I tried to leave a comment but it disappeared. TREET? I don't know what that is, but I love Spam. And nowhere have I seen Spam for just $1?! If I did, I would LOAD UP. I will look Treet up when I finish here. Cataract surgery sounds scary... but everyone I know who has had it has not had one complication. They were fine within a day. Just do not rub at your eyes!!

    1. Furry Bottoms,
Treet is supposed to be the poor man's Spam. I suppose we had it once a month or less when I was growing up. But, it was always fried.

I rub my eyes ALL the time, even in my sleep. I ripped out stitches above my eye one night, stitches just above the lid! My friend had a fungal infection and had to be rushed to surgery 50 miles away and had surgery at 2:30 am.

    2. If you tell them about your habit of rubbing your eyes, they will give you something to close that eye during the night so that you can't rub your eye. It was a plastic cover type thing that she used with some sticky bandage.

    3. T'Pol,
I am going to write it down and give it to them. I imagine I would be determined enough to peel it off. I really want someone to sit beside me and watch me sleep so I will be good. I sleep the sleep of the dead, but can manage to do things, like scratch my arm bloody after a mosquito bite. I really need to wear something over my eye in the day to keep me from rubbing, too. Thanks.

  5. Cataract surgery sounds scary but I have known many people that have had eye surgery, they are all worried and understandable but after its done they are so thankful.

    1. Sonya Ann,
I am more frightened that when I had half thyroid out or had arthroscopic knee surgery. I will be thankful to see. Thanks.

  6. Both implants caused me many BIG problems; made me able to see the dirt better. Haha. Thrilled with ability to no longer need eye glasses. It is wonderful. Bet you are going to be mighty happy too. Just follow your doctor's orders and you will be fine.

    1. Sissy,
I never thought about seeing all the dirt...lol. I want to wear glasses. I will be so anal about following orders, I promise. Thanks.

  7. My (former) mother-in-law met her boyfriend/new husband at the doctor's office when they both had cataract surgery. I don't know of any complaints about the surgery, and she loves having such a nice new companion. She didn't think she would get involved with anyone so late in her life. My conclusion is that cataract surgery can lead to better eyesight and bring you new love.

    Love,
    Janie

    1. Janie,
That's so sweet and gives me hope. There was a guy with his wife and another 100 year old guy with his daughter...sigh. That is the last time I will be at the office, I think. But, I will keep that in mind and maybe it will distract me from the impending surgery.

Thanks. I am nervous even though the time is a month away.

    2. A month away? Then you must have meant SEPTEMBER 23 instead of August 23!

I know you will do just fine. I have never heard a bad report about that type of surgery!

  9. Best of luck, Linda! I hate to sound like a broken record but MY mother also had cataract surgery and she thought everything was so much easier than expected. She said "it was like falling off of a log."

I hope you do fine, and heal quickly! You get a spot on the prayer list, girl, bless your heart.

Okay, hoping the annoyances have gone away.
